PETALING JAYA: Muda information chief Luqman Long has apologised after the party’s Kedah chapter implied in a Facebook post late last night that Pakatan Harapan, PKR and other coalitions are corrupt.
Luqman said this post was clearly made to cause a misunderstanding among the public, adding that it did not adhere to any of Muda’s principles.

GEORGE TOWN: The offer by DAP and Amanah to Muda to contest six seats in the Johor elections may sway urban voters to “return” to the opposition, an analyst said.
It comes at a time when these voters have grown unhappy with Pakatan Harapan (PH), said Azizuddin Sani of Universiti Utara Malaysia.
Azizuddin, who has just completed a three-day study of the political situation in Johor, told FMT: “The urban voters, who were previously PH supporters, have had a change of heart. They are not happy with PH anymore.
“The PH branding is poor after a 22-month stint in Putrajaya. Many are unhappy with its performance. As you can see, even PKR is choosing to go under its own banner instead of PH’s.”

KUALA LUMPUR – Youth-led Muda says PKR has yet to finalise the offer to make way for it to contest in another three Johor state seats, despite the state party chief’s announcement earlier tonight.
In a statement, Muda’s politburo said the three seats involved were not won or contested by PKR in the 2018 election.
It added that although it respected PKR’s right to defend its existing seats, the party has yet to confirm its decision on the three seats requested by Muda during a series of negotiations with Pakatan Harapan (PH) component parties.
“Muda is confident and believes that in the spirit of togetherness and for the sake of the people of Johor, an honest and transparent negotiation must be held.
“Muda proposes that all details of the negotiations be kept confidential before they are announced to the media in the spirit of mutual transparency.”
In a statement earlier, Johor PKR chief Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh said the party offered three state seats to Muda ahead of the March polls, following the cemented offers made by PH component parties DAP and Amanah.
“During the series of negotiations, everyone gave their opinions honestly and openly.
“After the negotiations, PKR is offering Muda three seats and now awaits the youth party’s response.”
PKR’s announcement means that the newly registered Muda will be contesting nine out of 56 seats in Johor if it accepts the offer.
This, however, falls short of one seat touted by PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who said Muda sought 10 state seats – one that Muda president Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman had denied.
Earlier today, in a joint statement by DAP, Amanah and Muda said the young party would run for six seats.
The seats allocated for Muda are Tenang, Bukit Kepong, Parit Raja, Machap, Puteri Wangsa and Bukit Permai. – The Vibes, February 9, 2022

KUALA LUMPUR – If speculations are to be believed, special functions minister Datuk Abdul Latiff Ahmad appears to be among those being considered by Bersatu as a Johor menteri besar candidate.
While a final decision on candidates has yet to be made, sources told The Vibes that Latiff has been proposed as one of his party’s choices for the state’s top post should it secure a victory in next month’s election.
The Mersing MP is tipped to contest in the Tenggaroh state seat – a Barisan Nasional (BN) stronghold – which is one of the two seats under his parliamentary constituency.
Presently, Tenggaroh is held by two-term assemblyman and MIC Youth chief Raven Kumar Krishnasamyi.
Perikatan Nasional (PN), the coalition led by Bersatu, will be announcing its list of candidates for the Johor polls tomorrow, following talks on seat distribution with component parties PAS and Gerakan.
However, Latiff has kept mum when asked about the talks.

Boost or lose privileges: is KJ’s third dose ultimatum legal? |

KUALA LUMPUR – Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin’s recent warning to Sinovac recipients and senior citizens to get their Covid-19 booster doses or risk privileges being revoked has triggered questions of its legality and even criticism from society.
The point of contention surrounding the seemingly arbitrary regulation concerns the absence of a constitutional provision mandating any form of vaccines, and claims that the revocation of fully vaccinated privileges is equal to the deprivation of one’s fundamental rights.
Among those more vocal about the recent warning is Federation of Malaysian Consumer Associations (Fomca) president Datuk N. Marimuthu, who told The Vibes he views Khairy’s directive towards the affected groups as an outright threat to heed the ministry’s instructions.
Marimuthu said Khairy has failed to provide proper justification to compel Sinovac recipients and senior citizens to get their booster shots, arguing that the requirement for a third – or even fourth dose – would depend on a person’s economical and living situation.

PETALING JAYA: A women’s rights group has pointed to the possibility that the recent stabbing death of a newborn in Kemaman might not have happened if attitudes towards pregnant teenagers were less harsh.
The stigma of shame attached to teenage pregnancy might have caused the young mother to kill her baby, said Sisters in Islam (SIS) communications officer Aleza Othman

When have we Malaysians ever really been free? |

Of late, there have been many protests around the world by those who reject the new controls and restrictions being imposed in the face of the continuing onslaught of the coronavirus.
Central to their argument, is the notion of freedom. They scream and protest “…give us our freedoms back, we will not be enslaved”.
Equally vociferous, on the opposite side, are those who advocate mandated booster shots, continued controls, and restrictions. They want to name and shame those who resist inoculations and incarcerate those who don’t follow the regulations.
Their argument is also about freedom, “…control and sort this mess out, so that we can be free again”.
Both sides of the divide claim the moral high ground for freedom.
But were we ever “free”?
I see myself as a fairly even-minded person. I have always told myself that I am the master of my own destiny, and that I will act on my convictions.

KUALA LUMPUR: Though judges must remain apolitical, when it comes to interpreting the Federal Constitution, they must also have regard to the political and social context in which it was drafted, Chief Justice Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat said.
This is because judicial decisions were subject to public confidence in the judiciary, she added.

Umno’s embrace of non-Malays had better not be an election ploy |

The political intrigues of the “Sheraton Move” that brought down Pakatan Harapan in 2020 has also cast a pall on the optimism shared by many Malaysians that the nation will, one day, provide fair and equal opportunities for all irrespective of ethnicity.
The downfall of Pakatan Harapan led to Perikatan Nasional taking over with an almost completely Malay-Muslim government. Of course, Umno gave its shoulders to lift up PN and nudge out PH.
The party openly claimed that PH had at least eight non-Muslim Cabinet ministers, which Umno claimed was not good for national unity. Ironically, this happened in the year 2020, the year when Mahathir Mohamad’s vision of a mature Bangsa Malaysia society, with minimal reference to racial origins, was supposed to flower.
We are still fighting hard to regain our position as a nation that is fair to all.
