Focus on science, coding skills to future proof nation, says ex-minister

PETALING JAYA: The education ministry must pay attention to subjects that will equip youths with skills for the future workplace rather than push for religious studies, a former minister said today.

Former international trade and industry minister Darell Leiking added that while religious studies was certainly needed, it should be taught at home, religious schools or places of worship.

He called on schools to instead focus on subjects such as science, finance and coding skills, among others, saying that such skills were needed to “future proof” the country.

“The schools of today must prepare for the future and focus on science, finance, humanities, ethics alongside coding skills, programming and the Internet of Everything (IoE),” Leiking said in a Facebook post.

IoE – which is described as the intelligent connection of people, process, data and things – is an expansion of the Internet of Things or IoT.

PAS, Bersatu reaffirm pact for Johor polls
Posted by: superadmin - 01-29-2022, 05:06 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: abdul-hadi-awang-muhyiddin-yassin-fmt-290122-1.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: PAS and Bersatu today announced that they will contest the Johor polls under the Perikatan Nasional (PN) banner.

The two main PN component parties issued a pledge announcing their renewed vow to work together.

The move also comes amid strained ties between PAS and Umno.

The one-page pledge was shared by PN chairman Muhyiddin Yassin’s aide with the press.

At a press conference later, Muhyiddin said the accord struck between PAS and Bersatu was historic as it determined the political direction both parties would be taking.

He said PN will use the same strategy as it did in Melaka in fielding candidates for the upcoming Johor polls.

Xi's view on civilization sheds light on shared future
Posted by: superadmin - 01-29-2022, 02:47 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

BEIJING, Jan. 28 (Xinhua) -- With one week to go, athletes from around the world will gather at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics under the motto "Together for a Shared Future."

As the Beijing 2022 organizers explained, "Together" depicts how mankind stays strong when facing adversity and points out the solution to overcome those difficulties and create a better future, while "for a Shared Future" embodies a vision for a better life and conveys hope and confidence.

The motto echoes the concept of building a community with a shared future for mankind.

"Instead of riding separately in some 190 small boats, countries around the world should stay together in one giant ship and sail toward a brighter future, and this is why we came up with 'Together for a Shared Future' as the official motto for Beijing 2022," Chinese President Xi Jinping said when meeting International Olympic Committee chief Thomas Bach in Beijing on Tuesday.

China will make new and greater contributions to the Olympic Movement and promote the building of a community with a shared future for mankind, Xi said.

As athletes with various cultural backgrounds come to Beijing for competition and exchanges in ice and snow sports, they also participate in the event to show solidarity.

Mankind is in an era of major development as well as profound transformation and change, and is also in an era of numerous challenges and increasing risks. Unity, cooperation, and dialogue clamor in the face of global challenges, particularly COVID-19 claiming millions of lives across the globe.

Official figures show China has provided more than 2 billion doses of COVID vaccines to over 120 countries and international organizations as of Dec. 26, 2021, becoming the biggest provider of outbound vaccines among all nations.

Nobel laureate Paul Krugman says crypto has ‘disturbing’ parallels with subprime mortgage meltdown

  • There are disturbing echoes of the subprime crash” in the cryptocurrency market, Nobel Prize-winning economist Paul Krugman says.
  • Krugman argues crypto investors are being sold speculative financial products without truly understanding the risks involved.
  • Bitcoin and other digital currencies have dropped sharply in recent weeks.

Nobel Prize-winning economist Paul Krugman has given an ominous warning about the volatile cryptocurrency market, comparing it to the subprime mortgage crisis of the late 2000s.

In an opinion piece for The New York Times on Thursday, Krugman said he’s “seeing uncomfortable parallels” between crypto and the U.S. subprime crash, which brought the whole housing market to its knees and triggered the 2007-2008 global financial crisis.

“There are disturbing echoes of the subprime crash 15 years ago,” Krugman says in the piece.

Najib masking his govt's RM1t debt as Harapan’s doing
Posted by: superadmin - 01-29-2022, 02:04 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

MP SPEAKS | Former prime minister Najib Razak is at it again (and again). He waxes lyrical about his financial administration while condemning the Pakatan Harapan administration with lies and half-truths.

In the latest, published in Free Malaysia Today, he sang praises of how well his economy was doing with only debts of RM687 billion compared to a massive increase to RM1 trillion under the Harapan government.

“Congratulations Pakatan Harapan, congratulations Guan Eng, congratulations Abahkau, and congratulations Atok,” he jabbed.

In this case, Najib is either the worst possible Finance Minister Malaysia has ever had because he doesn’t know how to count, or more likely, he believes that the Malaysian voters are so stupid that they will believe his brazen and blatant lies and twisted truths.

PKR’s logo move a risky gambit in Johor polls, say analysts
Posted by: superadmin - 01-29-2022, 11:44 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: PKR’s recent mauling in the Melaka and Sarawak state elections could be the reason for the party deciding to use its symbol instead of the Pakatan Harapan logo in the upcoming Johor polls, but it’s a strategy that analysts say may go wrong.

Azmi Hassan, a senior fellow at the Nusantara Academy for Strategic Research, said it was odd that the lead party in the coalition opted to use its own symbol while the other two use the coalition logo.

“If PKR says that it can attract more people especially the Malay voters by doing this, I don’t think the strategy is going to work. The party has actually put itself in a disadvantageous position by doing this.

“The leaders must understand that it was more than the logo that led to poor performance by PH parties in the Melaka and Sarawak state elections,” he told FMT.

Disunity among Opposition now normal, should resolve itself by GE15, say analysts
Posted by: superadmin - 01-29-2022, 11:24 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 29 — The current disunity among the Opposition was not unusual and should resolve itself in time for the 15th general election, two political analysts said.

Political analysts Prof Kartini Aboo Talib @ Khalid and Prof Sivamurugan Pandian said the open disagreements among the allies likely suggested that a general election was near.

Despite the apparent disunity, they said political rivals should not discount the Opposition parties.

“Opposition seemed to be disunited during both the Sarawak and Melaka elections. However, they always put aside the differences during the general election,” Sivamurugan from Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) said.

“Although Parti Warisan (Warisan) has been showing its interest to lead and become a strong viable alternative, it depends on who they will work with during polls. The other Opposition parties might also have their plans during the general election and they would not be easy to defeat if the people still want them as a strong alternative to avoid a big mandate,” he told Malay Mail.

In November last year, Barisan Nasional (BN) won the Melaka state election with a supermajority and comfortably formed the state government without needing any other support including from its estranged allies in Perikatan Nasional (PN).

To use, or not to use Pakatan’s logo for Johor polls
Posted by: superadmin - 01-29-2022, 10:50 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: 01122021PakatanHarapan-Rebrand-twitter.jpg]

KUALA LUMPUR – There are mixed reactions among Pakatan Harapan (PH) leaders over which logo to use in the upcoming Johor election and this sentiment is shared by members in the state.

Former Perling assemblyman Cheo Yee How expressed hope that he will be able to contest the seat he won in 2018, but he will await the decision concerning candidacies from his party, DAP.

In the meantime, if he does end up contesting for the upcoming state polls, he would most likely end up contesting using the PH logo, while his colleagues in PKR contesting in other areas of Johor would use their own party logo.

When asked about his views concerning the coalition’s decisions on logos, Cheo hoped all component parties could contest under one single logo.

Stop misleading us on corruption perception score, says Santiago
Posted by: superadmin - 01-29-2022, 10:40 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: wan-junaidi-charles-santiago-collage-290122-1.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: Law minister Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar should not mislead the public on why Malaysia’s corruption perceptions index (CPI) has dropped, says an opposition MP.

Klang MP Charles Santiago said Wan Junaidi had “got it wrong” and that he needed to be more nuanced when addressing the increasing corruption in the country.

“In actual fact, if the government is investigating more corruption cases, the score will go up. Only when you’re trying to close those cases will (the index) begin to drop,” he told FMT.

Yesterday, Wan Junaidi said the decline in Malaysia’s CPI was due to wide publicity in the fight against corruption and the number of cases in court.

He said the recent crackdown on cases by enforcement agencies such as the police and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) had led to an increase in the perception that corruption was rampant in the country.
