On PAS to uncomplicate things, too soon to shut door on Muafakat: Shahril
Posted by: superadmin - 10-02-2021, 10:07 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR – It may be too soon to speculate or close the door on the Muafakat Nasional cooperation with PAS, said Umno information chief Shahril Hamdan.

He said there may still be hope for MN, and halting it may not be the best move.

Shahril acknowledged that PAS’ Perikatan Nasional membership complicates matters, and said it is up to the Islamist party to uncomplicate the politics of its alliance with Umno.

“Their (PAS) membership in PN complicates any negotiations, but I wouldn’t shut the door yet. In today’s politics, shutting the door entirely isn’t wise,” he told The Vibes.

“It’s also up to PAS to try and make things less complicated. We cannot dictate what other parties do, just as they can’t dictate our decisions.”

Meanwhile, PAS Syura Council member Datuk Mahfodz Mohamed is of the opinion that his party can mediate talks between Umno and Bersatu, given that it has ties to both.

Malaysia edge Indonesia, enter Sudirman Cup semis after 12 years
Posted by: superadmin - 10-02-2021, 09:50 AM - Forum: Badminton - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR: What a joy it was for Malaysia as the young national badminton team checked into the semi-finals of 2021 Sudirman Cup at Vantaa, Finland, after 12 years.

It was hard-earned victory as Malaysia had endured a long battle that lasted almost six hours to subdue their arch-rivals, Indonesia, 3-2, and equalised their best performance in the mixed team championship, they did back in the 2009 edition in Guangzhou, China.

It was also Malaysia’s first success over Indonesia in Sudirman Cup after three encounters since losing in the first meeting in the group stage of the 1999 edition in Copenhagen, Denmark, which saw the neighbouring rivals thrashed the national team 4-1.

Fiery Tokyo Olympics men’s doubles bronze medallists, Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, handed a promising start for Malaysia as they powered past world’s number one, Marcus Fernaldi Gideon-Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo in the first game.

It’s final, Umno will not work with Bersatu in GE15
Posted by: superadmin - 10-02-2021, 09:22 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: ZAHID-HAMIDI-PELANCARAN-PAU-FMT-061219-5.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: Umno’s decision not to work with Bersatu in the next general election is final, its president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said this evening.

His statement comes a day after Perikatan Nasional (PN) said it would be discussing seat allocations without involving Barisan Nasional (BN).

“It wasn’t just a decision by the Supreme Council, but also by the grassroots at the 2020 AGM,” Zahid said in a Facebook post.

Umno, he added, has also decided against forming an alliance with PN in the 15th general election. The PN coalition includes PAS and Gerakan.

Earlier today, Zahid said the party would defend the parliamentary and state seats it won in the last nationwide polls, a decision which he also said was unanimously decided by the Supreme Council last year.

Non-partisan group needed to reset Malaysia, says Musa
Posted by: superadmin - 10-01-2021, 08:22 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: A non-partisan group needs to be set up to handle rules on asset declarations, political financing, the conduct of elections, faulty bureaucracy and corruption in the country, says former deputy prime minister Musa Hitam.

“To me, the only single way to tackle all these issues would be in one go.

“If all of us can get organised to group ourselves, in a non-partisan way and with full dedication, it can be done,” he said during a talk held by Bersih 2.0 on political party finance reform titled Political Finance Reform.

Political financing, he said, would only work if legislative shortcomings, weak oversight and weak bookkeeping were looked into.

He said with the ongoing political uncertainties and realignment of political players, “there is no better time than this for all non-partisan citizens to get together.”

Merck to seek emergency authorization for oral Covid treatment after ‘compelling results’ in trials
  • A phase 3 trial of Merck and Ridgeback Biotherapeutics’ oral antiviral treatment molnupiravir showed it reduced the risk of hospitalization or death by around 50% in Covid-19 patients.
  • Merck plans to seek Emergency Use Authorization in the U.S. and submit marketing applications to other global drug regulators.
  • If authorized by regulatory bodies, molnupiravir could be the first oral antiviral medicine for Covid-19.

Merck and Ridgeback Biotherapeutics plan to seek emergency authorization for their oral antiviral treatment for Covid-19, after the medicine showed “compelling results” in clinical trials.

The drug, molnupiravir, reduced the risk of hospitalization or death by around 50% for patients with mild or moderate cases of Covid-19, the companies announced on Friday. Molnupiravir is administered orally and works by inhibiting the replication of Covid-19 inside the body.

An interim analysis of a phase 3 study found that 7.3% of patients treated with molnupiravir were hospitalized within 29 days. Of the patients who received a placebo, 14.1% were hospitalized or died by day 29. No deaths were reported in patients who were given molnupiravir within the 29-day period, while 8 deaths were reported in placebo-treated patients.

All 775 trial participants had laboratory-confirmed symptomatic Covid-19 and were randomly allocated either molnupiravir or a placebo within five days of the start of their symptoms.

Every participant was unvaccinated and had at least one underlying factor that put them at greater risk of developing a more severe case of the virus. The most common risk factors included obesity, being over the age of 60, diabetes and heart disease.

French ex-officer's DNA ends 35-year murder hunt
Posted by: superadmin - 10-01-2021, 06:04 PM - Forum: International News - No Replies

For decades the crimes of a notorious serial killer have haunted the Paris crime squad.

But now a former military police officer is said to have confessed to being the murderer known as Le Grêlé - the pockmarked man - before his death.

Named locally as François Vérove, his DNA has been matched to several crime scenes linked to Le Grêlé.

His murders and rapes shocked Paris between 1986 and 1994 but until now were never solved.

Among the shocking crimes attributed to him was the murder of 11-year-old Cécile Bloch. She was reported missing after failing to show up to school in Paris in 1986.

"We won't ever know all the crimes Le Grêlé committed," said Didier Saban, a lawyer representing the families.

Vérove is linked to four murders and six rapes but Mr Saban said there were undoubtedly more, and his death had left many families without answers.

Killer's body found in rental flat

A picture of Le Grêlé has hung for decades on the walls of the criminal brigade of the Paris judicial police.

Reps’ transparency with voters on allocation usage important: Musa Hitam
Posted by: superadmin - 10-01-2021, 05:50 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR – MPs today can surely take a leaf from the books of past elected reps such as Tun Musa Hitam, who strove to let voters know how allocations were used amid highly constrained funding.

Recalling his tenure as an MP himself in the 1960s, the 87-year-old said that he constantly reminded the people in his Segamat Utara parliamentary constituency of how he spent from his tight budget.

“I never stopped reminding my constituents that if my explanation (on expenditures) was not acceptable, I would have to get funds from other sources, even illegal contributions to fulfil their demands,” he said.

The former deputy prime minister was speaking during a webinar titled “Political Party Finance Reform Agenda in Malaysia” today, organised by Bersih 2.0 and The Association for Elections and Democracy.

75% of people choose calm over exciting life
Posted by: superadmin - 10-01-2021, 05:47 PM - Forum: Health News - No Replies

[Image: gettyimages_118.0e369140122.original.jpg]

WHEN asked to choose between a quiet life and an exciting life, 75% of people choose the first option, according to a survey conducted across a hundred countries. The authors of the survey believe that experience of living through the pandemic may have played a role in this preference.

"The world prefers a calm life to an exciting life," is the conclusion that came out of a study conducted by the Wellbeing for Planet Earth Foundation (WPE) in partnership with consulting firm Gallup.

During the year 2020, the Japan-based foundation specialising in well-being surveyed people from 116 different countries and territories (at least 1,000 people surveyed for each country). Their findings indicate that 72% of respondents prefer a calm life while 16% prefer an exciting life and 10% chose both.

The country of Georgia proved to be an exception, as the majority of respondents there chose an exciting life over a calm one. The results from Vietnam-based participants showed no clear preference.

Melaka state govt on verge of collapse?
Posted by: superadmin - 10-01-2021, 05:22 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: The Umno-led Melaka state government may be on the verge of collapse.

Speculation is rife that some Barisan Nasional and Bersatu assemblymen may withdraw their support within the next few weeks, leading to a loss of majority by the government of chief minister Sulaiman Md Ali.

The move is said to have come after two months of negotiations between Pakatan Harapan and four state assemblymen from BN and Bersatu.

Melaka has 28 state assemblymen with 17 from the government and 11 from the opposition. Umno has 13 representatives, Bersatu two while there are two independents. The opposition comprises DAP (7), PKR (2) and Amanah (2).
