Intel sales hit record US$79 bil on chip demand as shortage lingers
Posted by: superadmin - 01-27-2022, 11:33 AM - Forum: Business, Economy and Investment - No Replies

SAN FRANCISCO – Intel yesterday said 2021 was a record year for sales at the chip maker as it navigated unprecedented demand and supply chain constraints.

The United States-based firm also saw costs rise and margins shrink as it shifted to a more sophisticated line of semiconductors, analysts noted.

“The fourth quarter represented a great finish to a great year,” said Intel chief executive Pat Gelsinger.

Intel revenue for last year tallied US$79 billion (RM332 billion), some US$20.5 billion of which it took in during the final three months, according to its earnings report.

Profit in the quarter was US$4.6 billion, however, in a 21% decrease from the same period a year earlier.

Profit for 2021 totaled $19.9 billion, about 5% less than the net income in the prior year.

Last year was marked by “unprecedented demand tempered by supply chain constraints” that are expected to continue through into next year, Gelsinger said during an earnings call.

A global computer chip shortage has afflicted a broad array of industries from smartphones and laptops to cars and home appliances.

US chip giant Intel finds itself at the heart of this phenomenon, benefiting from heightened demand but facing challenges producing ever more sophisticated semiconductors driving modern devices.

How to win the Malay vote – Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad
Posted by: superadmin - 01-27-2022, 11:23 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: 20220126-Nik_Nazmi-Nik_Nazmi_Facebook_pic.jpg]

HOW can PKR win the Malay vote – said to be a key weakness of ours – especially with the Undi18 reforms kicking in? First, we must understand where the community is at this moment politically.

Today, most Malays realise the flaws and failures of the Ketuanan Melayu and Negara Islam ideologies championed by Umno (as well as Bersatu) and PAS respectively.

They realise that these parties do not pursue radically different policies when in power, as opposed to their rhetoric in opposition.

Today Umno and PAS become mute on issues like the death of Muhammad Adib Mohd Kassim or the Buy Muslim First campaign that raged during the Pakatan Harapan (PH) era. There has been no closure to the Adib case.

The economic problems of the Muslims and Bumiputera remain the same.

The only difference is that where Umno and PAS leaders used to be in opposition, today they are ministers or directors of government-linked companies (GLCs).

The Ketuanan Melayu ideology still operates on the assumption that the Malay people are a poor, rural community.

However, the fact is that today, most Malays live in urban areas. Indeed, Malaysia’s urban population is now majority Bumiputera. The New Economic Policy (NEP) has created a Malay middle-class, although most of the B40s are still Malay and Bumiputera.

Zaid sees broken institutions as real cause of graft
Posted by: superadmin - 01-27-2022, 11:02 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Former law minister Zaid Ibrahim has called for recognition that “broken public institutions” must be repaired to give meaning to the fight against corruption.

“Our public institutions are corrupt,” he said, adding that it would not do enough good to just punish tainted individuals.

He was commenting on former chief justice Abdul Hamid Mohamad’s call to Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Barisan Nasional (BN) adviser Najib Razak to step down from their positions to clear BN of the taint of corruption linked to them.

Umno will make its own decisions on Johor polls, PAS leader told
Posted by: superadmin - 01-27-2022, 10:52 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Umno information chief Shahril Hamdan has hit back at PAS Dewan Ulama committee member Mokhtar Senik over his claim that the party is power hungry for offering PAS just four seats in the upcoming Johor elections.

Yesterday, Mokhtar said Umno seemed to forget the role PAS had played in earlier state elections in its eagerness to retain power without them. He said Umno should not seek to form a government without its Perikatan Nasional allies PAS and Bersatu.

In response, Shahril said that while all were free to give their opinions, Umno would make its own decisions in accordance with the views of its supreme council.

“But succumbing to pressure from external parties, not at all,” he declared in a Facebook post.

Parties eyeing Penang because DAP losing support, says analyst
Posted by: superadmin - 01-27-2022, 10:36 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: Chow-Kon-Yeow-dan-Lim-Guan-Eng-Penang-FMT.jpg]

GEORGE TOWN: Several parties, including two lesser-known ones, are eyeing Penang because DAP is losing favour among its supporters, an analyst said.

James Chin of University of Tasmania said the discontent was not just in Penang but throughout the country as shown by the party’s losses in the Melaka and Sarawak elections.

One of the reasons why the party’s Chinese supporters were unhappy was the non-recognition of the United Examinations Certificate (UEC) – a school-leaving examination for Chinese-medium high schools – even when Pakatan Harapan, of which DAP is a member, was in federal power.

Chin said the other frustration was their unhappiness with former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad over policies affecting the community. He said DAP’s insistence on supporting Mahathir had further eroded its support base.

PKR using own logo tells of a ‘disintegrating’ PH, says analyst
Posted by: superadmin - 01-27-2022, 10:20 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Pakatan Harapan’s decision to let PKR use its own logo in the upcoming Johor elections – while Amanah and DAP contest under the PH banner – is a sign of a “disintegrating coalition”, according to a political analyst.

Oh Ei Sun of the Singapore Institute of International Affairs said the decision spoke volumes about disunity in PH, especially after the coalition’s heavy loss in the Melaka polls in November.

PH won only five of the 28 seats up for grabs in Melaka, where it contested under the coalition’s banner, with. DAP winning four, Amanah one and PKR none.

Oh said he expected DAP and Amanah to be disappointed in PKR president Anwar Ibrahim for the decision on the use of party logos, since the two components looked to him as a uniting factor as the PH chairman, but the issue was being raised by his own party.

We’re at a new low if people say Gone lah Malaysia!
Posted by: superadmin - 01-26-2022, 07:19 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

It has been a frustrating 2021 for most Malaysians. Episode after episode involving disasters, political manoeuvres, race and religious extremism, poor decisions, exposes of corruption etc. have only led us to become more and more disenchanted.

Someone asked recently if most columnists and authors of opinion pieces in the Malaysian media have nothing positive to write about, as a good number of them appear to be only painting a grim picture.

My reply was simple. Some writers articulate their thoughts to try and reach out to the masses. Some do it for money while another group prefers to call a spade a spade, even at the risk of being sued or being called up by the authorities.

Those who choose to be honestly critical want to point out the terrible weaknesses that, if left unchecked, will slowly but surely destroy the institutions that should be protecting the nation.

PKR logo important, says MP on party’s ditching of PH logo in Johor
Posted by: superadmin - 01-26-2022, 07:16 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Bayan Baru MP Sim Tze Tzin has stressed the importance of PKR using its own logo at the upcoming Johor elections.

“In competitive seats where PKR is contesting, every vote counts,” he said on Twitter.

“I have first-hand experience from the Melaka state elections that familiarity with the PKR logo is important,” he added.

Earlier today, Pakatan Harapan chairman Anwar Ibrahim said that PKR will use its own logo at the Johor polls while Amanah and DAP will contest under the PH banner.

“With regard to our logo, a consensus has been reached. PKR will use its own logo while the other component parties will use the PH logo,” Anwar said.

Long Covid: doctors find ‘antibody signature’ for patients most at risk
Posted by: superadmin - 01-26-2022, 12:12 PM - Forum: Covid-19 Pandemic - No Replies

[Image: 2400.jpg?width=620&quality=85&auto=forma...9fcf12c9bb]

Doctors have discovered an “antibody signature” that can help identify patients most at risk of developing long Covid, a condition where debilitating symptoms of the disease can persist for many months.

Researchers at University hospital Zurich analysed blood from Covid patients and found that low levels of certain antibodies were more common in those who developed long Covid than in patients who swiftly recovered.

When combined with the patient’s age, details of their Covid symptoms and whether or not they had asthma, the antibody signature allowed doctors to predict whether people had a moderate, high or very high risk of developing long-term illness.

“Overall, we think that our findings and identification of an immunoglobulin signature will help early identification of patients that are at increased risk of developing long Covid, which in turn will facilitate research, understanding and ultimately targeted treatments for long Covid,” said Onur Boyman, a professor of immunology who led the research.

The team studied 175 people who tested positive for Covid and 40 healthy volunteers who acted as a control group. To see how their symptoms changed over time, doctors followed 134 of the Covid patients for up to a year after their initial infection.

Blood tests on the participants showed that those who developed long Covid – also known as post-acute Covid-19 syndrome (Pacs) – tended to have low levels of the antibodies IgM and IgG3. When Covid strikes, IgM ramps up rapidly, while IgG antibodies rise later and provide longer-term protection.
