Pact against ‘arrogant’ BN possible – minus DAP, says PAS man
Posted by: superadmin - 01-29-2022, 12:05 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: An alliance against the “arrogance” of Umno and Barisan Nasional could come about in the Johor state elections, says a member of the PAS central leadership.

Mahfodz Mohamed, who sits on the central committee, said cooperation between PAS and opposition parties could come about – provided the opposition party is “not extreme” and, if the party is a member of Pakatan Harapan, is ready to leave the DAP behind.

He said Umno had been increasingly keen to sideline PAS, its ally in the Muafakat Nasional pact, the moment Umno leaders returned to power in Putrajaya.

However, Umno should have realised that their comeback after their massive defeat in the 2018 general election had been with the help of PAS, when the former ruling party won many subsequent by-elections.

Used cars turn to gold with Sri Lanka almost bankrupt
Posted by: superadmin - 01-28-2022, 06:08 PM - Forum: Business, Economy and Investment - No Replies

[Image: sri-lanka-colombo-reuters-19032019-1.jpg]

COLOMBO: Supermarket shelves are bare and restaurants can’t serve meals, but Sri Lanka’s economic crisis is a bonanza for used car dealers, with vehicle shortages pushing prices higher than a house in a nice area.

The island nation of 22 million is on the brink of bankruptcy, inflation is red hot and the government has barred a range of “non-essential” imports to save dollars needed to buy food, medicine and fuel.

In the car market, this two-year ban has kept factory-fresh automobiles off local roads, forcing desperate buyers to pay some of the world’s highest prices for beaten-up compacts and no-frills family sedans.

MACC part of the problem, not solution, to worsening graft, say PH leaders
Posted by: superadmin - 01-28-2022, 05:57 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is not the solution to combating worsening corruption in the country, but part of the problem, two opposition leaders say.

This comes after Malaysia fell once again in Transparency International’s latest Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) rankings, sitting at 62nd in the world, having been ranked 57th in 2020 and 51st in 2019.

After the rankings were released on Tuesday, the MACC said it would continue to pay serious attention to combat corruption and devise recommendations to reverse the decline.

In a statement today, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng and Amanah president Mohamad Sabu said the MACC “is the problem”, pointing to instances of political influence in the agency.

On logo issue, PKR opts to shoot itself in the foot
Posted by: superadmin - 01-28-2022, 09:44 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

From Terence Netto

PKR are opting to contest under their own logo going into the Johor polls.

Their coalition partners, DAP and Amanah, are sticking by the Pakatan Harapan logo.

This is wise and contrasts with the PKR decision which is myopic.

The PKR choice prioritises sentiment above long-term strategy and flies in the face of the call for opposition unity by their supremo Anwar Ibrahim.

PKR announced which logo they will use days after Anwar himself had called on all opposition parties to unite under the “Big Tent” concept to face the Johor polls.

The call for unity was sensible, given the crowded field of opposition parties and the necessity to keep a confident Umno-BN from a decisive victory.

Why approve RM2.51 bil in guarantee-free loans to Genting HK? Anwar asks
Posted by: superadmin - 01-27-2022, 06:31 PM - Forum: Business. Economy and Investment - Replies (9)

[Image: 28112020-KUL-anwar_ibrahim_29-SAIRIEN.jpg]

KUALA LUMPUR – Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has taken Finance Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz to task, demanding the latter explain why loans amounting to RM2.51 billion were granted to the now-insolvent Genting Hong Kong (HK).

The PKR president, in a statement, questioned the approval of such large loans from Malayan Banking Bhd, CIMB Group, and RHB Bank Bhd to the embattled Hong Kong-based firm, and why the loans were given without any binding guarantees.

Anwar demanded Tengku Zafrul to come forward to explain the discrepancies, especially considering how national assets like Permodalan Nasional Bhd, Khazanah Nasional Bhd, and the Employees’ Provident Fund happen to be the majority investors in the three banks.

“How were the loans, with no guarantees, given so easily to a gambling company?

“Even though the company is registered in Hong Kong, the owners are Malaysian businessmen who should have, at least, given a personal guarantee or from the reserves within companies owned by them in Malaysia.

“The finance minister is urged to explain how the RM2.51 billion in loans will be honoured by Genting HK, who are now insolvent,” Anwar said in the statement.

We would prefer all to use PH logo, say Mat Sabu, Guan Eng
Posted by: superadmin - 01-27-2022, 02:50 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Pakatan Harapan component parties Amanah and DAP say they would have preferred if all partners used the PH logo for the upcoming Johor elections, after PKR decided it would use its own flag for the polls.

However, Amanah president Mohamad Sabu and DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said they respected their ally’s position.

In a joint statement, they said their parties would continue to use the PH logo to show they were committed to the aspiration of governing as a coalition.

“As a coalition, Amanah and DAP would prefer all PH allies to unite under the same symbol with a common purpose and a shared political agenda,” they said.

“Both Amanah and DAP are of the opinion that political allies and coalition partners stay together in good times and bad times.”

PKR, Amanah to contest 20 seats each, DAP 16 in Johor
Posted by: superadmin - 01-27-2022, 02:46 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: PKR and Amanah will each contest in 20 seats while DAP will contest in 16 seats in the upcoming Johor elections.

Amanah president Mohamad Sabu said the decision on the seat distribution was finalised yesterday.

However, he said, the choice of the candidates was in the final stage of discussions.

“After this, the three parties will discuss again to finalise the distribution with other parties that want to contest with Pakatan Harapan, including Muda, Pejuang and Warisan,” Harian Metro quoted him as saying in Permas Jaya, Johor, today.

Mohamad said Johor PH would make the official announcement when all matters had been finalised.

He said PKR and Amanah would contest in seats with a mixed racial composition, while DAP would focus on the urban areas.

Intel sales hit record US$79 bil on chip demand as shortage lingers
Posted by: superadmin - 01-27-2022, 11:33 AM - Forum: Business, Economy and Investment - No Replies

[Image: 20210308-Semiconductor-Microchip-cpu-Pixabay.jpg]

SAN FRANCISCO – Intel yesterday said 2021 was a record year for sales at the chip maker as it navigated unprecedented demand and supply chain constraints.

The United States-based firm also saw costs rise and margins shrink as it shifted to a more sophisticated line of semiconductors, analysts noted.

“The fourth quarter represented a great finish to a great year,” said Intel chief executive Pat Gelsinger.

Intel revenue for last year tallied US$79 billion (RM332 billion), some US$20.5 billion of which it took in during the final three months, according to its earnings report.

Profit in the quarter was US$4.6 billion, however, in a 21% decrease from the same period a year earlier.

Profit for 2021 totaled $19.9 billion, about 5% less than the net income in the prior year.

Last year was marked by “unprecedented demand tempered by supply chain constraints” that are expected to continue through into next year, Gelsinger said during an earnings call.

A global computer chip shortage has afflicted a broad array of industries from smartphones and laptops to cars and home appliances.

US chip giant Intel finds itself at the heart of this phenomenon, benefiting from heightened demand but facing challenges producing ever more sophisticated semiconductors driving modern devices.

How to win the Malay vote – Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad
Posted by: superadmin - 01-27-2022, 11:23 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: 20220126-Nik_Nazmi-Nik_Nazmi_Facebook_pic.jpg]

HOW can PKR win the Malay vote – said to be a key weakness of ours – especially with the Undi18 reforms kicking in? First, we must understand where the community is at this moment politically.

Today, most Malays realise the flaws and failures of the Ketuanan Melayu and Negara Islam ideologies championed by Umno (as well as Bersatu) and PAS respectively.

They realise that these parties do not pursue radically different policies when in power, as opposed to their rhetoric in opposition.

Today Umno and PAS become mute on issues like the death of Muhammad Adib Mohd Kassim or the Buy Muslim First campaign that raged during the Pakatan Harapan (PH) era. There has been no closure to the Adib case.

The economic problems of the Muslims and Bumiputera remain the same.

The only difference is that where Umno and PAS leaders used to be in opposition, today they are ministers or directors of government-linked companies (GLCs).

The Ketuanan Melayu ideology still operates on the assumption that the Malay people are a poor, rural community.

However, the fact is that today, most Malays live in urban areas. Indeed, Malaysia’s urban population is now majority Bumiputera. The New Economic Policy (NEP) has created a Malay middle-class, although most of the B40s are still Malay and Bumiputera.
