ATHENS – 'Blade Runner' and 'Chariots of Fire' composer Vangelis, the Oscar-winning electronic music pioneer whose distinctive musical style defined a generation of film soundtracks, has died aged 79, Greece's prime minister said on Thursday.

According to several Greek media outlets, Vangelis died of the coronavirus in France where he lived part-time, as well as in London and Athens.

"Vangelis Papathanassiou is no longer with us," Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis tweeted.

"The world of music has lost the international (artist) Vangelis."

PETALING JAYA: DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang has denied advocating violence in drawing comparisons between Malaysia and Sri Lanka, which was recently plagued by unrest.

This comes after Najib Razak accused the Iskandar Puteri MP of inciting the public by questioning whether Malaysia will suffer the same fate as Sri Lanka, with the former prime minister urging the police to arrest Lim.

KUALA LUMPUR: Lawyer-activist Ambiga Sreenevasan said Malaysia should not be considered a mature democracy due to bad parliamentarians in the Dewan Rakyat.

Speaking at a forum here today, she criticised the MPs, particularly government MPs, who do not read the bills and vote according to the demands of the government instead of using their own judgment.

Controversial lecturer attached to PMO for past 6 months, says source
Posted by: superadmin - 05-19-2022, 07:13 PM - Forum: Politics - Replies (1)

PETALING JAYA: Controversial Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) lecturer Kamarul Zaman Yusoff has been working in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) for the past six months, says a source.

The source told FMT that Kamarul, a political analyst, worked as a special officer to Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob, advising him on policy issues.

The matter came to light after the PMO uploaded a poster today of an event that Kamarul was going to attend. In the poster, the lecturer’s designation was given as “special officer to the prime minister”.

FMT has reached out to the PMO for comment.

Last year, opposition leader Anwar Ibahim urged UUM to launch an investigation into Kamarul for allegedly stoking religious tensions in comments made about DAP MP Steven Sim.

This was related to Sim’s assistance to a Malay youth who was facing some tough times and it was “made an issue” by the academic.

Washington hijacks ‘collective security of EU’ to serve anti-Russia strategy, benefit
Posted by: superadmin - 05-19-2022, 03:13 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

After Finland and Sweden formally submitted letters on Wednesday to join NATO, the new round of expansion of the US-led military alliance is very likely to be further strengthened, however this change will not reinforce the collective security of Europe, but will only benefit the US as Washington can only rebuild its declining hegemony upon keeping other regions intense or by instigating more conflicts, said analysts on Wednesday.

The nature of the Russia-Ukraine conflict is a strategic game between Moscow and Washington, and the fact proves that the conflict has created a new situation that harmed Ukraine, Russia and the rest of Europe, but only benefits the US. Now Washington wants to keep this situation so NATO continues to expand, and the result is that Russia will not compromise and relevant countries will not be more secure but could become the new frontlines that directly face the unpredictable Russia-US confrontation, experts noted.

US President Joe Biden on Thursday will welcome the Prime Minister of Sweden and the President of Finland to the White House in a key show of support days after both countries announced they would seek to join NATO, CNN reported on Tuesday.
