Putting instability behind: survey shows positive rating for new PM, administration
Posted by: superadmin - 02-10-2023, 05:44 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR – Over two-thirds of Malaysian voters have given 10th prime minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim a positive rating in a survey carried out during his second month in power following the 15th general election.

The survey carried out by the Merdeka Centre for Opinion Research concluded with Anwar’s approval rating standing at 68%, and only 20% of the voters reporting dissatisfaction with his performance as prime minister at that moment in time.

Some 54% voters reported as being satisfied at the performance of the new unity federal government, while 25% reported dissatisfaction.

“In our opinion, the survey results show a Malaysian electorate that is keen to put the instability that had mired the country’s politics in the past, and move on to provide room for the new leadership to prove themselves,” the pollster said in a statement today.

“While many accept the unity government, the public is also reserving their assessment on the new government.

Europe will engulf itself in war with offer of fighter jets to Ukraine: experts
Posted by: superadmin - 02-10-2023, 02:15 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

War is likely to engulf the whole of Europe if European countries provide fighter jets to Ukraine, Chinese experts warned, after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky made a surprise visit to the UK and France to push the case for fighter jets. Such a move will not only trigger a strong response from Russia, but will also drag more countries into the crisis and further escalate the situation, said experts.

In only his second overseas trip since the Russia-Ukraine crisis started nearly a year ago, Zelensky made visits to the UK and France on Wednesday. The Ukrainian president gave a speech to the joint houses of the British parliament in which he made a direct plea for more heavy weaponry, including fighter jets.

Zelensky thanked the British people for their support since "Day One" of the conflict, as Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said fighter jets were "part of the conversation" about aid to Ukraine.

Muhyiddin denies involvement in contract linked to son-in-law

PETALING JAYA: Former prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin has denied an allegation linked to a lucrative contract said to have been awarded to his son-in-law.

“I strongly deny this. This is a malicious lie created to smear my image and that of my family,” he said in a statement.

Muhyiddin said he was never involved in the awarding of the National Integrated Immigration System (NIISe) contract to IRIS Corporation Bhd, for which there had been an open tender.

He also said that the awarding of the contract was done in accordance with the government’s standard procedures and it was supervised by the finance ministry and other relevant ministries.

Muhyiddin said he had no say when it came to such matters.

How despicable for teacher to use religion as bait to football greatness
Posted by: superadmin - 02-09-2023, 07:04 PM - Forum: Stop Racism and Religious Bigotry - No Replies

A TEACHER has got what he deserved for having lured a Form Three school pupil in Kuala Lumpur to embrace Islam after claiming that doing so would boost his chances of becoming a national footballer.

Police have begun investigations into a report lodged against a teacher by the boy’s parents. On Feb 7 at 10.21am, the complainant, a Malaysian mother, reported the matter to the police, according to Cheras police chief Assistant Commissioner Zam Halim Jamaluddin.

The boy’s mother who identified herself as “Vasan” earlier claimed that the class teacher also told her 15-year-old son that “only Muslims are allowed to enter stadiums in Malaysia”.

The incident surfaced on Feb 3 when her son showed her the messages in a WhatsApp group created for the class by the teacher.

“When I looked through the messages, I noticed that the teacher told my son that if he wanted to join the national team, he had to be a Muslim. He then encouraged my son to convert and even asked the class to suggest Muslim names for him,” Malaysiakini cited her as telling a media conference in Petaling Jaya yesterday (Feb 8).

DAP’s Sheikh Umar to PAS: “Don’t insult BN, PH; you’re always in conflicts yourself”
Posted by: superadmin - 02-09-2023, 09:28 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

FORMER Johor State Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Paloh Sheikh Umar Bagharib Ali has taken a swipe at Kelantan Deputy Menteri Besar and PAS vice president Datuk Nik Mohd Amar Abdullah for insinuating that both Pakatan Harapan (PH) and Barisan Nasional (BN) will be on ‘collision course’ come the six state level elections in mid-2023.

“In my opinion, conflict happens everywhere and conflict will always be there. PAS itself has never shied away from conflict,” the DAP member pointed out in a statement. “Nik Amar needs a mirror. Be thoughtful. Don’t let it be like ‘spitting in the sky, falling on your own face’ (referring to the Malay proverb meludah ke langit, jatuh ke muka sendiri).”

As testament, Sheikh Umar said PAS has often been in a state of conflict since the Islamist party joined Semangat 46, Gerakan Rakyat (GERAK), Barisan Alternatif and even Pakatan Rakyat.

“In its recent history with other coalition parties, PAS has been unable to avoid conflict, especially after the absence of the late Tuan Guru Nik Aziz (Nik Mat),” observed Sheikh Umar.

Shift perspective on brain drain as it can benefit country: Fadillah
Posted by: superadmin - 02-09-2023, 09:25 AM - Forum: Local News - Replies (1)

JAKARTA – The brain drain phenomenon in Malaysia must be looked at from a different angle because the government can still benefit by utilising the expertise of Malaysians working overseas, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof.

Fadillah, who is also agriculture and commodities ministry said among factors influencing brain drain is the research field and the complete facilities and support services in places like Silicon Valley, United States – which can also enhance their expertise and potential.

“In Malaysia, many have moved to other countries, especially those in science and technology. (This is) due to the lack of ‘the whole value chain’ that can provide a conducive environment for them.

“Brain drain needs to be looked at from a different angle, like how citizens working abroad can contribute to the country. To me, if there is a declaration for the purpose, it will be good,” he said after a dinner with the Malaysian diaspora in Indonesia here tonight, in conjunction with his three-day working visit to Indonesia starting today.

Govt to table improved anti-stalking bill in Dewan: Ramkarpal

KUALA LUMPUR – A refined anti-stalking bill is set to be tabled at the upcoming parliamentary session at Dewan Rakyat, said Deputy Law and Institutional Reform Minister Ramkarpal Singh.

In a statement, Ramkarpal said improvements have been suggested on the draft bill under the Penal Code 2022 and the Criminal Procedure Code, following engagement sessions with various stakeholders since January.

“The unity government is committed to creating laws regarding the offence of stalking.

“From the engagement sessions, I have proposed improvements to the draft bill to ensure emphasis is given to this offence holistically, covering all aspects of legislation,” he added.

The sessions were held to re-examine the provisions of the two bills and receive stakeholders’ perspectives on the matter.

Stakeholders include the Attorney-General’s Chambers, the Prime Minister’s Department’s Legal Affairs Division, the Women’s Aid Organisation, and the Malaysian Bar.

‘Minister’ signed off on vaccine procurement sans AGC approval: Anwar
Posted by: superadmin - 02-08-2023, 05:26 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: 20230203_-_Anwar_Ibrahim_at_Osman_Bakar_...IF_008.JPG]

KUALA LUMPUR – It appears that parts of the Covid-19 vaccine procurement were done without prior approval from the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC).

This was revealed by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who said today that the purchases were signed off by a “minister” not in accordance with government procedure.

He told a press conference that Health Minister Dr Zaliha Mustafa will table a white paper on the dubious procurement process in the coming Parliament session this month.

“She will give the details,” Anwar said after chairing a cabinet meeting at the Prime Minister’s Office in Putrajaya today.

“Suffice it for me to say that we decided on the presentation of the white paper primarily because of the findings by the (health) ministry and law minister on irregularities and transactions or approvals given without following due process.
