Vigorous Chinese democracy vs aging Western one: Global Times editorial
Posted by: superadmin - 11-13-2021, 08:15 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: 51667938-6977-43f6-951f-b5704d625241.jpeg]

"Whole-process people's democracy" has been officially written into the Communiqué of the Sixth Plenary Session of the 19th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China. At Friday's press conference on the sixth plenum, the concept has been further clarified, which has garnered extensive attention from home and abroad.

Democracy is one of the important results of human society's development. It is destined to form different gene combinations in different social environments and manifest itself in various forms, just like that of plants and flowers.

The US and the West have always regarded themselves as property owners and missionaries of democracy, as if they are issuing democratic licenses to the world, preaching to people of other countries about how to be democratic and judging who is democratic and who is not. But they are no longer able to carry on such moves.

  Melaka — the real challenge
Posted by: superadmin - 11-13-2021, 06:10 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

From Chandra Muzaffar

There is an unusual election happening in Melaka. It is an election without any of the conventional features of an election campaign.

There are no organised house-to-house visits; no small-group meetings; no large-scale public gatherings. Walkabouts are prohibited. Campaigning in public spaces is not allowed.

However, candidates can put across their messages online. They can use both the print and electronic media to campaign to their heart’s content.

WhatsApp and Twitter and other such channels, including the telephone, have all become popular means of communication.

The people have accepted restrictions imposed upon them because they are aware of the risks and dangers associated with the coronavirus pandemic. No one — and least of all the candidates — wants to see another surge in serious infections or contend with an alarming escalation in Covid-19 deaths.

So, everyone is prepared to put up with an election shorn of the central elements of a democratic contest.

Melaka election: a motley crew of strange bedfellows – Terence Fernandez
Posted by: superadmin - 11-13-2021, 08:32 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: 12112021-MLK-PERANG_BENDERA_-Alif_Omar-5.jpg]

ONE thing for certain in this Melaka election is that nothing is certain.

With muddled alliances that keep shifting as rapidly as Sg Melaka during a thunderstorm, the political chess games that are being played are only aiding in discouraging an already fatigued and disillusioned electorate from coming out to vote on November 20.

With campaigning kept to a minimum – in essence, non-existent – due to Covid-19 protocols, the usual sights and sounds of an election are all but missing.

Flags and posters are sparse, and candidates can only hop on motorcycles and the back of pick-ups and lorries with loudhailers selling their promise. They are not allowed to stop and speak to constituents.

The dilemma of candidates is whether to sell the same old “if I am elected, I will do this and that…” or gauge the temperament of the electorate for the bigger battle that lies ahead – the 15th general election (GE15).

Better ways than national service to build unity, says Chandra
Posted by: superadmin - 11-13-2021, 08:26 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Political scientist Chandra Muzaffar has suggested an approach to national unity that is more comprehensive than one proposed recently in the Dewan Rakyat.

Referring to Sungai Petani MP Johari Abdul’s call for a mandatory two-year national service programme for school leavers, Chandra told FMT he believed such a course would not have a lasting effect on the trainees’ appreciation of a multiracial society.

They would normally “go back to their old selves” when pursuing their careers, he said.

“It’ll be just like studying in school for the purpose of passing exams. You remember things for the exam and after that you forget.”

PAS talks like it’s moderate but history shows otherwise, says Umno VP
Posted by: superadmin - 11-13-2021, 08:21 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: PAS may speak and present itself as “more moderate than the moderate” but the party’s track record clearly shows that it is anything but moderate, an Umno vice-president said.

Khaled Nordin said PAS may appear moderate nowadays but that was not because of its ideology or political approach.

“It’s because PAS is aware that it has to be moderate to be invited to be part of the government,” he said in a statement.

He was responding to reports that quoted PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang, who touted Perikatan Nasional (PN) as a coalition of non-extremists and the antidote to Barisan Nasional’s (BN) weaknesses, which had begun to show after it was in power for decades.

Khaled said BN had always stood firm in supporting Malaysia’s diversity, which is why it had never joined other coalitions in an attempt to look moderate.

Olympic gold medalist Suni Lee says she was pepper-sprayed in a racist attack
Posted by: superadmin - 11-12-2021, 06:33 PM - Forum: Stop Racism and Religious Bigotry - No Replies

[Image: 210729100544-26-sunisa-lee-olympics-2020...ge-169.jpg]

(CNN)American gymnast Suni Lee, an Olympic gold medal winner and the first Hmong American to compete in the Olympics, said she was pepper-sprayed in a racist incident while in Los Angeles for her stint on "Dancing with the Stars."

Lee was waiting for a ride after a night out with a group of girlfriends who were all of Asian descent, she told PopSugar in an interview.

She said a car drove by and the people in it started shouting racist slurs like "ching chong," and telling the girls to "go back to where they came from," according to the article.

Then, one of the passengers sprayed her arm with pepper spray before the car took off, Lee said.

Lee confirmed to CNN that the incident happened in October.

Muhyiddin to unveil PN manifesto for Melaka polls on Sunday
Posted by: superadmin - 11-12-2021, 02:41 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: muhyiddin-yassin-perikatan-nasional-fmt-111121-1.jpg]

PN Melaka election campaign coordinator Badrul Hisham Shaharin, also known as Che’gu Bard, said the manifesto would be launched in a hybrid manner by PN chairman Muhyiddin Yassin.

“It will contain, among others, pledges to fight corruption and create a stable state government,” he told Bernama.

Last Wednesday, Barisan Nasional (BN) launched its manifesto for the election with the theme “Stability for Prosperity”, which outlines five thrust areas and 103 initiatives.

On the same day, Pakatan Harapan (PH) also unveiled its manifesto, called “Action Plan for Progress with Hope”, containing three core areas – welfare, prosperity and stability – with six strategies and 32 initiatives.

Nov 20 is polling day, with early voting on Nov 16.

Alibaba, JD smash Singles Day record with $139 billion of sales
Posted by: superadmin - 11-12-2021, 02:13 PM - Forum: Business, Economy and Investment - No Replies

Alibaba, JD smash Singles Day record with $139 billion of sales and focus on ‘social responsibility’
  • Alibaba and JD.com racked up around $139 billion of sales across their platforms on China’s Singles Day shopping event, setting a new record.
  • The record sales come despite worries about the strength of the Chinese consumer and the impact of Beijing’s crackdown on technology companies.
  • Singles Day was a slightly more muted affair as Chinese technology companies continue to face scrutiny from regulators and President Xi Jinping pushes for so-called “common prosperity.”

GUANGZHOU, China — Chinese e-commerce giants Alibaba and JD.com set new sales records across their platforms on Singles Day, the largest shopping event in the world.
Shares of JD were up about 4.6% in afternoon trade in Hong Kong on Friday while Alibaba was down about 1.8%.

The record sales come despite worries about the strength of the Chinese consumer and the impact of Beijing’s crackdown on technology companies.

While Singles Day, also called Double 11, used to just be a 24-hour flash sale type of affair, it has transformed into a multi-day extravaganza, ending at midnight on Nov. 11. JD began sales in late October while Alibaba started at the beginning of November. This extended period has helped the companies continue to grow sales.

PAS hoping for coalition boost to its chances in Melaka polls
Posted by: superadmin - 11-12-2021, 11:31 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

AYER KEROH: PAS is hoping for a repeat of the last time it contested in Melaka as part of a coalition by winning at least one state seat.

The party made some inroads in Melaka in the 13th general election (GE13) in May 2013, winning its first-ever state seat after its candidate Dr Md Khalid Kassim won the Bukit Baru state seat, which is now known as Bukit Katil.

With PAS being in Pakatan Rakyat at the time, and having the support of PKR and DAP, Khalid beat Umno’s Karim Yaakob with a razor thin margin of less than 50 votes.

The Islamist party then decided to head into GE14 in May 2018 on its own, having left the then opposition coalition. However, it failed to defend its lone state seat and lost in all the 24 contests it took part in, with 10 of its candidates losing their deposit.

Khalid, too, contested in the parliamentary seat of Hang Tuah Jaya and lost his deposit after getting less than 10% of the total votes cast.

DNB facing uphill battle if telcos don’t bite, say critics
Posted by: superadmin - 11-12-2021, 11:24 AM - Forum: Business. Economy and Investment - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Critics are calling for a review of the decision to appoint Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB) to operate the 5G network following a report that all local telecommunications companies (telcos) are unwilling to sign up.

They say the disgruntlement among telco executives points to an uphill battle for the special purpose vehicle (SPV) which was set up by the government earlier this year to build and manage the network.

A Reuters report on Wednesday quoted several sources as saying none of the local mobile players have agreed to use Putrajaya’s 5G network, which was rolled out on Wednesday, citing transparency and pricing issues.

However, in another news report, DNB was reported to have said that it had not begun formal negotiations with providers as the necessary offer documents have yet to be finalised.

Speaking to FMT, PKR treasurer Lee Chean Chung said the stand-off between telcos and DNB would only delay the 5G rollout and jeopardise the country’s digitalisation ambitions and the mobile economy.
