YOURSAY | Dog-whistle politics - DAP blamed again |

BusinessFirst: I am really tired of this monotonous anti-DAP rhetoric (this time it’s in the form of Bersatu information chief Wan Saiful Wan Jan calling those wanting to weaken Perikatan Nasional [PN] agents of DAP).
It seems like in lieu of policy or ideas which is perhaps beyond these so-called elites, the lazy way is just to name call, tell lies, defame, and when all else fails, play the race and religion cards which is summed up by one word - "DAP".
It does not matter that the DAP is not the cause for 1MDB, the failures of MAS (multiple times) and other government-linked companies, Tabung Haji and Felda scandals, Mara overpriced hotels, condos for cows, people dying in prison/remand or falling out of windows when they are interviewed by the MACC.
It does not matter that DAP is not the cause of foreign leaders ‘donating’ hundreds of millions to political leaders, corruption, abuse of power, threats to the rule of law, double standards between elites and normal people, jumping political leaders with no ideals except to climb materially or politically undermining the democratic choice.
It does not matter that the party also is not the cause of potholes on streets, poor health and educational infrastructure, especially in East Malaysia, having to climb trees and telephone poles or hike up hills for Internet connection, declining educational standards where some of our fresh graduates earn much less than the elderly in Singapore who work as part-time cleaners, poverty in the country, unemployment, declining foreign investment, brain drain, growing religious extremism and erosion of our Malaysian culture and heritage with something alien from Arabia, etc.
When you have no answer on how to solve the above, just scream "DAP".
The sad thing is, just like when it comes to drugs, logic tells you it is not good for you, yet there are still dealers. Why? Because there are consumers. I suppose we will continue to hear this drivel in lieu of serious discussions so long as this cry still resonates with some part of the electorate.
I know people say you deserve the government you get. Hence, we see the decline in Malaysia relative to so many countries. Initially, Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan and South Korea. Now we see Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia surpassing us too.
As a Malaysian, how can you from the bottom of your heart not feel despair and be heartbroken?

- Denmark has announced that it is to temporarily suspend the use of the coronavirus vaccine developed by AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford.
- The precaution comes “after reports of severe cases of blood clots in people who have been vaccinated with the COVID-19 vaccine from AstraZeneca.”
- “It is important to emphasize that we have not opted out of the AstraZeneca vaccine, but that we are putting it on hold,” the country’s National Board of Health said.
- The AstraZeneca-University of Oxford vaccine is being relied upon heavily in the U.K. and European Union’s immunization rollouts.
LONDON — Denmark announced Thursday it will temporarily suspend the use of the coronavirus vaccine developed by AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford.
The Danish Health Authority said it would temporarily stop using the shot in its vaccination program as a precaution “after reports of severe cases of blood clots in people who have been vaccinated with the COVID-19 vaccine from AstraZeneca.”
“Against this background, the European Medicines Agency has launched an investigation into the AstraZeneca vaccine. One report relates to a death in Denmark. At present, it cannot be concluded whether there is a link between the vaccine and the blood clots,” the health authority said in a statement.
It did not specify how many reports of blood clots there had been, or where they had originated.

Like us, yeast produce carbon dioxide - but scientists have found a way to modify one species to suck the greenhouse gas out of the air instead. They are now working to scale it up and hope to see huge tanks of yeast built next to factories, so it can capture their carbon dioxide emissions before they enter the atmosphere.

PETALING JAYA: Dewan Negara president Rais Yatim has no right to issue statements on behalf of the Election Commission (EC) over the decision to lower the age of voting to 18 and it is shocking and premature of him to do so, a PKR leader and PPBM Youth said.
PKR deputy information chief G Manivannan said Rais should not be pre-empting the EC, even if it was facing technical problems.
“For a person who is not within the circles of the EC to make such a statement creates uneasiness.
“If there are any prevailing issues, EC should be highlighting the issues, not Rais,” the lawyer said in a statement, adding that the separation of powers had to be respected.

(CNN)A second wave of Covid-19 is ripping through Brazil, pushing hospitals and ICUs toward collapse and claiming record numbers of daily deaths.
While a new variant of the coronavirus spreads throughout the country, many Brazilians continue to defy mask mandates mobility restrictions following the example of President Jair Bolsonaro, who recently said people need to "stop being sissies" and "whining" about the virus.
The consequences of that combination are deahttps://cdn.cnn.com/cnnnext/dam/assets/210310165338-02-brazil-covid-icus-intl-exlarge-169.jpgdly, experts say. "We are going through the worst-case scenario since the beginning of the pandemic. You just have to look at the trends in the average number of deaths," Gonzalo Vecina Neto, a Sao Paulo University professor of Public Health, recently told Reuters television. "This could have been avoided and the most important factor is gatherings."
Brazil has broken its own record three times this month for number of deaths in a 24-hour period. On Wednesday, Brazil's Health Ministry registered a devastating new high -- 2,286 lives lost to the virus. In total, more than 270,000 people are known to have died due to Covid-19, making Brazil's the second-highest national death toll after the United States.

A woman crashed her car into a freezing river. A FedEx driver saw it happen and saved her
(CNN)A FedEx Express driver is being hailed a hero by police after he jumped into freezing water to save a woman who had crashed her car.
Brandon Alt said he was just getting started on his delivery route that goes through Truckee, California, on Monday, when the car in front of him veered off the road and into the river below.
"As I was following her she was weaving in and out of the lane," Alt, 34, told CNN on Wednesday. "She almost hit two vehicles that were coming in the opposite direction."
They were traveling on River Road, a winding road that offers a scenic view of the area with the Truckee River on one side. The river is an outlet of Lake Tahoe and flows more than 120 miles crossing into Nevada.
"One wrong move and there's not much separating between the roadway and river," California Highway Patrol Officer Jacob Williams told CNN.
The driver of the car was distracted by her phone, according to police. She told them she was going to call a family member to sing "Happy Birthday."
"By the time she looked up she was heading into the river," said Williams.

Probe Hadi over preconceived plan to create political instability, says MP |

PETALING JAYA: A DAP MP has urged the police to probe Abdul Hadi Awang over a preconceived plan to create political instability, after the PAS president said the plot to topple the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government had started ever since it won the last elections.
Klang MP Charles Santiago said police were usually quick to investigate any alleged attempt to create political instability, although he did not see the same zeal in probing Hadi over his comments.
Santiago said the change in government in late February last year had led to the stock market going down, investors staying away and the people’s vote being nullified due to the “coup”.
“So why wasn’t Hadi, who seems to know more, called in for questioning?” he asked in a statement today.

Sarawak DCM: PAS, Umno’s demand for Putrajaya to appeal ‘Allah’ decision ridiculous |

KUCHING, March 11 — Sarawak Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri James Masing today criticised Umno and PAS for urging the government to appeal the decision by the High Court to allow a judicial review by a Sarawakian Christian to use “Allah” in her religious education.
Masing branded the demand as ridiculous, especially by any political party in a multi-religious and multi-racial country like Malaysia.
“It is my hope that we should allow men of religion and court to decide on religious issues and not politicians,” Masing who is also Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) president told Malay Mail said when asked to respond to the statement issued by Muafakat Nasional (MN).
He reminded the two parties that demanding the federal government to go against the court’s judgment is tantamount to seeking a review of Article 11 of the Federal Constitution that allows for freedom of religion in the country.
