KUALA LUMPUR – The criticism levelled against Special Envoy of the Prime Minister to the Middle East Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang by Amanah deputy president Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub is “shallow and superficial”, said Sik MP Ahmad Tarmizi Sulaiman.
Harakah Daily reported Tarmizi as saying that Salahuddin is being “weird” and has allowed his perception of Muslim interests to be influenced by DAP sentiments.
He added that Salahuddin, a former PAS leader who had left the party in 2015, has bought into Western narratives that appear to be uneasy with Afghanistan’s recovery.
This follows Salahuddin’s questioning of the recent meeting between Hadi and representatives of the Taliban, particularly Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan spokesman Suhail Shaheen.
The meeting, which was held during Hadi’s work trip to Doha, focused on expressing the nation’s readiness to work together with Qatar to rebuild Afghanistan.

In Johor, more than 300 Tanjung Piai Bersatu members quit in growing discontent with leadership
PONTIAN, Feb 7 — Following growing discontent within Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) Johor divisions, the Tanjung Piai division became the biggest casualty after more than 300 members officially defected to Parti Warisan (Warisan) here last night.
Many of the former members, including key office bearers such as committee members as well as polling district centre (PDM) heads, have thrown the division on the brink of collapse.
The mass defection from Bersatu to Warisan was led by the division’s former secretary Hishamuddin Busri, treasurer Mohd Rashid Alfred Abdul Rahman Heinrich and other ex-division leaders.
This latest incident involving Bersatu is reported to be the fourth after the entire Desa Harmoni branch under the Pasir Gudang division defected to Umno late Saturday night.

Johor polls: Muhyiddin not standing for re-election in Gambir a blessing in disguise for Bersatu, say analysts
KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 7 — Should Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin decide to not defend his Gambir seat at the upcoming Johor state elections, it could prove to be a blessing in disguise for both him and his party, political analysts said.
By not contesting, Muhyiddin would be prolonging the lifeline of his party and his political career, said Universiti Malaysia associate professor Awang Azman Awang Pawi.
“Muhyiddin is not standing because he likely knows that he won his seat in Gambir (during the 14th general election) due to the support of Chinese constituents.

How to curb graft in Malaysia’s notorious defence procurement |

From A Hashim
Last week, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) found fresh leads in its investigation of the littoral combat ships (LCS) project, leading to the arrest of three individuals. While it is too soon to determine what went wrong, there is little doubt about what needs to be done in the future.
To recap, the procurement contract for LCS was awarded to Boustead Naval Shipyard Sdn Bhd (BNS) in 2011. Despite a whopping payment of RM6 billion since then, none of the ships have been delivered on schedule. KD Maharaja Lela, the first of six ships ordered by the government, was scheduled for delivery in 2019, and yet, all there is to show now is an empty husk languishing in Lumut.
These developments are not surprising given that Malaysia’s defence procurements have consistently been plagued by controversies, delayed deliveries, and ballooning costs. In the maritime sphere, a perfect example would be the procurement of Kedah-class offshore patrol vessels (OPV), a project which was ironically rescued by BNS’ parent company, Boustead Heavy Industries Corporation (BHIC).

SHAH ALAM: PKR president Anwar Ibrahim says Muda wants to contest 10 seats in the upcoming Johor state elections.
He said Muda had been told to send in a list of candidates before discussions could take place.
Speaking after attending an appreciation ceremony for Selangor flood volunteers today, the opposition leader said nothing could be confirmed until further discussions took place.
Muda president Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman had confirmed last week that his party would contest in the Johor polls after seemingly being left out of seat negotiations by Pakatan Harapan (PH).
It has yet to be determined if Muda will contest under PH, but discussions are said to be ongoing.
