Mahathir’s Pejuang facing a wipeout at Johor polls |

PETALING JAYA: Two analysts predict that Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s new Pejuang party will be wiped out at the Johor state elections, especially if the party contests 42 seats on their own.
Oh Ei Sun of the Singapore Institute of International Affairs said Pejuang would be lucky to win even one of the 56 state assembly seats.
Although Mahathir, the Pejuang chairman, remained an appealing figure to many voters, the party lacked grassroots machinery, Oh said.
“Ultimately, Umno, with its gargantuan mobilisation of grassroots, would almost certainly win by default in most Malay-majority constituencies, followed by a big distance by PAS. Pakatan Harapan and Bersatu would count themselves lucky if they could win at most half of what they did in 2018,” he added.

The Pakistani-Afghan border, running along Britain’s colonial-era Durand Line, is a centre of the increasing tensions between Islamabad and the Taliban, with a rise in attacks since the group came to power in Kabul.
Five Pakistani soldiers were killed on Sunday at a north-western border post in Khurram district by militants inside Afghanistan in an attack claimed by the Pakistani Taliban, Tehreek-e-Taliban-Pakistan (TTP).
After a ceasefire between the group and the Pakistani government collapsed within weeks, the Pakistani foreign minister, Shah Mahmood Qureshi, said Islamabad had told the Afghan Taliban leadership it considered TTP as a test case of its ability to control militants.

Name and shame corrupt politicians in school textbooks: Khairil Nizam |

KUALA LUMPUR – The names of corrupt politicians and the tales of their crimes should be published in school textbooks as a lesson for all, proposed a PAS leader.
Party information chief Khairil Nizam Khirudin said it frightens him seeing leaders getting involved in politics merely to make easy money, and that sharing these stories in schools could serve as a lesson to students from an early age.
The Dewan Negara senator recalled speaking at an anti-graft forum where he was the only member of a political party who took up the invitation, and where he first mooted the idea.
“The (moderator) had said that I was brave to accept the invitation (to attend an anti-corruption forum). I said: why should I be afraid when I am not involved in graft?
“This (question arose) because many people believe politicians like bribes,” he said in a podcast on HarakahTV.

Is Azmin’s political career coming to a grinding halt? |

KUALA LUMPUR – Once touted as the next future deputy prime minister, Bersatu supreme council member Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali may see his political career come to a standstill.
Following his attempts to set up a new political party called Parti Negara Malaysia (PNM) last year, sources revealed that the Gombak MP is now purportedly pondering his political future.
Attempts to set up PNM failed to materialise following issues pertaining to its registration with the Registrar of Societies.
“Azmin has since reignited negotiations with a dormant political party. He plans to use this as a bargaining tool and has even threatened to pull out all PKR MPs from Bersatu if the DPM position is not given to him,” said a source familiar with the matter.
It is learnt that the international trade and industry minister insists that the DPM position remains his as apparently promised to him by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob and Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin when he was the prime minister.

Hard to tell who young voters will root for in Johor polls, analyst says |

PETALING JAYA: An analyst has said it is difficult to predict who young voters will be supporting in the upcoming Johor elections.
The polls, which must be held by March 23, will be the first to have 18-year-olds as voters, following the successful implementation of Undi18.
Awang Azman Pawi of Universiti Malaya said the presence of the young voters, and others voting for the first time, would pose a challenge not only for Umno, but the other parties as well, as it would be hard to predict their mood.
He told FMT the competing parties needed to set up their efforts to woo the first-time voters, and allowing teachers to be actively involved in politics could boost Umno’s chances of a resounding victory.

Farhash disrupting party harmony, says Selangor PKR leader |

PETALING JAYA: Perak PKR chief Farhash Wafa Salvador Rizal Mubarak has been accused of disrupting the party’s harmony by moving to challenge Selangor menteri besar Amirudin Shari for the Gombak division chief’s post.
Selangor PKR deputy communications director Zainol Abidin Mohamed said Farhash needed to continue focusing on Perak instead in view of the next general election (GE15) since Pakatan Harapan could potentially form the next state government.
He urged Farhash, the former political secretary to PKR president Anwar Ibrahim, to withdraw his decision to vie for the post.
“Leaving Perak and shifting to Selangor is akin to a father leaving his children when they need his attention and guidance,” Zainol, the Gombak PKR treasurer, told FMT.
Farhash confirmed on Monday that he wanted to go up against Amirudin for the division post and that he planned to contest against Gombak MP Azmin Ali and Gombak Setia assemblyman Hilman Idham in GE15 if they were to defend their seats.

People with high blood pressure who take paracetamol on prescription could be increasing their risk of heart attacks and strokes, a study suggests.
Doctors should think about the risks and benefits to patients taking it over many months, the University of Edinburgh researchers say.
Taking the painkiller for headaches and fevers is safe, they stress.
Other experts say research in more people over a longer timeframe is needed to confirm the findings.
