PETALING JAYA: Tenaga Nasional Bhd’s (TNB) net profit in the first quarter ended March 31, 2023 (Q1 FY2023) rose 12.2% to RM1 billion from RM893.1 million a year ago on the back of higher revenue and lower tax provisions which offset higher operating expenses.
Quarterly revenue was up 3.9% to RM12.63 billion from RM12.15 billion, on higher sales of electricity with demand growth of 0.8%, TNB said.
The increase was primarily attributed to lower tax provisions recognised in the current quarter, resulting from the higher utilisation of the reinvestment allowance incentive, the utility giant said in a filing with Bursa Malaysia today.

IN a startling revelation, a recent study conducted by the Asian Barometer Survey found that an alarming 50% of Malaysians consider corruption to be a routine and accepted part of their country’s social fabric.
The study highlighting the normalisation of corruption within society, particularly resonates among low-income groups residing in rural areas.
The findings serve as a wake-up call to the Malaysian government to take decisive action to combat corruption and restore faith in the integrity of the nation.
With transparency, robust anti-corruption measures and a focus on socioeconomic upliftment, Malaysia can pave the way for a brighter, corruption-free future.
University of Nottingham Malaysia honorary research associate and leading expert Dr Bridget Welsh warned that the Malaysian government must urgently address the underlying causes behind this acceptance and identify why corruption has become ingrained in society.

WHILE claiming that “certain people” had frequently sought him to join Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s unity government, PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang stated that PAS will only join a government where it has a dominant role.
It’s all about statistics for Hadi, which reminds us of Hadi’s famous ‘Jumlah sudah cukup’ (numbers are enough) remark on election night in November 2022.
The Perikatan Nasional (PN) deputy chairman made it clear that any offer to join the government should see PAS given a dominant role.
He said that of all parties in Parliament, PAS had the most parliamentary seats

WASHINGTON: The top Republican leader said today, after marathon talks, that he and the White House had agreed to a draft deal on raising the US debt ceiling and said Congress will vote on Wednesday – just days before the country plunges into default.
“After weeks of negotiations we have come to an agreement in principle,” Speaker Kevin McCarthy said in a statement from the House of Representatives.
McCarthy, who spoke with Biden today to try to close the deal, said he would consult again with the president tomorrow and oversee final drafting of the bill.
The House will “then be voting on it on Wednesday”.
Raising the debt ceiling – a legal manoeuvre that takes place most years without drama – allows the government to keep borrowing money and remain solvent.
The treasury estimated that it would run out of money on June 5.
