Azmi Hassan, a former Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) lecturer, told FMT the Sabah-based party would bring a “breath of fresh air” to Peninsular Malaysia, where, he said, the gap between the races had been growing wider. “Sabahans are different,” he said. “If they say, ‘We want to promote Malaysia for Malaysians,’ people will believe them. “Sabah is what the peninsula was in the 1970s, when people of all races visited one another and ate together. The former prime minister will certainly appeal to the Federal Court to overturn this decision, just as certainly as he will burnish his public image in his continuing appeal to the court of public opinion. But, for now, four judges are in total agreement about Najib’s guilt in the sordid affairs of SRC International Sdn Bhd – a former 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) subsidiary. The proposals are dangerous and can lead to a totalitarian system reminiscent of autocratic regimes, where the people are at the mercy of officials whose subjective suspicions and discretionary powers will result in disproportionate and chaotic enforcement of the law and a breach of our fundamental rights. It’s worse that agencies such as local councils being given sweeping powers is cause for worry. Discretion leads to abuse of power and corruption.
