KUALA LUMPUR – The Dewan Rakyat is set to convene for a special sitting next month specifically to deliberate on the proposed anti-party hopping bill, confirming rumours that it will be postponed beyond the current sitting.
Newly appointed DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke Siew Fook said this was confirmed by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob in a meeting held with Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) top leaders in Parliament today.
Apart from Loke, the others present were Amanah president Mohamad Sabu and PKR secretary-general Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, the latter representing party president and opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
“The prime minister has given his commitment that the bill will be tabled and debated in the Dewan Rakyat through a special sitting during the coming month of Ramadan,” he said in a Facebook post.

Can the Russian invasion of Ukraine be avoided in the first place? Definitely, but the conflict was never about Ukraine to begin with. Russia was engaged in a bold brinkmanship game with the United States and NATO over their respective sphere of influence. And Ukrainian President Zelensky was foolish enough to believe that Russian Vladimir Putin would not dare invade Ukraine.
Joe Biden too thought Putin was bluffing, hence the U.S. president made the biggest blunder of his life when the U.S. and Ukraine signed a “Charter on Strategic Partnership” on Nov 10 last year. It was essentially Washington’s support for Kyiv’s right to pursue membership in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) – if Ukraine met the alliance’s criteria.
The November agreement could be hatched to test Russia with no serious intention to accept Ukraine into NATO. If it was a serious offer, the NATO could quickly accept Ukraine before the invasion. The Western powers have months to do that while Putin was mobilizing his army. NATO’s Article 5 says that an attack on one member of NATO is an attack on all of its members.

Who will become Malaysia’s next prime minister after the 15th General Election, which does not need to be held till middle of 2023, but is being vigorously pushed by the top leadership of the United Malays National Organization (UMNO)? The political party has just concluded its general assembly, but the competition for the top post has just begun, and Prime Minister Ismail Sabri is in trouble.
As the Court Cluster, in reference to several UMNO leaders facing graft charges in court, including former Prime Minister Najib Razak and UMNO president Zahid Hamidi, used the UMNO assembly to pressure the head of Minister Cluster (PM Ismail) to dissolve the Parliament for a snap election, the lame duck prime minister appears ready to surrender.
The first sign the premier, who is one of three UMNO vice presidents, has been cowed into submission was the sudden U-turn to allow Employees Provident Fund (EPF) contributors to make yet another special withdrawal. Najib and Zahid had previously demanded that the government approved the withdrawal – a populist idea to hoodwink gullible supporters, especially the Malays.

Ukraine war reshaping global geopolitical and economic outlook, says S&P Global Market
KUALA LUMPUR (March 23): The Russian invasion of Ukraine has fundamentally changed the geopolitical landscape—with economic consequences, said S&P Global Market Intelligence.
In a statement on Tuesday (March 22), the firm said its forecast of global real GDP growth in 2022 has been marked down to 3.3% from 4.1% in February.
S&P Global Market Intelligence executive director, global macroeconomics Sara Johnson said Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has triggered a global commodities shock that will further dislocate global supply chains, drive up prices, and slow economic growth—especially in Europe.

PETALING JAYA: PKR sacked some 11,000 members aligned to its former deputy president Azmin Ali following the Sheraton Move which saw the collapse of the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government two years ago.
Secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said PKR’s disciplinary board was forced to work “harder” to rid the party of individuals who had been working hand-in-glove with “traitors”.

PETALING JAYA: Najib Razak has urged the government to protect Sapura Energy Bhd from bankruptcy by providing loans or instructing Petronas or Khazanah Nasional to take over ownership from Permodalan Nasional Bhd (PNB).
The former prime minister was critical of PNB for failing to take action during the tenure of the previous Perikatan Nasional administration on Sapura’s problems and for stopping cash flow assistance.

Despite birth of new parties, pundits remain skeptical that Malaysia will move past race and religion-based politics by GE15
KUALA LUMPUR, March 22 — Parti Warisan Sabah and Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (Muda) are among the newer parties that have vowed to move on beyond ethno-religious issues, but political analysts were sceptical that the playing field will change much.
Speaking to Malay Mail, the analysts polled said the issues of race and religion will likely remain centre stage in the run up to the 15th general election (GE15) and may even stay in Malaysian politics beyond then.
“If you trace back since the 1960s, race and religion have always been the issue,” said senior fellow with the National Professors Council, Jeniri Amir.
He pointed to legacy political parties that were formed to represent a specific ethnic group or dominated by one, such as Barisan Nasional components: Malay nationalist party Umno, ethnic Chinese-majority MCA and ethnic Indian-majority MIC.

PETALING JAYA: After a disastrous outing at the Johor elections, Pakatan Harapan allies Amanah and DAP have a choice of forming a new relationship or sticking by their old partner PKR.
Political analyst Azmi Hassan says Amanah and DAP should join forces with Muda, the new youth-based party formed by Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman.
However, fellow analyst Ahmad Fauzi Abdul Hamid says the pair should not form alliances with any new party but should carry on with their old partner.
Azmi, a senior fellow with Akademi Nusantara, said Muda had potential, going by the party’s showing in the Johor election. The party won one seat and garnered 48,072 votes or 3.46% of all ballots cast.

PETALING JAYA: Umno vice-president Khaled Nordin has urged the government to no longer delay the tabling of an anti-hopping bill.
Calling the bill a “progressive move”, Khaled said the bill was part of Umno’s commitment to eradicate all forms of mandate abuse by elected representatives.
The bill was also an important part of political reforms supported by both Umno and the opposition.
“If the tabling of the bill is delayed for too long, it will raise doubts about Umno’s commitment in championing political and institutional reforms as promised. Therefore, it should not be delayed any longer and must be given priority by the government,” he said in a statement today.

‘Something wrong with the EC’ |

KUALA LUMPUR – The Election Commission (EC) is experiencing a trust deficit that needs to be addressed immediately.
This is the reaction of several politicians to Perak ruler Sultan Nazrin Shah’s remarks yesterday on enhancing the effectiveness and trustworthiness of the EC, with one of them simply saying that there’s “something wrong” with the institution.
The sultan had asked the Conference of Rulers and Yang Di-Pertuan Agong to pay special attention to the selection of EC members and ensure that they command the public trust.
The deputy Agong made the proposal during a book launch yesterday as he noted that the commission’s members cannot simply be dismissed, barring grounds to do so, similar to the position of a Federal Court judge.
