  Trust in China

Fraught U.S.-China relations will continue entering 2022. This year, leaders of both countries will be focused on domestic politics, the ongoing pandemic and uneven economic recoveries — challenges that have further added to existing bilateral tensions.

It is an important political year in both countries. U.S. President Joe Biden is facing midterm elections with the Republicans likely to gain seats in the House and potentially the Senate, complicating his administration’s ability to implement its policy agenda. By contrast, China's Xi Jinping is on the verge of assuming a third term as President and is strongly positioned to ensure that his vision for China is carried through.

World No 1 rips into BAM over Zii Jia’s 2-year ban
Posted by: superadmin - 01-21-2022, 08:11 PM - Forum: Badminton - No Replies

GEORGE TOWN: Men’s singles world No 1 Viktor Axelsen and a former deputy minister today ripped into the Badminton Association of Malaysia’s (BAM) two-year ban on national shuttler Lee Zii Jia.

The Tokyo 2020 Olympic champion took to Twitter, describing Zii Jia’s predicament with a euphemism of a disgruntled worker who left his job but was later banned by the employer from working anywhere else.

“Just listen how crazy this is. This is year 2022. Is this what we want for our sport?” the Danish player tweeted.

Zii Jia, the country’s No 1 men’s singles player, announced his resignation from BAM earlier this week. In response, BAM announced today that he will be banned from representing the country in international tournaments for two years effective Jan 18.

KUALA LUMPUR: Senior citizens, aged 60 and above, can get Covid-19 booster vaccines on a walk-in basis from Monday at offsite vaccination centres (PPVs) in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka, Penang and Sarawak.

ProtectHealth Corporation Sdn Bhd (ProtectHealth), a wholly owned subsidiary of ProtectHealth Malaysia established under the health ministry, said those going for the walk-in booster jabs need to show their MySejahtera app to prove that they have been fully vaccinated.

It said the walk-in services will start at 2pm on the days the offsite PPVs are in operation.

‘Shame on you BAM!’, netizens react over Zii Jia’s two-year ban
Posted by: superadmin - 01-21-2022, 06:33 PM - Forum: Badminton - No Replies

[Image: Lee-Zii-Jia-all-england-2021-yonex-twitter.jpg]

KOTA KINABALU: Netizens took to social media today to vent their anger over the two-year ban imposed by the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) on national shuttler Lee Zii Jia.

Zhewei Kung pointed out the shame was actually on the part of BAM, saying he believed Zii Jia would have been treated differently by the national associations in other countries.

“This is like an employee leaving your company but you as the boss telling him you cannot work anywhere again.

“Keluarga Malaysia right? We should have helped each other and not (resorted) to this action.”

Naim Yana was more straightforward with his comments. “Killing your own players’ careers just to please yourselves … shame on you BAM!”

China and Germany have pledged to enhance mutual understanding and refrain from "microphone diplomacy" on the basis of mutual respect on Thursday when Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks with German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock via video link.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Germany, an important year for both sides to commemorate, Wang said. Over the past 50 years, China and Germany respect each other and promote economic development and establish an all-round strategic partnership.

Wang congratulated again Baerbock on her appointment as the foreign minister of Germany.

A68: 'Megaberg' dumped huge volume of fresh water
Posted by: superadmin - 01-21-2022, 04:22 PM - Forum: Environment Protection News - No Replies

The monster iceberg A68 was dumping more than 1.5 billion tonnes of fresh water into the ocean every single day at the height of its melting.

To put that in context, it's about 150 times the amount of water used daily by all UK citizens.

A68 was, for a short period, the world's biggest iceberg.

It covered an area of nearly 6,000 sq km (2,300 sq miles) when it broke free from Antarctica in 2017. But by early 2021, it had vanished.

One trillion tonnes of ice, gone.

China’s factories face ‘rather large’ downward pressure in the first quarter

China’s factories face ‘rather large’ downward pressure in the first quarter, official says
  • The industrial economy still hasn’t seen a firm recovery, due to the global pandemic, weakening trade growth, lack of consumer demand and other factors, spokesperson Luo Junjie told reporters.
  • “On top of that, recently the coronavirus has spread to many places,” Luo said in Mandarin, according to a CNBC translation. “In the first quarter of the year, the industrial economy still faces rather large downward pressure.
  • Luo added that although the shortage in semiconductors has eased, supply will remain tight for a while.

BEIJING — China’s factory production faces “rather large” downward pressure for the first quarter, an official with the national Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said Thursday.

The industrial economy still hasn’t seen a firm recovery, due to the global pandemic, weakening trade growth, lack of consumer demand and other factors, spokesperson Luo Junjie told reporters.

“On top of that, recently the coronavirus has spread to many places,” Luo said in Mandarin, according to a CNBC translation. “In the first quarter of the year, the industrial economy still faces rather large downward pressure.”

Since late December and the entrance of the highly transmissible omicron variant into the country, local Chinese authorities have announced more lockdowns and travel restrictions to prevent Covid outbreaks from spreading.

These recent lockdowns would only have a short-term and limited impact on supply chains, Tian Yulong, chief engineer and another spokesperson for the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, told reporters at the same press event Thursday.

China cuts benchmark lending rate to bolster economy
Posted by: superadmin - 01-21-2022, 04:06 PM - Forum: Business, Economy and Investment - No Replies

[Image: 76092759-8417-47db-a1f7-0622c7cec54c.jpeg]

Just days after China cut a major interest rate for central bank lending to big commercial banks, and hours after central bank officials delivered a clear signal about monetary easing through promises of opening the monetary policy toolbox wider, the country took one further step toward capital easing by cutting the loan prime rate (LPR), the de facto benchmark lending rate, both in five-year and one-year terms, on Thursday.

Although the cuts are arranged according to loan periods, market observers said it's a sign of the government's urgent desire to boost market confidence and inject momentum into the real economy, as the country tried to achieve stable economic growth this year amid challenges including coronavirus and real estate weakness.

Compared with drastic US policies which usually upset the global market, China's policies, which are moderate and launched step by step, are more responsible and will not lead to wild vibrations in markets, observers said.

Two Sabah DAP state lawmakers, ex-senator quit party
Posted by: superadmin - 01-21-2022, 03:37 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

KOTA KINABALU, Jan 21 — Two DAP assemblymen and a former senator announced their resignation from the party last night, citing a loss of confidence in the party leadership.

Sri Tanjong assemblyman Justin Wong, Elopura assemblyman Calvin Chong and former senator Adrian Lasimbang said they were disappointed with the party’s leadership and direction, especially after the recent passing of the amendment to Art 1(2) of the Federal Constitution.

“There is a lack of trust portrayed by our leadership in the state committee, the state chairman in particular.

“The loss of direction, serious internal division, and almost defunct level of communication between leaders have caused us to believe that the party is no longer a party that will strive. And it is getting corrosive,” they said in a joint statement here last night.
