PETALING JAYA: Saying the end does not justify the means, the DAP rejected any move to allow the four Melaka assemblymen involved in toppling the state government from being nominated as candidates under Pakatan Harapan (PH) in the Melaka state election.
DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said they had doubts over the commitment of the four assemblymen towards genuine political reform and that the party was unhappy with PH’s move to consider two of the four for nomination as candidates.
However, he hinted that ultimately coalition unity would triumph.
“At a meeting last night, the DAP central executive committee (CEC) unanimously resolved to reject all four Melaka assemblymen, who had earlier withdrawn support for then Melaka chief minister Sulaiman Md Ali, to be nominated as PH candidates for the coming state election.

The US should stop all scapegoating and blame-shifting moves and focus instead on domestic efforts and global cooperation in fighting COVID-19, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson said Sunday in response to the so-called declassified assessment on COVID-19 origins released by the US intelligence agency.
The US should stop political manipulation and create conducive conditions for scientists all over the world to conduct origins-tracing cooperation. It should stop attacking and smearing China and respond to the legitimate concerns of the international community. It should receive World Health Organization experts and open up its biological labs at Fort Detrick and biological experiment bases for investigation, read the remarks made by Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Wang Wenbin on Sunday.
Political manipulation and intelligence-led origins-tracing in disregard of international justice will only further undermine the general atmosphere for science-based global cooperation in origins-tracing, hamper international cooperation in combating COVID-19, and cost more lives, Wang stressed.

Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Sunday on the sidelines of the G20 leaders summit in Rome, Italy, the first face-to-face meeting between the top diplomats of the two countries after Blinken made a provocative statement challenging China's sovereignty on the Taiwan question, saying the US will support the island's secessionist authorities "robust" participation in the UN system.
According to the videos released by Yuyuan Tantian, a social media account affiliated with China's state broadcaster CCTV, Blinken and US delegates arrived at the residence of the Chinese delegation, entering via a side door. The meeting lasted for about 50 minutes. Wang and Blinken took photos together after the courtesy greetings, but did not shake hands or have a COVID-safe elbow bump, media reported.
Chinese analysts said these details show the atmosphere of the meeting was as tense as China-US relations, and although it will not ease the situation, keeping communication open will at least help the two sides avoid conflicts and manage their differences. On the US' constant provocations on the Taiwan question, Washington should take note of the gravity of the situation if China decides to retaliate, since the US has already provided excuses for China to activate the Anti-secessionism Law, experts suggest.

KUALA LUMPUR – Thousands of elite Malays are purportedly gambling at gaming outlets across the country without consequence, opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim (Port Dickson-PH) charged in Parliament today.
He also alleged that these individuals are being lured to join as club members by rich towkays, and has taken the government to task for turning a blind eye.
Debating Budget 2022, Anwar said based on information obtained from police reports and media statements, he understood that there has been an increase in gaming clubs in the country, with 62 supposedly in operation.
He said what is more concerning is the outlets have huge numbers of Malay-Muslim members.

KUALA LUMPUR: The government needs to explain the actual cost of the 5G telecommunications service as the cost seems to keep going up, opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim said.
He said the figures quoted range from RM11 billion to RM15 billion and even RM28 billion and asked for clarity as it will be the rakyat who will have to pay the bill.
“We need to know why a company is chosen. And why is the cost going up?
“The rakyat are suffering, people are without jobs, schools without facilities and there are not enough laptops but we want to spend billions (on 5G),” he said while debating the 2022 Supply Bill in the Dewan Rakyat.
Anwar said the tender process should have been transparent and people must know “which company has been given the tender and which agent or VIP is involved”.

PUTRAJAYA: A subsidiary of Hong Seng Consolidated Bhd will invest RM3 billion in Kedah Rubber City (KRC) to build the world’s largest glove factory starting next year.
The factory is expected to create over 1,600 jobs especially for residents around Padang Terap, Kedah, said Hong Seng Group managing director Teoh Hai Hin.
It will also be a catalyst for economic recovery for those affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, he said at a press conference after the symbolic groundbreaking ceremony for the nitrile butadiene latex (NBL) manufacturing plant here today.
Teoh said the plant was expected to attract additional investment of RM5 billion through the support industry and the nitrile rubber industry value chain.
He said the plant was expected to be completed in 2024 with a full production capacity of 960 kilotonnes of gloves a year.

GEORGE TOWN – This month alone saw three deaths at high-rise buildings in Penang, two involving suicides and one an accident.
Rather than sweeping these incidents under the carpet, experts are weighing in on them, prompting high-rise building management and operators of the two Penang Bridges to exhibit helpline numbers at strategic locations around their facilities.
“The numbers may prompt those suffering from depression to think twice before they attempt to end their lives,” Sneham Malaysia president Datuk Florence Sinniah said.
Florence told The Vibes that operators of such places where suicides generally occur should help the authorities “control access to the means”.
“We cannot totally prevent unfortunate deaths, but we can at least step up the efforts to remind those suffering from depression that help is always available.”

MELAKA: Former Bukit Katil assemblyman Adly Zahari is the best man to lead Melaka, according to state PKR chief Halim Bachik, who cited the former chief minister’s performance during his 22 months leading the state.
In an interview with FMT, Halim said Adly performed very well during his short-lived tenure, adding that the Amanah vice-president was well-supported both in his Pakatan Harapan administration and at the grassroots level.
“In essence, we do feel that Adly is the best man for the job,” he said, though he maintained that PH’s choice of chief minister would be finalised later by the coalition’s top leaders.
“We need to take over the state government first at the state polls before we make a decision, and the decision will be made by the central leadership, not at the state level.”

PETALING JAYA: The 2022 budget was a missed “golden opportunity” to make real changes, noted economist Jomo Kwame Sundaram told a public forum today, while an MP said budget proposals should come under greater parliamentary scrutiny.
Jomo, a noted economist and former government adviser, said the missed opportunity was “something quite sad”.
The 2022 budget, being a pre-election budget, was the perfect time for finance minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz, who is not an MP, to reduce the political elements in government budgets, he said.

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 31 — The Covid-related withdrawals over the past two years have had a massive impact on the savings of Employees Provident Fund (EPF) contributors, as currently, only three per cent of contributors can afford their retirement.
EPF chief strategy officer Nurhisham Hussein said the Covid-related withdrawals, namely i-Sinar, i-Lestari and i-Citra, resulted in many members below age 55 having critically low EPF savings.
“Even with Covid-19, 80 per cent of Malaysian men and 90 per cent of Malaysian women will reach age 60, while one out of three men and two out of three women will reach age 80.
“We now estimate that only three per cent of Malaysians can afford to retire,” he said at the Perdana Fellow Alumni Association Speaker Series webinar today.
Nurhisham was one of the panellists at the webinar, titled ‘Healthcare in Focus’.
In his presentation, Nurhisham said by the end of this year, 54 per cent of EPF members aged 54 would have less than RM50,000 in their savings account, noting that a majority of those who withdrew their entire EPF savings upon reaching age 55 would use it up within two to three years.
He noted that the withdrawals were allowed due to the extraordinary circumstances.
