SINGAPORE – The social media accounts of a number of political leaders and government agencies in Singapore have been spammed by supporters of an Indonesian preacher who was denied entry into Singapore on Monday, CNA reported.

Quoting a Communications and Information Ministry (MCI) spokesman, the online news portal said there were calls for cyberattacks against the Singapore government’s social media accounts on public Indonesian chat groups.

The report said the Instagram accounts of President Halimah Yacob, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, Senior Minister Teo Chee Hean and Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan were among those that were affected, as was Lee’s Twitter account.

The Instagram accounts of the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority and Singapore Tourism Board were also spammed, it said.

Do away with APs for all imports, says DAP MP
Posted by: superadmin - 05-19-2022, 02:25 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: A DAP MP has called on Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob to “be brave” and abolish approved permits (AP) for all imported goods, including motor vehicles.

Stating that the removal of APs for imported food would address escalating prices, Kepong MP Lim Lip Eng questioned why the government decided to only abolish APs for one sector.

“Why only abolish APs for food? The government should get rid of all APs, especially for motor vehicles, as this will also reduce red tape, which leads to corruption and an increase in the cost of imported goods,” said Lim in a statement.

Goldman Sachs cuts its China GDP forecast to 4% on Covid controls
Posted by: superadmin - 05-19-2022, 09:52 AM - Forum: Business, Economy and Investment - No Replies

  • Goldman Sachs analysts have cut their China GDP forecast to 4% from 4.5% after weak data in April.
  • The bank does not expect China will start fully easing Covid controls before the second quarter of 2023.
  • On Monday, Citi — which had one of the highest China GDP forecasts — cut its outlook for growth to 4.2% from 5.1%.

BEIJING — Goldman Sachs analysts on Wednesday cut their forecast for China’s GDP to 4% after data for April showed a slump in growth as Covid-19 controls restricted business activity.

The new forecast is even further below the “around 5.5%” growth target the Chinese government announced for the year in March.

“Given the Q2 Covid-related damage to the economy, we now expect China’s growth to be 4% this year (vs. 4.5% previously),” Hui Shan and a team at Goldman wrote in a report Wednesday. That prediction assumes there will be significant government support, on top of measures to stabilize the property market and control Covid outbreaks.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average posted its biggest loss since 2020 on Wednesday after another major retailer warned of rising cost pressures, confirming investors’ worst fears over rising inflation and rekindling the brutal 2022 sell-off.

The Dow shed 1,164.52 points, or 3.57%, to 31,490.07, the average’s biggest decline since June 2020. It was the lowest close for the Dow since March 2021.

We have ‘stupid ministers’ because smart people avoid politics, says Pua

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia does not have “bright ministers” because smart people tend to avoid politics, says Damansara MP Tony Pua.

“When smart people don’t join politics, who becomes prime minister? Stupid people,” said Pua at a Petaling Jaya DAP fundraiser.

However, he conceded that there were “stupid ministers” in both Pakatan Harapan (PH) and Barisan Nasional (BN) but said that “BN had stupider ministers”.

Country Heights in the dark over ‘unusual’ share price movement

KUALA LUMPUR: Country Heights Holdings Bhd, in response to an unusual market activity (UMA) query issued by Bursa Malaysia, says it is not aware of any reason for the sharp fall in price and rise in volume of its shares today.

The property developer said it was unaware of corporate developments, rumours or reports concerning the group’s business and affairs that might account for the trading activity.

In its stock exchange filing, the company also said it was in compliance with the bourse’s listing requirements, in particular on immediate disclosure obligations.

Earlier today, Bursa Malaysia issued the UMA query, adding: “Investors are advised to take note of the company’s reply to the above UMA query which will be posted at Bursa Malaysia’s website under the company announcements (section) when making their investment decision.”

Investigators believe China Eastern flight disaster was deliberate
Posted by: superadmin - 05-18-2022, 03:04 PM - Forum: International News - No Replies

[Image: Rescue_workers_rest_near_the_crash_site_...FP_pic.jpg]

WASHINGTON – US investigators believe someone on board deliberately crashed a China Eastern flight in March, the Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday, in what was China's deadliest air disaster in decades.

China Eastern flight MU5375 was travelling from Kunming to Guangzhou on March 21 when it inexplicably plunged from an altitude of 29,000 feet into a mountainside, killing all 132 people on board.

So-called black box flight data recorders recovered from the site were sent to the United States for analysis.

That data shows that someone – possibly a pilot or someone who had forced their way into the cockpit – input orders to send the Boeing 737-800 into a nosedive, according to Wall Street Journal, which cited people familiar with the probe.
