When absolute power creates politicians from Dark Ages – Stephen Then |

I KNOW of certain government politicians who have purposely victimised handicapped people for being critical of certain issues and policies. I have also heard about certain political representatives who purposely prevented electricity and water connections to rural folk who supported parties not aligned to the ruling government.
Such vengeful and twisted politicians can be found not just in Sarawak but also in the rest of the country. I worked in the Klang Valley, Terengganu, and Kelantan for six years since I first started as a reporter, and I too have encountered such vengeful politicians in those states.
In my last 25 years as a reporter in Sarawak, I have seen my fair share of these types of politicians. I would have thought that such a barbaric form of political administration belonged to the Dark Ages.
Sadly, we keep on hearing of such oppression, even today.
Last week, Assistant State Minister Datuk Francis Harden allegedly insinuated that community leaders who support the opposition should not be paid by the ruling state government.
Opposition parties Parti Bansa Dayak Sarawak Baru (PBDSB) and Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) subsequently slammed Harden for threatening those community leaders alleged to have supported opposition parties during last month’s 12th state election.
PSB Miri division chief Bruce Chai said if the ruling Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government is launching a post-election vendetta, it is a deplorable act.

PKR or Pakatan logo? Don’t play checkers in a chess game – William Leong |

PKR has been criticised for breaking rank in using its own logo rather than the Pakatan Harapan (PH) logo in the forthcoming Johor election. Speaking as an ordinary PKR member, I am of the opinion that it is unfair to label the party’s use of its own logo as breaking away from PH or a sign of disunity. There are valid reasons for PKR to choose its own logo over the PH logo.
First, uniformity of appearance cannot be more important than allowing a party to give its best shot at winning the election.
In checkers, the pieces move in a uniformed pace and direction. Winning is achieved by coordinating and supporting the uniformed movement. In chess, the pieces do not move in a uniformed manner or direction. Winning is achieved by giving the pieces their full range of the board in accordance with their specific and unique movements.

MUAR, Jan 29 — The Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (MUDA) decision to contest in the upcoming Johor State Election should not be underestimated and must be viewed as a testing ground in determining the wishes of young voters.
The Ketereh Umno Division chief Tan Sri Annuar Musa said as a democratic nation, everyone, who has legally registered including MUDA should be given the opportunity to contest to gauge their capability.
Annuar, who is also Communications and Multimedia Minister, said Umno would also provide more opportunities for young candidates to work together with leaders with extensive experience in the political landscape, citing the success it created in the previous state election as an example.

JOHOR BAHRU: Umno vice-president Khaled Nordin has mocked PAS as a serial divorcer, for its many failed relationships with other political parties.
Khaled, a former Johor menteri besar, said the Islamic party had entered into numerous “political marriages” with other parties before ending their relationships, something which Umno wanted to avoid.
“In Melaka, they chose to be with (the Bersatu-led) Perikatan Nasional. In Sarawak, they fielded their own candidate,” he told FMT.
Yesterday, PAS reaffirmed its pact with Bersatu for the Johor state elections.

PETALING JAYA: A business group has slammed the government for raising electricity rates for commercial and industrial users, saying that businessmen may be forced to pass on some of the increase in operational costs to consumers just like Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) is doing.
It said as it is, small and medium enterprises (SMEs) were already struggling after being hit by the Covid-19 pandemic, and the 11-18.4% hike in electricity rates from next month will surely hamper their recovery.

Hewlett Packard wins billion-dollar fraud case in UK |

LONDON – US tech giant Hewlett Packard (HP) won its multibillion-dollar fraud case yesterday over its 2011 purchase of British software company Autonomy.
A year after the deal, HP accused Autonomy of fudging its accounts, claiming it had inflated its value and caused huge losses for the US company when the true situation emerged after the US$11.1-billion (RM46.5-billion) sale.
HP sued two executives, Mike Lynch, Autonomy’s British founder, and former chief financial officer Sushovan Hussain, for around US$5 billion.
In a summary of his decision in what is believed to be Britain’s biggest-ever civil fraud trial, judge Robert Hildyard said HP and the other claimants had “substantially won”.
Hildyard said the damages to be paid will be determined at a later date.
HP claimed the two men had “artificially inflated Autonomy’s reported revenues, revenue growth and gross margins... over a sustained period of time.”
The company announced an US$8.8-billion write-down of the firm’s value just over a year after the sale.
