Niu Yu, 24, stole the limelight at the Shanghai Fashion Week for her confidence while striding down the runway with a prosthetic right leg.
Niu completed her first walk down the catwalk recently and the video clip of her catwalk appearance quickly became one of the hottest topics on Weibo, a Chinese Twitter-like social media platform, on Oct. 20.
She received many compliments for her courage. “She is so cool and so pretty,” commented a Weibo user. “The most beautiful woman is one who lives with confidence in herself,” another Weibo user praised.
"I didn’t know how to walk down the catwalk. I didn’t even know how to move my hands on the stage. But I felt that I was pretty cool when I took the stage,” Niu replied in a short video posted after the fashion week ended.
Niu noted that she was not alone on the stage, recalling an encouraging message she received from a 19-year-old girl with a disability last year. The girl, who also had a limb removed, said she has always dreamed of walking down the runway just like all the other famous models overseas who also face similar situations of physical impairment. “Although we are not perfect, we are still beautiful,” the girl said, wishing her day would come sooner.

Violence on minorities and Bangladesh’s onerous return to secularism – Nayanima Basu |

THE latest episode of communal violence against Hindus in Bangladesh has led to calls that the Muslim-majority country return to the 1972 constitution that envisaged the nation as secular.
However, the Sheikh Hasina government believes it will be an “onerous task” to amend the constitution and remove Islam as state religion, sources in the Bangladesh government told ThePrint.
This is despite the fact that Dhaka knows it is important to uphold secular values as Bangladesh stares at unprecedented economic growth.
The move to amend the constitution on such a sensitive topic, the sources said, will give rise to more violence and disrupt the government’s plans to steer the country to growth and development.
Islam was made the state religion of Bangladesh in 1988, when the country was under the rule of the erstwhile military dictator Hussein Muhammad Ershad. His predecessor Ziaur Rahman, another military ruler, is believed to have set in motion the process of Bangladesh’s Islamisation.
However, secularism remains one of the four basic pillars of their constitution as laid out in the preamble, along with nationalism, socialism, and democracy.
There have been several reports of violence against the nation’s Hindu minority in Bangladesh.
The latest came amid Durga Puja celebrations, with the violence starting on October 13 and continuing in the days afterwards.
Several puja pavilions were vandalised, villages torched, and temples desecrated by religious fundamentalists in a country where over 90% of the population is Muslim.

KEPALA BATAS – Another reclamation project in Penang is facing tough criticism as state opposition chief Datuk Muhamad Yusoff Mohd Noor submitted a memorandum of protest to the state Environment Department (DoE) against the 407ha sea reclamation project in Seberang Prai Utara.
Yusoff said the protest was submitted after his party examined the executive summary of the environmental impact assessment (EIA) report, as well as discussions with locals.
“Tasek Gelugor Umno has 86 branches with 20,071 members. We think this project should be cancelled because it has a serious impact on the socio-economy and the environment,” he told reporters today.

PETALING JAYA: Election watchdog Bersih 2.0 has urged political parties in the Melaka state election on Nov 20 to pledge that they will not accept “frogs” after the polls.
“There is a chance that this will be a close election, with the winner having a small advantage in terms of seats. We do not want any party hopping to take place after the election.
“We call on all contesting parties to make a cross-party pledge that they will not take in frogs after the election,” said Bersih 2.0 chairman Thomas Fann in a virtual press conference today.
Bersih 2.0 also issued a five-point challenge to all contesting parties, including reforms that need to be implemented in Melaka to guarantee political stability and discourage party hopping.
It called for enactments to control party hopping to ensure political accountability and allow recall elections to be held in the state.

Islamic State in Afghanistan could have capacity to strike US next year |

The US intelligence community has assessed that Islamic State in Afghanistan could have the capability of attacking the United States in as little as six months – and has the intention to do so, a senior Pentagon official has told Congress.
“The intelligence community currently assesses that both Isis-K [Islamic State Khorasan Province, the Afghanistan-based group] and al-Qaida have the intent to conduct external operations, including against the United States, but neither currently has the capability to do so. We could see Isis-K generate that capability in somewhere between six or 12 months,” said Colin Kahl, under secretary of defense for policy.
The remarks are the latest reminder that Afghanistan could still pose serious national security concerns for the US even after it ended its two-decade war in defeat in August.

KUALA LUMPUR – Fresh from settling her million-ringgit debt to a Paris-based film production company earlier this year, women development minister Datuk Seri Rina Harun is now being sued by a former “good friend”.
Plaintiff Ida Rahayu Md Noor is demanding RM130,000 cash, a 5% interest on the amount for every year the sum is not settled, legal cost, and any further relief deemed appropriate by the court.
This is after Ida Rahayu accused the women, family and community development minister for failing to repay her debt of the same amount that was borrowed over 12 years ago.
In her statement of claim filed at the Shah Alam Sessions Court on August 30, Ida Rahayu claimed that in May 2009, Rina had sought a personal loan amounting to RM130,000 as part of her advance payment to purchase a JM Bariani House Alamanda business franchise from Secret Heritage Sdn Bhd.
The outlet is addressed at Alamanda Putrajaya Shopping Centre.

34 years after Ops Lalang, still no sincere apology by Dr M |

From Kua Kia Soong
Operation Lalang was Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s worst abuse of power during his 23-year rule when he arrested and detained more than a hundred innocent Malaysians without trial under the infamous Internal Security Act (ISA) in 1987.
It happened to be his most desperate attempt at clinging to power.
It was a time during his term when he was faced with the biggest threat to his rule, with Team B under Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah challenging the results of the Umno elections. A court decision in Team B’s favour would have meant the end of Mahathir’s grasp on power.
