China's Sinovac Covid-19 vaccine found highly effective in real world study
Posted by: superadmin - 05-12-2021, 08:05 PM - Forum: Covid-19 Pandemic - No Replies

JAKARTA (BLOOMBERG) - Sinovac Biotech Ltd's vaccine is wiping out Covid-19 among health workers in Indonesia, an encouraging sign for the dozens of developing countries reliant on the controversial Chinese shot, which performed far worse than Western vaccines in clinical trials.

Indonesia tracked 25,374 health workers in capital city Jakarta for 28 days after they received their second dose and found that the vaccine protected 100 per cent of them from death and 96 per cent from hospitalisation as soon as seven days after, said Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin in an interview on Tuesday (May 11). The workers were tracked until late February.

Mr Sadikin also said that 94 per cent of the workers had been protected against infection - an extraordinary result that goes beyond what was measured in the shot's numerous clinical trials - though it's unclear if the workers were uniformly screened to detect asymptomatic carriers.

"We see a very, very drastic drop," in hospitalisations and deaths among medical workers, Mr Sadikin said.

It's not known what strain of the coronavirus Sinovac's shot worked against in Indonesia, but the country has not flagged any major outbreaks driven by variants of concern.

The data adds to signs out of Brazil that the Sinovac shot is more effective than it proved in the testing phase, which was beset by divergent efficacy rates and questions over data transparency. Results from its biggest Phase 3 trial in Brazil put the shot known as CoronaVac's efficacy at just above 50 per cent, the lowest among all first-generation Covid-19 vaccines.

China and Russia want to vaccinate the developing world before the West

China and Russia want to vaccinate the developing world before the West. It's brought them closer than ever

Hong Kong (CNN)When Russia's Sputnik V vaccine is unloaded in countries around the world, hundreds of millions of doses will come with the label "Made in China."

Chinese companies have made agreements over the past month to manufacture more than 260 million doses of Russia's Sputnik V vaccine, which has been approved for use in more than 60 countries, including a large number of developing nations such as Mexico, India and Argentina.

The deals are symbolic of how China and Russia's international vaccine goals are increasingly aligned, as they assist developing countries neglected by their traditional Western partners who have been accused of hoarding shots.

Duke University research shows that while some countries, such as Canada, the UK and New Zealand, have bought enough vaccines to cover their population more than three times over, the vast majority of countries have barely got doses for half their citizens, including some of the nations worst hit by Covid-19.

Bobo Lo, an expert on China-Russia relations and former deputy head of mission at Australia's embassy in Moscow, said both Moscow and Beijing saw an opportunity for geopolitical gains in the pandemic, winning favor and influence for their autocratic systems.

"It's useful to them to point out that the West is being selfish in limiting the distribution of vaccine to developing countries," he said. "This is a really convenient narrative for both Beijing and Moscow."

WHO says India Covid variant of 'global concern'
Posted by: superadmin - 05-11-2021, 04:07 PM - Forum: Covid-19 Pandemic - No Replies

[Image: _118454568_259d725c-26e3-42bd-b20e-064eb1013e33.jpg]

The World Health Organization (WHO) has classified the coronavirus variant first found in India last year as a "variant of global concern".

It said preliminary studies show the B.1.617 mutation spreads more easily than other variants and requires further study.

The variant has already spread to more than 30 countries, the WHO says.

Three other variants from the UK, South Africa and Brazil have been given the same designation.

A mutation is elevated from a "variant of interest" to a "variant of concern" (VOC) when it shows evidence of fulfilling at least one of several criteria, including easy transmission, more severe illness, reduced neutralisation by antibodies or reduced effectiveness of treatment and vaccines.

China census: Data shows slowest population growth in decades
Posted by: superadmin - 05-11-2021, 04:01 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

China's population grew at its slowest pace in decades, according to government data released on Tuesday.

The average annual growth rate was 0.53% over the past 10 years, down from a rate of 0.57% between 2000 and 2010 - bringing the population to 1.41bn.

The results add pressure on Beijing to boost measures for couples to have more babies and avert a population decline.

The results were announced in a once-a-decade census, which was originally expected to be released in April.

The census was conducted in late 2020 where some seven million census takers had gone door-to-door to collect information from Chinese households.

Given the sheer number of people surveyed, it is considered the most comprehensive resource on China's population, which is important for future planning.

Don’t believe in fake news on vaccines, say senior citizens
Posted by: superadmin - 05-11-2021, 02:12 PM - Forum: Covid-19 Pandemic - No Replies

KANGAR: Senior citizens who have successfully completed the two doses of Covid-19 vaccine under the National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme have urged all Malaysians to stop worrying about getting vaccinated.

Nearly 1,000 senior citizens who received the vaccine at the Dewan 2020 vaccination centre (PPV) yesterday expressed gratitude for not being easily swayed by the fake news that had been shared on social media claiming that the second dose caused complications.

A statement from the communications and multimedia ministry’s quick response team had described the claims as untrue and advised the public not to spread information that could cause confusion and anxiety in the community.

Vaccine recipient Shukor Shamsuddin, 74, from Taman Guru Jaya, here, hoped people would not be affected by negative claims, stressing that the vaccine was safe.

“I wonder why there are still those, especially educated people, who are still afraid to get vaccinated. In fact, there are still many who have yet to register (for vaccination),” he said.

Kinzinger: Cheney 'is being run out for one thing: her consistency'
Posted by: superadmin - 05-11-2021, 11:59 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

Washington (CNN)Republican Rep. Adam Kinzinger on Monday came to the defense of soon-to-be-ousted House GOP conference chair Liz Cheney, arguing their party is poised to remove her from the influential post because she has consistently said former President Donald Trump is responsible for the US Capitol insurrection.

"She is being run out for one thing: her consistency. She said the exact same thing that (House Minority Leader) Kevin McCarthy said on January 6, which is Donald Trump is responsible" for the riot, Kinzinger said at a virtual event hosted by the National Press Club.

"You cannot unite with lies, if somebody is going to use lies to gain power and say, 'let's have unity,' you can't do it," the Illinois Republican added. "'We need to remove Liz Cheney because she makes me have to answer questions that I know are false.' That's what they're saying."

The comments come days before the GOP caucus is expected to remove Cheney, a Wyoming Republican, from her leadership post. New York Rep. Elise Stefanik, a staunch supporter of Trump who has gained the support of both the former president and McCarthy, appears poised to be Cheney's replacement.

Kinzinger, who has drawn stark contrasts with his own party, said at the event that McCarthy and House Republican Whip Steve Scalise "decided that winning the next election was more important than a clear-eyed recognition of what happened on January 6."

MCO pointless if all economic sectors stay open, says MMA
Posted by: superadmin - 05-11-2021, 11:41 AM - Forum: Covid-19 Pandemic - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Medical Association has questioned the government’s move to implement a nationwide movement control order while still allowing all economic sectors to operate.

MMA president Dr Subramaniam Muniandy said the government should have taken a firm stand and implemented a stricter MCO, adding that a better approach would be a strict lockdown for two weeks at most before slowly lifting restrictions.

“I don’t see the purpose of this MCO because you have all economic sectors open which are all over the place, in different locations. I don’t see the logic, it’s even contradictory.

“The virus has already spread everywhere and it will only get worse. I think the general public is also worried. But what the government is doing might be counterproductive for them as well as the people,” he told FMT.

Noting that Putrajaya had to balance between the economy and public health, he maintained that a lockdown was necessary at this point.

Singapore’s foreign minister says Covid won’t go away completely
Posted by: superadmin - 05-10-2021, 05:11 PM - Forum: Covid-19 Pandemic - No Replies

Singapore’s foreign minister says Covid won’t go away completely, warns against complacency
  • Vivian Balakrishnan, Singapore’s minister for foreign affairs, said Covid-19 is “permanent” and subsequent waves of infections will be a normal occurrence in the coming years.
  • The minister also warned that now may be a “more dangerous period” for vaccinated people who may be complacent as well as those who are unvaccinated and lack protection against Covid.
  • When asked whether the Singapore-Hong Kong air travel bubble is on track to begin on May 26, Balakrishnan said: “As of now the plan is yes, but we have to watch how the situation evolves over the next few days.”

SINGAPORE — Covid-19 is “permanent” and subsequent waves of infections will be a normal occurrence in the coming years, Singapore’s Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan told CNBC.

“Covid-19 is endemic in humanity, which means it’s not ever going to go away completely,” Balakrishnan told CNBC’s “Squawk Box Asia” on Monday.

“And the reason it’s not going to go away completely is because it’s been widespread throughout the world, it’s sufficient critical mass, the rate of mutations and new variants will keep going, and the level of human immunity will also wax and wane,” he said.
