PETALING JAYA: DAP’s Tony Pua has slammed a top Chinese school for inviting former prime minister Najib Razak to speak at its Johor Bahru branch.
Pua, who is Damansara MP, criticised the school’s board of governors for allowing this to happen.
“The school’s board of governors has set the worst possible example for our children,” he said in a Facebook post today.
He said Foon Yew High School, a top Chinese independent school, had invited a “world-renowned kleptocrat”.
Pua said inviting Najib to speak at the school showed the students that “it was acceptable to cheat, lie, steal and abuse power”.
He demanded that the school governors be sacked for “a complete lack of integrity” in failing to set a good example to students.
“Education has always been at the heart of the Chinese community,” he said.
“But if this is the direction the school governors are taking us, then we are on a path to a slow but certain decay and malaise in our culture and dignity.”
Najib is said to have spoken at Foon Yew High School’s Seri Alam branch last Friday and allegedly promoted Barisan Nasional ahead of the March 12 Johor elections.

‘Fossil fuels are choking humanity’: Major UN report sounds the alarm on climate impacts - The IPCC’s latest report examines the impacts of the climate emergency on nature and people around the world.
- It provides world leaders with a gold standard summation of modern climate science at a time when there are fears Russia’s invasion of Ukraine could distract policymakers from taking coordinated action.
- “As current events make all too clear, our continued reliance on fossil fuels makes the global economy and energy security vulnerable to geopolitical shocks and crises,” U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres said on Monday.
The world’s leading climate scientists on Monday warned human-induced climate change is causing dangerous and widespread disruption in nature, with people and ecosystems least able to cope being the hardest hit.
The highly anticipated report from the U.N.’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, approved by 195 member states, makes clear that minor, reactive or incremental changes are no longer sufficient to tackle the climate emergency.
The analysis provides world leaders with a gold standard summation of modern climate science at a time when there are fears Russia’s invasion of Ukraine could distract policymakers from taking coordinated action.

PETALING JAYA: PKR’s Hassan Karim has urged party president Anwar Ibrahim to ignore criticisms by his Pejuang counterpart, Mukhriz Mahathir.
Hassan said Anwar and PKR should not respond or retaliate as the public, and voters in Johor especially, did not wish to see politicians fighting.
“Voters in Johor want to hear what politicians will do to help the people who are struggling now.

SKUDAI: Many youngsters are unaware that they are able to vote in the Johor elections and do not know where they will be casting their ballots, says DAP’s candidate for Skudai, Marina Ibrahim, who pinned the blame on Putrajaya.
In an interview with FMT, she said there was a lack of publicity from the federal government on the Undi18 constitutional amendments and how youths aged 18 to 20 could now vote in the elections.
She said it was Putrajaya that bore the primary responsibility of providing young voters with information on their involvement in the Johor polls.

PETALING JAYA: Muda’s clash with PKR in the Johor state elections will have little impact on Pakatan Harapan (PH), whose component parties are growing apart, says an analyst.
“All these parties are nominally still part of PH, but increasingly going their separate ways, with or without Muda,” said Oh Ei Sun of the Singapore Institute of International Affairs. “The discord within PH is already an open secret.”
He said the different dealings among PH component parties with Muda only highlight such differences, adding that it was “not a very inspiring thing” for PKR to use its own logo instead of PH’s.

Rejection check: Steven Choong tests waters with Puteri Wangsa race |

JOHOR BARU – Johor Parti Bangsa Malaysia (PBM) chief Steven Choong is contesting the Puteri Wangsa seat to gauge the support of voters after his exit from PKR last year.
The Tebrau MP won the federal seat under a PKR ticket during the 2018 general elections with a whopping 62% of the votes.
However, on February 28 last year, Choong and Julau MP Larry Sng defected from PKR, becoming independent parliamentarians pledging support for then prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
This time, during the upcoming Johor polls on March 12, Choong will be testing the waters in Puteri Wangsa, a state seat in the federal constituency of Tebrau.
“I want to see if the voters really reject me or not,” Choong told The Vibes at Lotus Hypermarket in Tebrau.
He said that after his defection from PKR, it took six months for voters to start trusting him again.
Of course, he said, there are still a minority of “die-hard Pakatan Harapan (PH)” supporters who will not even want to take his campaign flyers now.
But this is not a novel situation for Choong, who points out the same thing happened among Barisan Nasional (BN) supporters when he campaigned in 2013 for PKR.
“If you want to be in politics, you have to accept that you can’t please everyone. In politics, you can’t feel hurt when constituents don’t want to accept your flyers, for example,” he said.

PETALING JAYA: DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng has defended the party’s decision to give up seats to Muda in the coming Johor polls, saying it would help strengthen the opposition.
He agreed that some might find it “unusual” for him to focus on strengthening another party instead of the DAP. “But if you only look at strengthening yourself, how does that help to promote your big tent?” he told FMT, referring to a concept espoused by PKR president Anwar Ibrahim aimed at strengthening the opposition bloc.
DAP and Amanah had earlier this month made way for Muda to contest in six seats: Puteri Wangsa, Tenang, Bukit Kepong, Parit Raja, Machap and Bukit Permai.

JOHOR BAHRU: The Chinese community in Johor is shifting its support to Barisan Nasional, even in urban areas, claims former prime minister Najib Razak.
Citing his experience meeting with voters in Chinese-majority areas over the past few days, Najib said the community had been responding positively and attending programmes organised by BN, unlike during GE14.
“I hope this translates into strong support for BN on March 12 (polling day) and BN wins the Perling seat,” he said during a press conference after a campaign event with BN’s candidate for the seat, Tan Hiang Kee.
