US 'not sincere' in fixing ties with China

US 'not sincere' in fixing ties with China, as Washington still wants to copy 'bloc-to-bloc confrontation' in Asia-Pacific
[Image: a8bed494-b5ad-4e55-a968-af81a40983ad.jpeg]

Senior officials of the US and US-led military organization NATO are continuing to create hostile atmosphere against China among its allies and partners in the Asia-Pacific region, but at the same time, the US is seeking more engagement with China to better manage the so-called competition and the US even wishes to cooperate with China on some issues of great concern to the US, such as finance and the economy, climate change and the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Chinese analysts said the insincerity of the US side is very obvious, so China will also be cautious when it deals with the US. If the US refuses to correct its mistakes to fix the bilateral ties that have been unilaterally damaged by the US side since 2018, but  instead, keeps urging and using its allies to contain China, then Washington should not expect China to be cooperative in those fields.

According to the Associated Press, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin was in the Philippines on Wednesday for talks about deploying US forces and weapons in more Philippine military camps to ramp up deterrence against China's actions around the island of Taiwan and the South China Sea.

In an interview with the Financial Times earlier this month, Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos ruled out the reopening of the former US military bases of Subic Bay and Clark, saying it was against his country's constitution to allow foreign bases on its soil.

Perikatan’s ‘clean and stable’ tag under threat with Bersatu probe: academics
Posted by: superadmin - 02-02-2023, 11:26 AM - Forum: Politics - Replies (1)

[Image: 20221104_-_KUL_-_Perikatan_Nasional_anno...IMRAN1.jpg]

KUALA LUMPUR – The ongoing graft investigation into Bersatu and the freezing of its accounts have thrown a spanner in the works of Perikatan Nasional’s (PN) effort to showcase itself as a clean coalition, political analysts opined.

However, they said the true extent of the impact of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) probe on PN’s reputation will only be known once the anti-graft body completes its investigation.

Speaking to The Vibes’ Bahasa Malaysia sister-portal Getaran, Universiti Malaya academician Prof Awang Azman Awang Pawi said this latest development involving Bersatu has somewhat tarnished PN’s name, with the outfit priding itself as “Bersih dan Stabil” (BEST), or clean and stable.

“If the MACC probe proves wrongdoing, it will surely affect public support ahead of the six state elections to be held this year,” he said.

“How far PN and Bersatu will be affected will depend on the result of the investigation. If the probe leads to court, then it will influence their chances in the coming polls.”

AI voice tool 'misused' as deepfakes flood web forum

A British AI firm said it was rethinking its "safeguards" after its audio tool was used to clone celebrity voices and have them say racist and homophobic slurs.

Eleven Labs tweeted on Monday that it had been a "crazy weekend" and admitted to finding "an increasing number of voice cloning misuse cases" just days after it released a demo version of the tool.

The firm did not give details of the cases but the internet forum 4chan was flooded with deepfakes of celebrity voices using racist, sexist and homophobic slurs.

Many of the posts mentioned Eleven Labs, with some users claiming to have been banned by the firm and others providing links to the demo version of the tool.

Celebrities who came in for treatment on the forum, which is notorious for its offensive humour, included the stars of the Harry Potter films, and film directors Quentin Tarantino and George Lucas.

  MACC freezes Bersatu accounts
Posted by: superadmin - 02-01-2023, 06:00 PM - Forum: Stop Corruptions - Replies (6)

KUALA LUMPUR – Bersatu’s accounts have been frozen for investigations under money laundering laws, Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief Tan Sri Azam Baki said.

The anti-graft agency chief commissioner confirmed this to the media, saying the party’s accounts were being probed on suspicion of receiving illegal proceeds.

“Investigations are being done according to the MACC Act 2009 and the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act,” Azam said.

Azam’s confirmation did not mention the MACC’s ongoing investigations into the RM92.5 billion in economic stimulus funds that were allegedly misappropriated when Bersatu’s chief Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin was prime minister.

Muhyiddin also leads the Perikatan Nasional coalition, which ran the government from March 2020 to August 2021.

However, MACC already has investigation papers opened into the RM92.5 billion since December.

Complete US ban on Huawei a 'paranoid, last-ditch' move, set to bite US companies too

Complete US ban on Huawei a 'paranoid, last-ditch' move, set to bite US companies more
[Image: 64858df4-0e7a-4990-8489-8332dfb9802a.jpeg]

The Biden administration has reportedly halted approving licenses for US suppliers to export most items to Chinese tech company Huawei, and is weighing complete ban to cut Huawei off from all American suppliers, a sign that paranoid Washington has taken its relentless assault on the Chinese tech industry a step further and morphed it into a geopolitical battle for supremacy.

Targeting Huawei, a representative of China's rising high-tech industry, is not a new development, as the tech giant was added to the US trade blacklist four years ago. But what is ironic, according to observers, is that after years of "whack-a-mole" restrictions on a raft of Chinese tech firms, the Biden administration had to abruptly jump back to the original target.

The playbook not only lays bare that the US' export controls were futile in undercutting Chinese tech capabilities, but also mirrors Washington's desperation to "up the ante" ahead of the so-called second Summit for Democracy in March, during which it aims to rope in more allies to push for industrial decoupling with China.

The ban, when coming into effect, is estimated to have certain impacts on Huawei's smartphone and laptop businesses, though the Chinese company could substitute American suppliers with other companies such as MediaTek. The controls will strike at US companies more, which are already grappling with sliding revenues and huge layoff pressures, analysts warned.

From Rags To Riches: The True Inspirational Origin Story Of Malaysia’s Ramly Burger
Posted by: superadmin - 01-31-2023, 08:33 PM - Forum: Inspiring Stories - Replies (5)

Life isn’t easy and there are days we just feel like giving up. Sometimes we just a need an inspirational story to keep us going. There’s a lot of books, movies and TV series out there where the main character achieved their goal in the end.

While fiction can help, maybe all we need is 1 true story about someone who went from rags to riches to really get us motivated. From being rejected from a loan to start his own business to now exceeding RM1 billion in annual sales, here’s the story about the founder of popular burger brand, Ramly Burger.

Ramly Bin Mokni was born in Tanjung Piandang, Perak and raised in Sekinchan with his 16 siblings. Once he was old enough, he moved to Kuala Lumpur to find a job. How did the idea of owning a burger business come about? It was actually when a customer asked him back in 1978.

When Ramly was working in a supermarket, a customer asked him if there were burger patties made by a bumiputera as it wasn’t very popular back in those days, plus people weren’t very sure if the burger meats were halal. That ignited an idea in Ramly.

He then decided to create his own halal burger meat recipe with his wife, Shala Siah Binti Abdul Manap. Ramly went to apply for a RM7,000 loan at MARA (Majlis Amanah Rakyat) to start his business but sadly he was rejected. Instead, he used his own savings of RM2,000.
