PAS no longer keen on Muafakat Nasional, says Umno veteran |

PETALING JAYA: It is clear that PAS is no longer interested in strengthening its Muafakat Nasional (MN) pact with Umno, party veteran Shahrir Abdul Samad said after the Islamist party announced it would strengthen its cooperation with PPBM in the coming general election.
Shahrir said with that stand, Umno ministers also do not have to wait for Parliament to be dissolved to leave the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government led by Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin.
“PAS and PPBM are rejecting any attempts to threaten the PN government. PAS is no longer strengthening MN which now belongs only to Umno and Barisan Nasional.
“The latest joint statement by PPBM and PAS defending the PN government puts BN lawmakers in an awkward position. There is now no need for them to wait until Parliament is dissolved,” he said in a Facebook post.

KUCHING: Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) president James Masing hopes PPBM will keep its promise not to contest for state and parliamentary seats in Sarawak.
He said Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS), the ruling coalition, had been given such an assurance during a meeting with leaders of PPBM last year.
“We were assured that PPBM will not participate in any election in Sarawak, so we expect them to keep their word.
“A promise is a promise. No one should break a promise to serve their political convenience. If PPBM reneges on its promise, then we have no choice,” he added, hinting GPS would go against PPBM to defend Sarawak’s rights and interests.

We said we prefer southern alignment for ECRL, says Selangor MB |

SHAH ALAM: The Selangor government is still maintaining its stance in choosing the southern alignment for the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) project in the state, compared with the proposed northern alignment, said menteri besar Amirudin Shari.
He said the southern alignment (Hulu Langat-Sepang-Westport) was chosen because it would open more new economic areas, apart from avoiding disruption to water catchment areas around the Selangor River Basin and land acquisition issues, as well as population relocation in areas involved in the proposed northern alignment (Gombak-Serendah-Port Klang).
“The old route (northern alignment) has long been rejected and we have completed all studies on the southern alignment.
“The issue of expediting or delaying (the ECRL project) is due to the federal government’s decision to revert to the northern alignment,” he told a press conference here today.

A dangerous coronavirus variant is wreaking havoc in parts of Europe. Experts fear US could be next
The B.1.1.7 variant, first spotted in the UK, is more contagious, may cause more severe disease and is rapidly infecting younger populations, epidemiologist Michael Osterholm told CNN on Tuesday night. Recent research suggests the strain may also be more deadly.
"If we can just hold out, if we can just get enough vaccine between now and the summer, we can actually beat this one," Osterholm said. "But... we're impatient."

Slap in the face for Umno from PAS |

In last weekend’s 75th Umno general assembly, some delegates called on PAS to unequivocally state whether it wished to work with Umno or PPBM.
These calls came after Umno adopted a resolution which said it would not cooperate with PPBM in the next general election (GE15). The Umno Supreme Council was given the mandate to decide when to ask its ministers in the Perikatan Nasional-led government to quit their posts.
Umno Youth chief Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki was the most prominent party leader to call on PAS to choose “once and for all” whether it wanted to be with his party or PPBM.
PAS answered it today in a way that Umno wouldn’t have expected. Instead of issuing a statement or calling up Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, PAS showed its stand in action: Its president Abdul Hadi Awang met PPBM chief Muhyiddin Yassin yesterday.
And today, PAS and PPBM issued a joint statement saying the presidents decided to strengthen their collaboration in PN and work together in GE15.
The statement also said PAS and PPBM, as the founding parties of PN, had decided to establish a committee to formulate specific strategies to face GE15, including negotiations on seat distribution.
Can there be a clearer answer for Asyraf and Umno?

Water dispute: Kedah will insist on payment from Penang even if federal govt intervenes, says mentri besar
ALOR SETAR, March 31 ― The Kedah government still insists on raw water supply charge to be imposed on Penang, even if the matter is brought to the federal government to be solved.
Mentri Besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor said every development project that had been planned, especially in the Sungai Muda area, would proceed for the benefit of the people in Kedah.
He said this included the riverside water catchment project known as Takungan Air Pinggiran Sungai (TAPS) to stabilise Sungai Muda’s water level during the dry season and water supply for the people of Kedah.
Even if the federal government were to intervene, it should be towards making Penang pay the price of raw water to Kedah, he told reporters after witnessing the signing of a joint venture agreement between Permodalan Kedah Berhad (PKB) and Open Road Asia Sdn Bhd at Wisma Darul Aman here today.
