KEPALA BATAS – Another reclamation project in Penang is facing tough criticism as state opposition chief Datuk Muhamad Yusoff Mohd Noor submitted a memorandum of protest to the state Environment Department (DoE) against the 407ha sea reclamation project in Seberang Prai Utara.
Yusoff said the protest was submitted after his party examined the executive summary of the environmental impact assessment (EIA) report, as well as discussions with locals.
“Tasek Gelugor Umno has 86 branches with 20,071 members. We think this project should be cancelled because it has a serious impact on the socio-economy and the environment,” he told reporters today.

PETALING JAYA: Election watchdog Bersih 2.0 has urged political parties in the Melaka state election on Nov 20 to pledge that they will not accept “frogs” after the polls.
“There is a chance that this will be a close election, with the winner having a small advantage in terms of seats. We do not want any party hopping to take place after the election.
“We call on all contesting parties to make a cross-party pledge that they will not take in frogs after the election,” said Bersih 2.0 chairman Thomas Fann in a virtual press conference today.
Bersih 2.0 also issued a five-point challenge to all contesting parties, including reforms that need to be implemented in Melaka to guarantee political stability and discourage party hopping.
It called for enactments to control party hopping to ensure political accountability and allow recall elections to be held in the state.

Islamic State in Afghanistan could have capacity to strike US next year

The US intelligence community has assessed that Islamic State in Afghanistan could have the capability of attacking the United States in as little as six months – and has the intention to do so, a senior Pentagon official has told Congress.
“The intelligence community currently assesses that both Isis-K [Islamic State Khorasan Province, the Afghanistan-based group] and al-Qaida have the intent to conduct external operations, including against the United States, but neither currently has the capability to do so. We could see Isis-K generate that capability in somewhere between six or 12 months,” said Colin Kahl, under secretary of defense for policy.
The remarks are the latest reminder that Afghanistan could still pose serious national security concerns for the US even after it ended its two-decade war in defeat in August.

34 years after Ops Lalang, still no sincere apology by Dr M

From Kua Kia Soong
Operation Lalang was Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s worst abuse of power during his 23-year rule when he arrested and detained more than a hundred innocent Malaysians without trial under the infamous Internal Security Act (ISA) in 1987.
It happened to be his most desperate attempt at clinging to power.
It was a time during his term when he was faced with the biggest threat to his rule, with Team B under Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah challenging the results of the Umno elections. A court decision in Team B’s favour would have meant the end of Mahathir’s grasp on power.

China achieves quantum computational advantage in two mainstream technical routes

A Chinese research team has successfully designed a 66-qubit programmable superconducting quantum computing system named "Zuchongzhi 2.1," significantly enhancing the quantum computational advantage.
This remarkable feat makes China the first country to achieve a quantum computational advantage in two mainstream technical routes – one via photonics quantum computing technology and the other via superconducting quantum computing technology, the team noted.
The study was led by renowned Chinese quantum physicist Pan Jianwei and was published online on Monday Beijing Time in the journal Physical Review Letters and Science Bulletin.
In December 2020, the researchers built the quantum computer prototype, "Jiuzhang," through which up to 76 photons were detected, achieving quantum computational advantage.

Chinese and US senior officials on Tuesday held talks for the third time in October on economy and trade issues, following frequent high-level talks over the past months. The frequent China-US economic and trade talks have been substantive and groundbreaking, sending a very positive signal to the world.
Chinese Vice Premier Liu He, who is also chief of the Chinese side of the China-US comprehensive economic dialogue, held a video conversation with US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen on Tuesday morning, and expressed concern over the US' additional tariffs and sanctions and its treatment on Chinese companies.
Although the two sides still have differences regarding their own concerns, the calls suggest a positive sentiment for future discussions in which the two sides could seek common ground while reserving differences, analysts said.
Following this latest round of talks, it is expected that the US Trade Representative (USTR) and the US Department of Commerce might roll out measures to lift additional tariffs on Chinese goods, at least in an indirect way, Gao Lingyun, an expert at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences in Beijing who closely follows trade issues, told the Global Times on Tuesday.
