Zii Jia receives BAM’s approval to go pro, commits to Asia Team meet
Posted by: superadmin - 01-25-2022, 06:35 PM - Forum: Badminton - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR – Although national shuttler Lee Zii Jia will not be returning to the fold following his resignation from Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) on January 11, the Malaysian athlete may have his two-year ban lifted to enable the 2021 All England champion to compete in the Asia Team Championships from February 15-20.

According to a source in the badminton fraternity, Zii Jia and the national body have reached a consensus that the 24-year-old Kedahan will be playing as a professional in no time at all.

“The meeting today was about his appeal on the two-year ban (by BAM) with negotiations (on the matter) still ongoing − we will know more next week.

“However, he has received BAM’s blessings to go professional.”

Let’s fight BN together, Johor Bersatu man tells PH

PETALING JAYA: A Johor Bersatu leader has mooted the formation of a grand coalition with Perikatan Nasional (PN) joining hands with Pakatan Harapan (PH), Pejuang, Muda and Warisan in facing the upcoming Johor state elections.

The Johor Bahru division’s deputy chief Razrul Anwar Rusli said all parties that oppose Barisan Nasional (BN) should gather under one banner, adding that this was a formula that worked in the last general election (GE14).

Resign or retire: Jin Wei’s ‘contradictory’ explanations
Posted by: superadmin - 01-25-2022, 02:13 PM - Forum: Badminton - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR – There seems to be contradicting statements coming from former national women’s shuttler Goh Jin Wei as she takes to her YouTube channel to question the Badminton Association of Malaysia’s (BAM) decision to ban her from entering international tournaments for two years.

In a video posted on her YouTube channel on January 22, Jin Wei expressed her frustrations on the BAM council’s verdict, stating that they had no issues when she resigned from the national association in September of 2021.

“They had already accepted my resignation last year, and there was no objection for so long. Why is there an issue now?” she said.

Jin Wei, who was the top women shuttler prior to her abrupt retirement, now questions how she was able to register for the India Open that took place this month.

“Because I have respect for the national body, I had agreed for them to pull my name out of the tournament before I sat down with the management to discuss my plans.

“So how was I able to register for the event beforehand? It means that I have the right to play and I’m not breaching any policy,” she argued.

Malaysia drops 5 rungs in annual global corruption index

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia’s global rank in Transparency International’s annual Corruption Perceptions Index 2021 (CPI 2021) dropped five rungs, a stark contrast to the improvement seen after the 14th general election.

The country ranked 62 out of 100 in the latest report – the lowest since the methodology was revised in 2012. In 2020, it had ranked 57, a slight decrease from 51 in 2019.

In terms of score, Malaysia also dropped to 48 out of 100 from the 51 in 2020.

PAS won’t abandon ‘sincere’ Bersatu in Johor, says analyst
Posted by: superadmin - 01-25-2022, 01:27 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: PAS will not ditch Bersatu in the coming Johor elections despite their poor performance at the Melaka polls last November under the Perikatan Nasional banner, said a political analyst.|

Political observer Mohd Sayuti Omar said Bersatu is perceived as being more transparent and sincere than Umno.

In addition, PAS had a “bad history” with the Barisan Nasional when it was part of the coalition in the 1970s, he said. PAS felt they had been betrayed by Umno, leading to a political impasse in the Kelantan government that developed into protests and an emergency declaration.

PAS was also more trusting of Bersatu because of Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin, who comes from a pious family.

“Kelantan Umno’s decision to break its ties with PAS is all the more reason for PAS to continue working with Bersatu,” he said.

When the law appears to be an ‘ass’, there is a remedy – Rajan Navaratnam
Posted by: superadmin - 01-24-2022, 07:12 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: 20210524-scales_of_justice-freepik.jpeg]

“INJUSTICE anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” – Martin Luther King, Jr.

Charles Dickens, in the novel of Oliver Twist, had popularised the English proverb “the law is an ass, an idiot.” The proverb is expressed in the novel as follows:

“It was all Mrs. Bumble. She would do it, urged Mr. Bumble. That is no excuse, returned Mr. Brownlow. You were present on the occasion of the destruction of these trinkets, and, indeed, are the more guilty of the two, in the eye of the law; for the law supposes that your wife acts under your direction. If the law supposes that, said Mr. Bumble, squeezing his hat emphatically in both hands, ‘the law is an ass, an idiot’.”

The proverbial description of “ass” refers to the non-literary name of a donkey and relates to where the administration of a particular law and the inflexibility of its application would result in ridiculous and nonsensical verdicts that defeats the interest of justice.

If a particular law enacted does not encompass common sense, the strict application of the words stated in that piece of legislation would result in inconceivable injustice.

In this regard, the law appears to be an “ass” when it is not administered according to conscience and when participants of the legal system are more fixated on the letter of the law as opposed to the spirit of the law.

Lately, much ink has been spilt and comments expressed on the applicability and effectiveness of the Whistleblower Protection Act 2010 (the Act).

Section 6 of the Act states that a person may make a disclosure of improper conduct such as corruption or fraud to any enforcement agency, whilst Section 7 of the Act affords protection to a whistleblower who discloses any improper conduct pursuant to Section 6 of the Act.

Section 9 of the Act grants immunity to the whistleblower from any civil or criminal action as a result of any disclosure of improper conduct.

Opposition ‘won’t back down’ over Azam Baki case, Guan Eng says as Sungai Buloh MP’s aide faces MACC court charge

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 24 — DAP has asked how many more Opposition leaders will be subject to “reprisals and revenge” for calling for investigations into Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief Tan Sri Azam Baki’s alleged proxy share trading.

Its secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said this as R. Sivarasa’s service centre manager, KR Naveen, who is also his nephew, is expected to be charged in court with an alleged corruption offence today.

The PKR MP for Sungai Buloh had alleged that the MACC decided to reopen investigations into a 2017 corruption case involving Naveen after he raised the issue of Azam’s share ownership in the Dewan Rakyat.

“Since many Opposition MPs had also raised the Azam shares shenanigans in Parliament, does that mean they can expect to be hounded and framed with trumped-up charges by the MACC?

Selangor PAS wants to work with Umno in GE 15
Posted by: superadmin - 01-24-2022, 04:07 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Selangor PAS deputy chief Mohd Shafie Ngah says the state chapter remains committed to working with Umno under Muafakat Nasional (MN) and that this commitment is being “renewed” constantly.

The former Bangi assemblyman told FMT this was to ensure that it could achieve its agenda of uniting the ummah, adding that it was impossible to wrest Selangor from Pakatan Harapan without working with Umno.

While PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang had said the party could not remain with MN if Umno insisted on not accepting Bersatu in the fold, Shafie said Hadi’s statement must be balanced with each state chapter’s views and needs.

China’s zero-Covid policy could be weighing on currencies across the globe
Posted by: superadmin - 01-24-2022, 03:55 PM - Forum: Business, Economy and Investment - No Replies

  • Although commodity prices have soared so far in 2022, with Brent crude on Wednesday notching its highest price since October 2014, commodity-based currencies have been relatively subdued.
  • BMO Capital Markets European Head of FX Strategy Stephen Gallo suggested that ripple effects from China could be feeding into the performance of developed market commodity-based currencies.

China’s zero-Covid policy and broader economic circumstances could be weighing on currencies that should be reaping the benefits of higher commodity prices, strategists at BMO Capital Markets have suggested.

Although commodity prices have soared so far in 2022, with Brent crude on Wednesday notching its highest price since October 2014, commodity-based currencies such as the Norwegian krone and Australian, New Zealand and Canadian dollars have been relatively subdued.

As of Friday morning in Europe, the Aussie dollar was down 0.9% and the kiwi by 1.45% against the greenback year-to-date. The Canadian dollar was also down 0.9% year-to-date, while the U.S. dollar had gained 0.55% against the Norwegian krone.

“What we would typically expect to see is the New Zealand dollar rallying alongside agricultural commodity prices and Aussie rallying alongside base metals, but thus far this year, Aussie and Kiwi are both down — get this — against the euro and the yen,” Greg Anderson, BMO’s global head of FX strategy, said in a podcast last week.

Ballistic missiles intercepted over Abu Dhabi; U.S. State Department issues alert

  • The ministry confirmed that there were no casualties from the attack, and that “fragments of the ballistic missiles fell in different areas” around Abu Dhabi.
  • The targeted missile launch comes just one week after a deadly Houthi-claimed attack on Abu Dhabi that used what UAE officials say were drones and missiles.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — The United Arab Emirates intercepted two incoming ballistic missiles over its capital Abu Dhabi early Monday morning, state media agency WAM reported.

“The Ministry of Defence announced on Monday that its air defence forces had intercepted and destroyed two ballistic missiles targeting the UAE, which were fired by the Houthi terrorist militia,” the agency said.

The ministry confirmed that there were no casualties from the attack, and that “fragments of the ballistic missiles fell in different areas” around Abu Dhabi.

The U.S. State Department issued a security alert shortly after the attempted attack, warning Americans in the area to take precautionary measures.

“There have been reports of a possible missile attack and accompanying missile defense activity over Abu Dhabi early this morning. The Embassy reminds all U.S. citizens in the United Arab Emirates to maintain a high level of security awareness,” the alert read.

The targeted missile launch comes just one week after a deadly Houthi-claimed attack on Abu Dhabi that used what UAE officials say were drones and missiles. The strikes hit a fuel storage facility of state oil firm ADNOC and a construction site near Abu Dhabi International airport, killing three people.
