Nothing less than royal inquiry needed on MACC fiasco: ex-chief adviser
Posted by: superadmin - 01-02-2022, 10:24 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR – The whole debacle surrounding the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and allegations against its top leaders require nothing less than the attention of a royal commission of inquiry (RCI).

This is according to MACC advisory board former chairman Tunku Abdul Aziz Tunku Ibrahim, who is urging for an immediate and independent probe into the anti-graft body.

Speaking with The Vibes, Aziz said the recent allegations of conflict of interest involving chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki made by renowned economist Prof Edmund Terence Gomez have called into question the credibility of the body.

As such, he said the RCI is necessary in order to clear the good name of the commission and identify if there were instances of impropriety.

“First of all, I think Gomez should make a police report if he believes there is a possibility of a cover up within the MACC,” he said yesterday.

Sinovac booster can activate cellular immunity against Omicron
Posted by: superadmin - 01-02-2022, 10:10 AM - Forum: Covid-19 Pandemic - No Replies

[Image: 25052021_-_KUL_-_sinovac_Covid19_Vaccine...ien-10.JPG]

KUALA LUMPUR – Preliminary results of a study conducted by the Pontifical Catholic University in Chile (UC) showed that the Covid-19 Sinovac vaccine booster dose could activate cellular immunity against the Omicron variant, on subjects who were given two doses of the same vaccine previously.

The objective of the study led by Millennium Institute on Immunology and Immunotherapy director Prof Dr Alexis M. Kalergis, was to assess whether the immunity activated by the Sinovac vaccine booster dose can recognise the Omicron variant.

Dr Alexis, in a statement released by Pharmaniaga today, said those who have received the Covid-19 Sinovac vaccine booster dose had T cell levels that are activated against the Omicron variant in a similar way to the original strain.

“This shows that the vaccine contains antigens that are found in the Omicron variant. The results show that when T lymphocytes come in contact with the Omicron variant, they are able to produce gamma interferon, which is capable of killing the dangerous virus,” he said.

Meanwhile, UC’s Academic and Scientific director for the CoronaVac Scientific-Clinical Study in Chile, Dr Susan Bueno said, it was most likely that partial recognition of these variants had contributed to the effectiveness of the vaccine among the population, despite the variants being widespread in Chile.

Muda registration, Undi18 may not affect GE15, say analysts
Posted by: superadmin - 01-02-2022, 09:29 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Analysts expect little to change in the political landscape even with the registration of Muda as a political party and the gazetting of Undi18 and automatic voter registration.

Former Universiti Teknologi Malaysia lecturer Azmi Hassan said Muda was not strong enough to go it alone in the next general election and Oh Ei Sun of the Singapore Institute of International Affairs said the new young voters would not necessarily be progressive.

“It will be an uphill battle for Muda to make an impact,” Azmi told FMT.

“The new party needs to be affiliated with a seasoned political party or an experienced politician.”

He suggested Warisan as an option, saying: “The Sabah-based party is eager to spread its wings to the peninsula. Maybe Muda and Warisan can work together. After all, Warisan has many experienced politicians.”

Umno and PAS set to clash in three states
Posted by: superadmin - 01-02-2022, 09:26 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: With seat talks going sour, the tension between PAS and Umno is building up in Kedah, Terengganu and Kelantan.

Although some Umno leaders at federal level are keen on continuing to work with PAS, a political analyst claims he has information that the story is different at the grassroots level.

“At the state level, there are challenges,” said Mohd Azizuddin Sani of Universiti Utara Malaysia. “Umno grassroots members in the three states do not want to share seats with PAS, and PAS wants more seats as it feels these are its stronghold states.”

He told FMT discussions in Terengganu had turned hostile. “Neither side is willing to give in. Both are demanding more seats and the talks are likely to fail.”

In Kedah and Kelantan as well, there had been no progress in the seat talks, he said.

Kelantan PAS is said to be meeting the state Umno leadership on Jan 22 to discuss cooperation for the next general election.

'No genocide in Xinjiang,' envoys, scholars reaffirm during press conference

'No genocide in Xinjiang,' envoys, scholars reaffirm during press conference by Xinjiang govt, Chinese Embassy in UK

[Image: 4447182d-3a52-45f5-b23c-930c5d7f5679.jpeg]

Diplomats, regional officials, family members of terror attack victims and regional and foreign scholars attended a press conference held jointly by the Xinjiang regional government and Chinese Embassy to the UK recently to exposed lies and refuted rumors made by anti-China forces on the region.

More than five years ago, many people in Xinjiang worried that terrorist attacks may occur at any time, with the region suffering from a history of attacks. But currently, all people in the Xinjiang region are living happy and stable lives and are confident about the future, Yang Xiaoguang, Minister of the Chinese Embassy to the UK said at the online press conference on December 29.

Yang noted that in 2020, Xinjiang welcomed 158 million tourists which means thousands of people had witnessed the development of the region with their own eyes and the moments they recorded in Xinjiang on their cameras showed that accusations made by anti-China forces are groundless.

"There is no genocide in Xinjiang… There is no forced labor in the region," Yang said, noting that the population of Uygurs increased 3.23 times over the past seven decades.

Echoed with the Chinese envoy, Graham Perry, a British solicitor and international arbitrator who also attended the online press conference said that there is no "oppression" of Uygurs in Xinjiang, nor is there any genocide.

Place MACC under Parliament for better accountability, says Aliran
Posted by: superadmin - 01-01-2022, 07:18 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: A group and an academic have called for the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to be parked under Parliament for better accountability.

This comes in the wake of the controversy over alleged share ownership by MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki and the resignation of an academic from an MACC oversight panel.

In a petition launched yesterday, Persatuan Aliran Kesedaran Negara (Aliran) called for the anti-graft agency to be moved from the Prime Minister’s Department to Parliament, where it could be supervised by a bipartisan parliamentary select committee (PSC).

The petition was initiated following the resignation of economist Edmund Terence Gomez from the agency’s Consultation and Corruption Prevention Panel (CCPP) on Dec 27 over the panel’s alleged refusal to entertain his request to have a meeting to discuss news reports that implicated Azam in alleged stock ownership.

YOURSAY | Judge’s ruling will not end attacks on vernacular schools
Posted by: superadmin - 01-01-2022, 09:39 AM - Forum: Stop Racism and Religious Bigotry - Replies (1)

[Image: 4efba1e873043ef7a510c35a585d97b8.jpeg=s800]

Dr Raman Letchumanan: While we welcome the judgment by High Court judge Mohd Nazlan Mohd Ghazali, who ruled that vernacular schools are constitutional, we should note that this matter should not have gone to court in the first place.

The Constitution is very clear on this provision, one of the few 'privileges' accorded to non-Malays such as vernacular schools, freedom of religion and worship, etc. Yet, each one of these gets challenged by the racist and religious bigots almost every other day.

Imagine if a non-Malay had challenged Article 153 or even asked for fairness in its implementation. Hundreds of police reports would have been made, and the person would be slapped with multiple charges, including sedition.

But this case goes all the way to court, and luckily an upright judge ruled in accordance with the Constitution. The case should have been struck off in the first place.

Even more alarming are the educated plaintiff and their learned lawyers, people we expect are liberal, tolerant and democratic. Many would have been western-educated in western languages.

To me, such people are the ones agitating for these kinds of divisive issues, not the ordinary Malays. The fact many Malays are registering their children in vernacular schools is because they want a better education for their children.

They cannot afford to send their children overseas, like these elite troublemakers who clamour to close down vernacular schools but send their children to international schools or overseas.

Anyway, the case is not over yet. There will be appeals to the Court of Appeal and the Federal Court, where decisions can be made by a simple majority. I wonder what punitive costs were made by this judge to stop such frivolous suits.

As the judge said, we are fortunate the Constitution is clear. He cautioned he would not interfere on matters of the legislature like national unity, national identity, etc. This is an ominous warning.

Environmental impact of floods will be long-term, devastating: experts
Posted by: superadmin - 12-31-2021, 05:26 PM - Forum: Environment Protection News - No Replies

[Image: 26122021_-_KUL_-_Hulu_Langat_flood_after...en-11.jpeg]

KUALA LUMPUR – Victims of the recent floods that devastated parts of Malaysia may still be reeling from the country’s worst natural disaster in recent history, but the impact is far from over.

Scientists have warned that the floods – which have killed dozens of people and caused destruction to countless properties – could now have long-term environmental ramifications.

They said the after-effects of the disaster could potentially threaten the health of the country’s rivers, seas, and aquatic life, although studies will have to be conducted to fully understand the true extent of the catastrophe.

Speaking to The Vibes, soil scientist Ghulam Mohammed Hashim said the floods have caused large quantities of chemical-laden soil to be eroded and pushed to low-lying areas.

He said this will contribute to sedimentation and pollution of streams, rivers, and seas.

The phenomenon, he added, was aggravated by widespread development in certain areas in the past, which has left behind loose earth.
