Could 4D friction strike a blow on govt and PAS? |

PETALING JAYA: PAS’ simmering discontent over an increase in the number of 4D special draws could be a harbinger of problems within the ruling administration and could well bring friction within the party itself, according to analysts.
It was recently revealed in the Dewan Rakyat that gaming companies had been given permission to hold 22 of these draws on top of the thrice-weekly draws, much to the dismay of PAS leaders like Pasir Mas MP Ahmad Fadhli Shaari and the party’s Perak commissioner, Razman Zakaria.
When Pakatan Harapan was in power, the number of special draws was reduced to eight a year, but this was quietly increased back to 22 after the coalition was ousted from power.
Oh Ei Sun of the Singapore Institute of International Affairs told FMT that even with the government’s memorandum of understanding with the opposition, PAS could still use this as a “trump card” to cancel its allegiance with Umno.
“If Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob is unable to please PAS, which has already looked at times to be on the verge of breaking away, it could go on its own and put an end to Muafakat Nasional,” he said.

TOKYO – Humans can probably live to at least 130, and possibly well beyond, though the chances of reaching such super old age remain vanishingly small, according to new research.
The outer limit of the human lifespan has long been hotly debated, with recent studies making the case we could live up to 150 years, or arguing that there is no maximum theoretical age for humans.
The new research, published Wednesday in the Royal Society Open Science journal, wades into the debate by analysing new data on supercentenarians – people aged 110 or more – and semi-supercentenarians, aged 105 or more.
While the risk of death generally increases throughout our lifetime, the researchers' analysis shows that risk eventually plateaus and remains constant at approximately 50-50.
"Beyond age 110 one can think of living another year as being almost like flipping a fair coin," said Anthony Davison, a professor of statistics at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL), who led the research.

Taliban: an extremist group set to spread its ideology – Andrin Raj |

THE Taliban’s recent takeover has now made the making of a new democratic nation state of Afghanistan just a distant dream for the people of Afghanistan. The fall of Kabul to the Taliban marks a new era in extremism propaganda, not only in the Middle East, but globally for religious terror groups.
The Taliban, prior to the 9/11 attacks was a “state sponsored and support” for Islamist terror groups. Al-Qaeda was supported by the Taliban and were given full autonomy to operate within Afghanistan prior to the 9/11 attacks.
Is the Taliban now seen as a legitimate government to administer Afghanistan by the West? The Taliban supported al-Qaeda and allowed al-Qaeda to conduct a major terrorist attack that killed thousands in New York in 2001, which led to the “war on terror” by the US to attack the Taliban and al-Qaeda operations in Afghanistan.
Al-Qaeda operated and trained the Taliban and foreign fighters that included the early Mujahids that fought the Russian invasion.
Al-Qaeda’s autonomy given by the Taliban to operate and plan international terrorist attacks from Afghanistan has now been reactivated. The Taliban is portraying something that it is not and will not be in the near future. It will not change its extremist ideologies and violent practices of shariah laws.
Taliban leaders are now engaging a new narrative that it wants to portray to Muslim authoritarian regimes, as well as to Muslim states that are seen to be in line with radical Islamic teachings and ideologies.
The Taliban has also initiated its first contact in Southeast Asia, which is Malaysia, as it has support given by a political religious party in Malaysia, which has welcomed the Taliban rule.
The Taliban’s newly appointed media communications head, Abdul Qahar Balkhi, is well educated and speaks fluent English, and is given the mandate to speak on behalf of the Taliban to the international media.
Now, the Taliban is definitely reaching out to every country for it to be recognised.

Don’t breach Constitution by banning transgender Muslims from entering mosques, religious authorities told
KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 29 — Banning transgender persons from entering mosques impedes on their rights and personal liberties as enshrined under the Federal Constitution, said women’s rights group Sisters in Islam (SIS).
In a statement today, SIS also stated that the ruling by the Perlis state religious authorities to ban transgender persons or “mukhannats” from entering mosques along with several other state religious authorities to emulate such decisions, is not justified as there is no appropriate context within Islamic teachings for such actions.
“There is no evidence from the Quran and Hadith that forbids a mukhannats from entering the mosque,” it said, referring to the Islamic scriptures.
“Therefore, the fatwa and statement of the mufti not only contradicts the Federal Constitution but in fact not in accordance with inclusive Islamic traditions.”

- Honor notched a 15% market share in China in August, making it the third-largest smartphone player in the country — the first time it has held that position in a year, Counterpoint Research said.
- In November, Huawei spun off Honor to ensure the brand’s survival because U.S. sanctions on the Chinese technology giant cut off supplies to key components and crippled its smartphone business.
- In international markets, Honor will face stiff competition from the likes of Apple and Samsung as well as Xiaomi, which as continued to steal the market share lost by Huawei.
GUANGZHOU, China — Honor, the smartphone brand Huawei spun off last year, is beginning to regain share in China’s fiercely competitive mobile phone market.
Honor notched a 15% market share in China in August, making it the third-largest smartphone player in the country — the first time it has held that position in a year, Counterpoint Research said in a report on Wednesday.
The smartphone company trails domestic rivals Oppo and Vivo. Sales of Honor devices rose 18% in August compared to July, making it one of the fastest growing brands in China.
In November, Huawei sold its budget brand Honor to a consortium of buyers including the government of Shenzhen, the city where its headquarters is located.
Huawei did that to ensure Honor survived because U.S. sanctions on the Chinese technology giant cut off supplies to key components and crippled its smartphone business, which included Honor at that time. Selling it off allowed Honor to get access to the key components like semiconductors again.

KUALA LUMPUR: Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman (Independent-Muar) has urged Putrajaya to look into approving hemp and medical marijuana farming here in Malaysia, pointing to its economic and health benefits.
The former youth and sports minister told the Dewan Rakyat today that the current hemp and medical marijuana market was worth RM60 billion and was expected to breach the RM400 billion mark in four years’ time.
“I don’t want Malaysia to be left behind on the matter just because the issue is sensitive, when studies based on data and science have shown that industries like alcoholic drinks and cigarettes are more dangerous,” he said.
He added that this was not a new issue as the Pakatan Harapan government had conducted studies and discussions on the matter, based on scientific facts.

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 29 — Pengerang MP Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said today chastised the government over its bid to appeal against the High Court decision granting automatic citizenship to children born abroad to Malaysian mothers with foreign spouses.
In her speech debating the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP), the former de facto law and parliamentary affairs minister questioned why such Malaysian mothers were treated differently from Malaysian fathers with foreign spouses.
She added that she was perplexed by the government’s move to appeal the ruling.
“Be fair to all. If the mother cannot get it, don’t give it to the fathers either. Why is it that the mothers are denied (the automatic citizenship right for their children) while it is okay for the fathers?\

KUALA LUMPUR: Pontian MP Ahmad Maslan has been acquitted by the High Court on charges of money laundering and giving false statements to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).
Bernama reported that the Umno secretary-general was freed of the charges this morning after paying a RM1.1 million compound.
He previously claimed trial to charges of failing to declare some RM2 million he received from Najib Razak to the Inland Revenue Board (LHDN).
Ahmad was alleged to have violated Section 113(1)(a) of the Income Tax Act 1967 by not stating his real income on the RM2 million he received from the former prime minister in the income tax return form for assessment year 2013.
He was alleged to have received the money, believed to be proceeds of illegal activities, through a cheque from AmIslamic Bank Berhad dated Nov 27, 2013, which he personally cashed the same day.
The charge, framed under Section 4(1)(a) of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds Act 2001, provides for a maximum fine of RM5 million, or imprisonment for up to five years, or both, if found guilty.

PETALING JAYA: The government has been urged to go beyond its focus on raising Bumiputera equity ownership, and look at improving Bumiputera participation in the economy as a whole.
Equity ownership alone is not a true measure of economic success, said economist Barjoyai Bardai of Universiti Tun Abdul Razak.
He said: “Do not be carried away with the 30% target or on the numbers but focus on a bigger objective, which is the participation of all Bumiputeras in the economic sectors.”
He also believed it would be hard for Malaysia to enjoy significant economic growth if it remained with the same economic plan. “The time has come for the government to come up with a new model plan based on the current paradigm.”
He said only the first three of Malaysia’s five-year plans could be considered successful, those for the period between 1966 and 1980.

KUALA LUMPUR: Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim has denied that he sexually assaulted his former research assistant at his private residence in Segambut three years ago.
The PKR president dismissed Muhammed Yusoff Rawther’s contention that he came to meet him at his residence at about 3pm on Oct 2, 2018, when the alleged incident took place.
“DSAI (Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim) did not meet Yusoff at his residence (on Oct 2, 2018) as alleged,” said the statement of defence filed yesterday sighted by FMT.
Instead, Anwar said, he was entertaining his family and friends between 2pm and 6pm that day.
He said Yusoff’s statement was “utterly false and fabricated”.
Anwar has also filed a counterclaim that Yusoff manufactured evidence in connivance with persons currently unknown to tarnish his political image.
This, he said, was done to first prevent him from becoming the prime minister, taking over the reign from Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
“The allegations were aimed at smearing his political reputation ahead of the 14th PKR national congress and impending transitional process of the country’s premiership from Mahathir,” added the statement in the counterclaim filed by Messrs Jeffrey Lee.
