Probe offers to ‘buy’ MPs, PH tells MACC |

PETALING JAYA: Pakatan Harapan has called on the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to investigate claims that certain parties are offering money and ministerial positions in exchange for support for the Perikatan Nasional-led (PN) government.
The PH presidential council said at least seven of its MPs — representing Rasah, Kota Melaka, Ipoh Barat, Kulim Bandar Baharu, Setiawangsa, Kuala Kedah and Alor Setar — were offered these “incentives”.
“If the MACC fails to investigate, it will prove the allegation that the government organisation is being used as a weapon for the political survival of certain parties and does not uphold the rule of law.
“It is well-known that Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin has lost his majority and still refuses to resign, based on Article 43(4) of the Federal Constitution.

Why probe our commissioners, Suhakam asks cops |

PETALING JAYA: The Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) has expressed disappointment that police have summoned its commissioners for questioning when they were only doing their duty under the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia Act 1999.
Suhakam said it was mandated under the Act to exercise any or all of its powers, including monitoring the human rights situation in the country.
“Suhakam’s presence at the recent ‘Keluar’ and ‘#Lawan’ assembly on July 31 was in line with its function, which is to monitor public assemblies,” it said in a statement today.
It said since its inception, its commissioners or officers have never been summoned by police for questioning when monitoring any event.
Suhakam said the action to investigate its commissioners and other human rights defenders, including representatives from the Malaysian Bar Council, for monitoring a peaceful assembly was a regressive move and against the spirit of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 and the UN Declaration on Human Rights Defenders.

PETALING JAYA: An MP from the current Perikatan Nasional (PN) government can be appointed prime minister to replace Muhyiddin Yassin, provided his successor wins a confidence vote in the Dewan Rakyat, a lawyer said.
Bastian Pius Vendargon said Muhyiddin could convene a session as soon as possible to allow the 220 MPs to vote to determine whether that candidate enjoyed majority support.
“The Yang di-Pertuan Agong can appoint the candidate as prime minister if the confidence motion succeeds. However, Article 43 (4) of the Federal Constitution kicks in if the candidate fails to get the support of at least 111 MPs,” he told FMT.
As required under that Article, he said Muhyiddin has to tender his resignation if the King declines his advice to dissolve the Dewan Rakyat for fresh polls.

The Taliban say they have taken control of the city of Sheberghan in the northern Afghan province of Jawzjan.
An Afghan defence ministry spokesman told the BBC government forces were still in the city and would clear out the Taliban "soon".
This is the second regional capital to fall to the militants, after Zaranj in the south-western province of Nimroz fell on Friday.
It is a major blow to security forces, with battles raging across the country.
There are also reports of heavy fighting in Kunduz in the north and Lashkar Gah in the south.
Violence has escalated across Afghanistan after US and other international forces began to withdraw their troops from the country, following 20 years of military operations.

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 8 — The financial stress faced by Malaysians since the pandemic began in the country last year has gone up some 35 per cent, according to a recent study by the Credit Counselling and Debt Management Agency (AKPK).
The study titled “Money and Mental Well-Being” conducted last year found more than 65 per cent out of 3,115 Malaysians interviewed felt that financial stress has affected their job performance, The Sunday Star reported today.
And 41 per cent admitted that financial stress has taken a toll on their mental health.
“A domino effect occurs when a worker’s worried state of mind affects their job performance,” AKPK chief executive officer Azaddin Ngah Tasir was reported saying.

Greed, lust is the political capital now |

From Tariq Ismail Mustafa
It has been 48 years since the late Dr Ismail Abdul Rahman left us. His legacy for us was an independent nation headed towards a bright future, centred on a constitutional monarchy democracy that was strong and respected by all.
If he could see the current state of the country he helped build, he would be disappointed and angry to witness this nation whose universal values have been torn asunder by the greed and voracious appetites of power-hungry politicians.
Who would have thought that the generation that he entrusted to continue the struggles of our forefathers to defend the fate of the people and the country is now the Brutus to his Caesar.
It is an abomination that the state of current politics is such that the prime minister leads a band of politicians whose loyalties can be horse-traded to provide political sanctuary for him and the Perikatan Nasional.
Where in the past the welfare of the country formed a common political objective that bonded the political parties, the situation is quite the opposite now. It is the personal political benefits that is the priority. Now, greed and lust is the political capital to the point it treads upon the Federal Constitution, the King and the country.

PN could stay if Muhyiddin goes, say analysts |

PETALING JAYA: Political analysts believe the Perikatan Nasional-led (PN) government can retain its grip on Putrajaya and regain the support of Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi if Muhyiddin Yassin is replaced as prime minister.
Universiti Teknologi Mara’s (UiTM) Iskandar Hasan Tan Abdullah said the move could help resolve the political crisis in the country while the government struggles to manage the Covid-19 and economic crises.
“What we are seeing is Umno’s attempt to withdraw support for Muhyiddin. A withdrawal from the PN government is only because Muhyiddin has not stepped down as prime minister.
“If PN understands this strategy, then their most appropriate step is to appoint another MP from the PN government as prime minister. One who can gain the support of Umno as well,” the UiTM, Kelantan branch lecturer told FMT.
Salawati Mat Basir from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) agreed, saying that the situation remains fluid until Muhyiddin’s majority is tested in September.

Ismail Sabri’s botched show of majority support |

Malaysians are facing their worst times both in terms of the ravaging Covid-19 pandemic and a political system that has been impaired, not because the people made the wrong choice at the previous general election but by placing our trust in some wrong leaders.
One party lost a good number of MPs elected on its ticket and is crying “give back our seats”. The other party appears to be trying to poach more MPs with the sole intention of remaining in power.
MPs have been openly claiming they have been approached, but no one can say for sure whether the “offers” actually came from the poachers as claimed.
In an electoral system such as ours and based on how Malaysians vote, the choice of the people has always been about the party and never the individual. For an MP to hold on to the seat while joining another party or sitting as an independent is tantamount to an act of political fraud upon the voters.
