SHAH ALAM: DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang announced that he was quitting politics for good at the party’s national congress held here today.
Lim, 81, said he is withdrawing from the race for a seat in the central executive committee (CEC) at today’s election.
Lim had been in the CEC since 1966 when he began as a national organising secretary, and subsequently went on to hold the powerful secretary-general’s post for 30 years from 1969.
“I announce my retirement from politics and I also withdraw from contesting (for a place) in the CEC,” he said. “I will also not compete in any general or state elections in the future.”

Chinese Vice FM highlights root cause of Ukraine crisis, urges Asia-Pacific to cherish peace
The root cause of the current Ukraine crisis lies in the Cold War mentality and power politics, and there are some lessons that should be learned from it, including that one should not seek absolute unilateral security and group confrontation, globalization should not be "weaponized" and small countries should not be used as pawns, Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Le Yucheng said at a forum on Saturday, less than one day after the video meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Joe Biden on Friday evening.
Le made the remarks at the 4th International Forum on Security and Strategy held by Tsinghua University's Center for International Security and Strategy. During the forum, Le said that the US should implement the positive statements made by US President Joe Biden following the latest virtual meeting between the two heads of state.
Since NATO had promised that it would move "not one inch eastward", it should not renege on its word while keep pushing its boundary eastward by up to thousands of kilometers, Le said, noting that such pursuit of absolute security actually leads to absolute insecurity. Pushing a major country, especially a nuclear power, to the corner would entail repercussions too dreadful to contemplate.

Personality politics must go, says Rafizi in comeback speech |

GEORGE TOWN: Personality politics can no longer swing votes at the polls as the electorate has become more discerning, says former Pandan MP Rafizi Ramli.
He gave an example where following Pakatan Harapan’s massive losses over a few elections, there have been calls to have certain leaders to be brought in to recreate a winning streak similar to the election “tsunami” that swept PH to power in 2018.
“Some people in PH think that without Dr Mahathir Mohamad, we will not win. This shows they are so separated from reality on the ground and with the electorate.
“There are some in PH whose view is that politics is about creating a tsunami, where they say people would follow (a personality) just because one person is there. I disagree with this because people are not stupid.

Hadi, Umno no longer needs PAS |

BobbyO: With BN’s wins in last November’s Malacca election and the recently concluded Johor election, Umno does not need a partner.
They need parties that will toe the line and take instructions, like MCA and MIC. They do not need PAS, which wants to be an equal partner.
So Kuala Nerus MP Mohd Khairuddin Aman Razali, you should be happy that PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang is paying for his sins like Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Muhyiddin Yassin. In no time, PAS will be reduced to be a kampung (village) party.
You were right in advising PAS to stay with Umno but Hadi saw the positions and perks that Muhyiddin could offer. Being blinded by it, he did not think of a long-term strategy.
So no amount of weeping and beating of the chest is going to move Umno now. They are on a winning streak and have regained their confidence.
BusinessFirst: @BobbyO, I agree with you. Umno doesn’t need PAS.
PAS will be a burden for BN. The non-Malay votes have shifted a little back to BN.
Having PAS with BN will not just stop the shift, it will reverse it and worse, encourage the voters who did not want to vote to do so because they fear what PAS’ influence would be in a future BN government.
The best thing for Pakatan Harapan is if PAS is a BN ally.

KUALA LUMPUR – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob has given his commitment to dissolve Parliament as soon as the party is confident of securing victory at the federal level.
In a fiery speech at the Umno general assembly, the party vice-president also called on all leaders and members to close ranks ahead of the much-anticipated polls to ensure a win.
Ismail Sabri said he took note of the demands from party delegates urging for an early election and said the matter will be deliberated soon by the top five leaders.
These leaders include president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan and vice-presidents Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid, Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin and Ismail Sabri himself.
“All of us here want Barisan Nasional (BN) to be the dominant party in the country once again,” he said during his winding up speech at the annual meeting today.
“If we are confident of victory, we will not wait even a second to dissolve Parliament to make way for the 15th general election.” – The Vibes, March 19, 2022

Ditch Hadi and Sanusi, then we can ‘muafakat’, Umno tells PAS |

KUALA LUMPUR – Umno should only consider rekindling its political alliance with PAS if the Islamist party is willing to turn its back on president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang, a party division chief proposed today.
Speaking at the Umno general assembly, Pasir Puteh Umno chief Datuk Zawawi Othman reasoned that possible future cooperations between the two can only happen once leaders who have “bad mouthed” Umno are out of the picture.
Other names mentioned by the Kelantan Umno information chief include Nik Omar Nik Abdul Aziz – son of former PAS leader Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat – and Kedah PAS deputy commissioner Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor.
“If PAS were to reject these leaders, then we (Umno) can accept the party and hold proper discussions but as long as these individuals are around, then we should stick to ourselves and let them go about their business,” said Zawawi.
Referencing Hadi’s comment made on January 27 about Umno being like a “duck with broken legs”, Zawawi expressed his disappointment over such remarks especially since both parties had signed the Muafakat Nasional (MN) charter on September 14, 2019.

DAP to elect new leaders, including sec-gen, ahead of GE15 |

KUALA LUMPUR – After nine years at the helm of DAP, Lim Guan Eng will make way for a new secretary-general at its 17th national congress tomorrow, which comes in the wake of the party’s underwhelming performances in the last three state elections.
Lim cannot be re-elected to the post because he has served the maximum three terms, but is still expected to wield a strong influence as he is likely to remain in the central executive committee (CEC).
A total of 4,149 delegates will attend the one-day national congress physically at the Ideal Convention Centre in Shah Alam and vote in the CEC, which will lead the party into the 15th general election (GE15). The CEC members will among themselves elect the party’s office-bearers.
