KUALA LUMPUR, April 30 — Outgoing Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador today said that he was not informed about Datuk Seri Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani’s appointment as the new IGP until the last minute.
In probably his last press conference as IGP, Abdul Hamid said that he only knew early this morning.
“Acryl only informed me this morning, I only got to know this morning. I think they (Home Ministry and Home Minister Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin) were afraid that there will be potong jalan (cut in and interfere)... someone could have brought in an ‘excavator’ and constructed ‘new roads’,” he said.
Abdul Hamid said he thought that Acryl’s appointment would only be done on Monday.

Hundreds of youths break fast in front of Parliament to demand its reopening, end Emergency
KUALA LUMPUR, April 30 — Hundreads of Malaysian youths have gathered for a sit-in protest, calling for Parliament to immediately reconvene and the end of the state of Emergency, today.
Calling for democracy to prevail, the youths also carried placards with the message “Buka puasa, buka Parlimen” — a play on the Malay word referring to the act of its Muslim participants breaking their fast here this evening, and to reopen the Parliament.
Other placards including those saying “Rakyat Bangkit” (Malay for “People rise up”), “Tamat darurat” (“End the Emergency”), and calling for 18-year-olds to be allowed to vote.
Organised by the Undi18 movement, the group had listed six demands for Putrajaya: to end the state of Emergency and reconvene Parliament, to implement Undi 18 immediately, the enforcement of a just and humane laws, strengthening the rights of Sabah and Sarawak, strengthening a safe education system for all Malaysians and the guarantee of a sustainable economy for the people.

New Delhi (CNN)Flames crackle over the wails and prayers of grieving families as they mourn loved ones laid on funeral pyres that burn through the night in New Delhi.
As India's second wave of coronavirus sweeps through the country, bodies are piling up faster than workers can cremate them or build new pyres.
"Before the pandemic, we used to cremate eight to 10 people (daily)," said Jitender Singh Shunty, head of the Seemapuri crematorium in eastern New Delhi. "Now, we are cremating 100 to 120 a day."
Demand is so high that Seemapuri crematorium has expanded into its parking lot, where dozens of workers construct new cremation platforms from bricks and mortar. There is so little space and so many bodies that families have to get a ticket and wait in line for their turn.

KUALA LUMPUR: Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Abdul Hamid Bador has spoken out against home minister Hamzah Zainudin’s interference in police matters.
This comes hours after Hamzah confirmed that he was the person in a leaked recording of a conversation on the reshuffle of the police force.
“This is what should be avoided. A minister cannot interfere with the management of daily tasks.
“I have already raised this with him (Hamzah). I already raised it with the chief secretary to the government. We have our bosses, we raised it to them but he still wants the power (to interfere). This is not good for the country,” said the outgoing IGP, who will retire on Monday.

KUALA LUMPUR: The country’s top cop says the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) should investigate politicians who have “party hopped”.
“I fight corruption in the force, but in politics I see corruption everywhere. Why can’t they think about it?” said Inspector General of Police Abdul Hamid Bador.
“People drunk on power, willing to buy over others, threaten others. That’s corruption,” he told reporters at an event in Bukit Aman today.
“I want MACC to come in and take action. Don’t be afraid. It’s sickening. Malaysians are sick (of party hopping).”

Cabinet’s ‘deafening silence’ on cabotage policy reflects a failed govt, says Guan Eng
KUALA LUMPUR, April 30 — The Perikatan Nasional (PN) government has failed the test of putting Malaysia’s digital future first by prioritising its own political future, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said.
In a statement today, Lim said he saw this as the government’s way of saving Transport Ministry Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong some face, and in turn, securing MCA’s two-MP support for PN.
“Malaysia’s digital investments of RM12 to RM15 billion are not as important as MCA’s two-MP support, (since it is) critical for the PN government which cannot afford to lose any MPs following the loss of its parliamentary majority,” Lim said.
Lim added that the Cabinet’s failure to meet its own two-week deadline to resolve Wee’s cabotage policy and rescue the nation’s digital future is symbolic of a failed government.

Bersih 2.0: Govt must provide clear date on Undi18, reiterates call for EC chairman’s resignation
KUALA LUMPUR, April 29 — Electoral watchdog Bersih 2.0 today demanded that the government provide a clear date with regards to the implementation of Undi18 and automatic voter registration (AVR) which was unanimously agreed in Parliament in a bipartisan manner in 2019.
Bersih said the remark made by Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan who is the minister in the Prime Minister’s Department handling the law and Parliament portfolio was open to interpretation and failed to inspire confidence on all sides.
It also called into question the conflicting statement made by Takiyuddin and the Election Commission (EC) of the aforementioned initiative’s implementation, further disputing whether EC was still a body independent of the executive.
“The government and the EC must give an explanation as to why only a month ago they claimed Undi18 would not be able to implement yet Takiyuddin’s recent statement states that it will be done at the earliest.
