Civil societies call for clarification on SC’s statement on Azam’s shares trading

Civil societies call for clarification, say SC’s statement on Azam Baki’s shares may have contradicted govt rules

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 23 — The Securities Commission (SC) needs to provide documentary evidence and properly explain the share transactions in Tan Sri Azam Baki’s account for transparency’s sake, seven civil society groups said today.

The Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs; Transparency International Malaysia; Centre to Combat Corruption and Cronyism; Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections (Bersih 2.0); RasuahBusters; Gabungan Bertindak Malaysia; and Undi18, said the controversy surrounding the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief’s share acquisition in 2015 were no clearer despite the SC’s second statement.

In a joint statement, the seven groups noted there were apparent contradictions in the SC’s statements on the issue and urged the regulator to clarify whether any shares in Azam’s trading account were purchased and paid by his brother Nasir as the MACC chief alleged, and provide the documentary evidence showing to corroborate this.

They highlighted the statement issued by the SC where the regulatory body had stated the shares trading account was managed by Azam himself, which contradicted Azam’s previous statement mentioning the account was used by his brother to avoid a conflict of interest.

Expect Umno to dominate in Johor polls, say analysts
Posted by: superadmin - 01-23-2022, 01:20 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Analysts expect the upcoming elections in Johor to play out much like the polls in Melaka, with Umno – and Barisan Nasional by extension – likely to secure a dominant victory in the state it was born.

Yesterday, Johor’s Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar signed the notice to dissolve the state assembly after granting an audience to menteri besar Hasni Mohammad, paving the way for the elections to be held sometime before March 23.

Azmi Hassan, a senior fellow at the Nusantara Academy for Strategic Research, said he expected a big win for Umno owing not only to the party’s strength but also the weakness of rivals like Bersatu, PKR, DAP and PAS.

“The party that will lose most critically in Johor will be Bersatu,” he told FMT.

“They face an uphill battle if they go against Umno, which seems likely.

How a billionaire’s global cruise empire imploded in Hong Kong
Posted by: superadmin - 01-23-2022, 11:20 AM - Forum: Business. Economy and Investment - No Replies

HONG KONG: Lim Kok Thay started a cruise ferry and gambling boat business in 1990s Hong Kong and turned it into one of Asia’s biggest cruise operators.

It was a labour of love, as well as a way to diversify the casino business set up by his father, Lim Goh Tong, in Malaysia.

Under the now 70-year-old Kok Thay, Genting Hong Kong Ltd expanded its fleet of ships, bought other cruise lines and even added a string of German shipyards to build its vessels.

Now, more than two years into the coronavirus pandemic, Kok Thay’s company is headed for liquidation.

Genting Hong Kong filed a petition last week to wind up its business in one of the biggest stumbles by a cruise operator since the pathogen pummelled the industry.

It’s a stark example of how the coronavirus brought once-thriving businesses to their knees and has the potential to impact cruise customers across the region.

Omicron has changed the shape of the pandemic. Will it end it for good?
Posted by: superadmin - 01-23-2022, 11:15 AM - Forum: Covid-19 Pandemic - No Replies

[Image: 220121131419-germany-mask-requirement-exlarge-169.jpg]

(CNN)The world feared the worst when a worrying new coronavirus variant emerged in late November and ripped through South Africa at a pace not seen before in the pandemic.

But two months later, with Omicron dominant across much of the globe, the narrative has shifted for some.

"Levels of concern about Omicron tend to be lower than with previous variants," Simon Williams, a researcher in public attitudes and behaviors towards Covid-19 at Swansea University, told CNN. For many, "the 'fear factor of Covid' is lower," he said.

Capital appreciation: Indonesia’s Nusantara vs Malaysia’s Putrajaya
Posted by: superadmin - 01-23-2022, 09:14 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

It’s a name everyone in this region should know and understand. If you don’t, you haven’t been paying attention, or worse, you live in a sanitised (or putrid) bubble somewhere, oblivious to the history and culture of our region, or worse, the geopolitics of the day.

It is now also in the news for the prosaic reason that Indonesia has chosen it as the name of its new US$34 billion political administrative capital, situated in its Borneo territory of Kalimantan.

What’s in a name? What’s in a name indeed. Nusantara is an ancient name, having its etymology in the names of conquered territories of old Indonesian empires. I remember thinking of it, long ago, as an outdated and archaic name for the history books, and not one for the modern world.

Knockout blow for PAS, Bersatu at Johor polls, says Umno man
Posted by: superadmin - 01-23-2022, 08:53 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

JOHOR BARU: The impending Johor state assembly elections will be a knockout blow for Bersatu and PAS, according to Johor Umno deputy chief Nur Jazlan Mohamed.

He expects PKR and Amanah to lose most of the seats won in the 2018 general election, or even all, while DAP is likely to be considerably weakened.

He said based on current sentiments, it was obvious that Bersatu and PAS were not needed by Johoreans and would become “history” after the elections.

Most Johoreans expected Bersatu to lose any foothold it had gained in 2018. “The people have realised that the current Bersatu leaders left Umno because they were disgruntled with certain personalities or to escape prosecution,” he said.

We just want the truth about Azam’s shares, say PH
Posted by: superadmin - 01-23-2022, 08:49 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: ahmad-faizal-azumu-azam-baki-collage-220122-1.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: Opposition members who continue to highlight Azam Baki’s shareholding are seeking truth and transparency, and not being unpatriotic as claimed by Bersatu deputy president Ahmad Faizal Azumu, say Pakatan Harapan MPs.

Bukit Gelugor MP Ramkarpal Singh said any reasonable person would question the Securities Commission’s findings and the explanation given by Azam, the head of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission.

“Being unpatriotic by questioning the Azam Baki controversy isn’t the issue. It is called a controversy because the SC’s findings directly contradict Azam’s own explanation,” he told FMT.

He said Faizal had missed the point that the issue had to do with the integrity of the MACC and SC, and nothing to do with denting the morale of the civil service. “Leaders come and go, but the institutions must be defended at all times,” he said.

Petaling Jaya MP Maria Chin Abdullah was more blunt. “MPs are seeking the truth and asking for transparency,” she said.

YOURSAY | Maybe 'muda' optimism is exactly what we need
Posted by: superadmin - 01-23-2022, 08:45 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: 7dcb312dba627401e7520ce0d14dedbb.jpg=s800]

Myviews: Well done, young ones. Do not be afraid of what others say. Go ahead and chase your dreams. If you fall, pick yourself up and go at it again.

The road ahead is full of bumps and potholes, but persevere and you will eventually achieve what you set out to do. For those of us in our old age, we may not live long enough to see your achievements but as long as we're here, we will support you.

As far as we could see, Muda looked like a one-man party. That's not to say it's not good, but we think it might be a better idea if the party allow some of its key officeholders to take on a higher profile.

Let them occasionally come out with media statements. When your officeholders have a higher profile, it would be easier to identify them should they eventually stand as candidates in elections.

HardTruth: It's so refreshing to see new voices and fresh ideas. Our nation is heading towards self-destruction as we speak, thanks to the endless scandals and idiotic leaderships at key government institutions.

The future of the nation belongs to the youth and the time to change is now. If Muda is organised and effective in promoting and implementing what it preaches, support for the party will surely come.

Umno’s Nur Jazlan slams the door on PAS for Johor poll
Posted by: superadmin - 01-22-2022, 09:47 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

JOHOR BARU, Jan 22 — Johor Umno deputy chief Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed said there was no need for his party and the Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition to cooperate with PAS for the still unannounced state election here.

He said it should already be clear by now that BN will be contesting on its own in the premature Johor poll and the 15th general election.

“This means that there won’t be any cooperation between Umno and PAS or the Muafakat Nasional (MN) alliance, no matter what PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Mat said.

“That is his right. For me, let us leave it to fate after this,” said Nur Jazlan when met at the Johor Umno liaison office in Jalan Yahya Awal here today.

‘Desperate Umno court cluster’ forced Johor polls, says Bersatu man
Posted by: superadmin - 01-22-2022, 09:41 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Bersatu information chief Wan Saiful Wan Jan believes the decision to call for snap elections in Johor is down to the “court cluster” of Umno VIPs trying to stay in power and divert attention from their court cases.

“Perhaps the court cluster is increasingly desperate and feels that the only way to escape being imprisoned is by tearing apart the separation of powers,” he said on Facebook.

“I won’t be surprised if Johor will be followed by other states. Such is the reality of desperate people who are power-hungry and afraid of prison.”
