PETALING JAYA: Putrajaya has been told to consider using traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) to treat Covid-19 in view of its success in China.
Seputeh MP Teresa Kok said the surge in Covid-19 cases in the country, which is expected to worsen, will add pressure on the health system, especially for patients needing intensive care (ICU).
Due to that, she urged the government to follow in the footsteps of China in fighting Covid-19 cases.
She said according to worldometers.info, the country of 1.4 billion reported only 300 active Covid-19 cases on April 22.

What’s wrong with Datukship for Pandelela, asks Sarawak DAP Youth |

PETALING JAYA: There is nothing wrong with awarding national diver Pandelela Rinong a “Datuk” title, says Sarawak DAP Youth.
Stampin DAP Youth chief Abdul Aziz Isa noted that several prominent figures in Malaysia had also received Datukships in their 20s, although “not all of them are making this country proud”.
“Some of them are even charged for being involved in organised crime and fraudulent, dodgy companies. Some of their achievements are unknown to the public but they are somehow given the ‘Datuk’ title,” he said in a statement.
His comments come after state youth and sports minister Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said it was not good to reward athletes every time they won something.
Karim also said there was no need to “spoil” 28-year-old Pandelela with a Datukship, adding that it would be “difficult for her to interact normally outside”.
Pandelela had won the gold medal in the women’s 10m platform at the Fina Diving World Cup two days ago, the first ever gold medal for Malaysia in this competition.

KUALA LUMPUR, May 7 — Umno President Datuk Seri Zahid Hamidi sees eye to eye with the party’s Youth Wing urging the government to immediately set up a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) into the revelations made by attorney general Tan Sri Tommy Thomas and former inspector-general of police Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador.
In a statement, the veteran politician then implored other Umno ministers to support and bring forward the recommendation made by Umno Youth so that immediate action can be taken.
“The exposure made by two former heads of important government organisations is very serious, especially since it involves political interference and corruption in these institutions that are supposed to be the backbone of constitutional integrity, rule of law and national security.

Multi-ethnic BN to suffer as Umno set to contest as many seats as possible on its own to deter Perikatan, analysts suggest
KUALA LUMPUR, May 5 — Barisan Nasional’s (BN) odds running up to the general election has become much more tenuous as the coalition's lynchpin party, Umno faces a tense relationship with the ruling Perikatan Nasional (PN) administration, according to political analysts.
Marred by poor performance in the last few general elections and fighting for relevance post-GE14, political analysts find both component parties MCA and MIC to be worse off and will face a very tough road ahead under the BN coalition, with Umno set to dominate the stage.
Universiti Teknologi Malaysia geostrategist Prof Azmi Hassan said Umno, which has the most influence in BN, had gone past “labelling” the coalition as “multi-cultural” and has instead rushed to merely win as many seats as possible.
“Umno grassroots are quite vocal that they want to contest all Malay majority seats, including Ayer Hitam and Tapah. Even though Datuk Seri M. Saravanan and Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong managed to scrape by [in the last election], the votes are coming from Umno voters,” he said.

Stop the use of Special Branch for political purposes, says DAP MP |

PETALING JAYA: DAP’s Charles Santiago has called on the prime minister and the Police Force Commission to put an end to the practice of using the Special Branch for political purposes.
“Otherwise, the erosion of confidence in the police force will prevail,” the Klang MP said in a short statement.
Santiago also said former inspector-general of police Abdul Hamid Bador had confirmed what had long been suspected, that the Special Branch was being misused by politicians.
He was responding to Hamid’s claim that the home minister attempted to install a new Special Branch director to gain better control over the division.
Hamid said the plan had been to ensure that the Special Branch would be more agreeable to following directives from the home ministry.
He also said minister Hamzah Zainudin had forced the Special Branch to conduct several operations for its own political purposes.

Five Eyes: Why New Zealand refuses to condemn China |

The Five Eyes alliance is an intelligence-sharing arrangement between five English-speaking democracies: the US, UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. It evolved during the Cold War as a mechanism for monitoring the Soviet Union and sharing classified intelligence. It is often described as the world's most successful intelligence alliance. But recently it has suffered an embarrassing setback.
Four of the members have jointly condemned China's treatment of its Uyghur population in Xinjiang province. They have also expressed concern over China's de facto military takeover of the South China Sea, its suppression of democracy in Hong Kong and its threatening moves towards Taiwan, which China has vowed to "take back" by 2049. One country, though, has opted out of confronting China: New Zealand.
Surprisingly, perhaps, for a nation that prides itself on respect for human rights, New Zealand's Foreign Minister Nanaia Mahuta declined to join in this Western condemnation of Beijing, saying "it felt uncomfortable" with expanding the alliance's role by putting pressure on China in this way.
Although New Zealand's Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern admitted on Monday that its differences with China are becoming "harder to reconcile", the country still prefers to pursue its own bilateral relations with Beijing.

Pakatan MPs lodge police reports over ex-IGP’s claim of political interference in force, to push for RCI
KUALA LUMPUR, May 4 — Several Pakatan Harapan (PH) MPs today lodged police reports after former top cop Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador’s exposé, alleging political interference within the agency.
Five MPs lodged individual police reports, while Lembah Pantai MP Fahmi Fadzil lodged a separate one on the recently reported allegation by Abdul Hamid that Home Minister Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin was meddling with Special Branch (SB) for political mileage.
Fahmi told members of the media here that the PH leadership would also be meeting to pressure the government to form a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) to probe Abdul Hamid’s claims about the issues faced by the police force.

Investors want our neighbours and not us, says Rafidah |

PETALING JAYA: Senior minister for economy Azmin Ali’s remark that the country was being more selective in accepting investments is “the most stupid statement”, says former trade minister Rafidah Aziz.
She said the reality was that neighbouring countries were now more attractive in terms of their investment environment.
Last month, Azmin had denied that Malaysia was losing out on foreign investments to its neighbours, and said the country has become more selective in its investment agenda and wanted to attract quality investments.
Rafidah, who was Malaysia’s longest-serving international trade minister, responded: “That’s the most stupid statement to make. As if we have all these people wanting to invest (in Malaysia). My goodness, we don’t talk like that.
“People will say ‘go to hell’. Your neighbours are more attractive in terms of their investment environment, not because we are selective. The investors don’t want us.”
In January, it was reported that foreign direct investment inflow into Malaysia dropped by 68% in 2020, a larger decline compared to regional neighbours like Singapore, Indonesia and Vietnam.
