MUAR – Pakatan Harapan (PH) would have a fighting chance in securing enough seats to

MUAR – Pakatan Harapan (PH) would have a fighting chance in securing enough seats to form a new Johor government, provided that the voter turnout at the upcoming state polls exceeds 70%, a coalition leader asserted.

Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub, who is deputy president of PH component party Amanah, said this target has driven his party and the coalition as a whole to ramp up their efforts in encouraging those living outside of the state to return home and cast their ballots.

“If it comes to about 70%, we believe we can win. There will be a good chance, a good fight by PH,” he said in an interview with The Vibes.

Salahuddin said PH is confident of reversing its dismal performance in the Melaka election on November 20, when the Umno-led Barisan Nasional (BN) dominated the polls by winning with over a two-thirds majority.

PH only won five of the 28 seats up for grabs. Four of the seats were won by candidates from DAP, while one was secured by an Amanah candidate.

Salahuddin argued that Umno’s victory in Melaka should not be seen as a shift in voter sentiment, but was instead caused by the low voter turnout.

Ismail a captive of court cluster, snap GE unlikely, says Guan Eng
Posted by: superadmin - 02-27-2022, 10:43 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: The dominance of the so-called “court cluster” and the government’s underwhelming performance will hinder Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob from calling a snap general election, says DAP’s Lim Guan Eng.

In an interview with FMT, the DAP secretary-general said he believed that Ismail, an Umno vice–president, was caught in a vice as he was a captive of the court cluster.

The court cluster refers to the group of Umno leaders facing trial on charges of corruption, abuse of power and money laundering among others; the leaders include party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and former prime minister Najib Razak.

“If you look at the court cluster, they are calling the shots in the party (Umno). They want to have early elections so that they can decide on the candidates, not only for GE15 but also for the Cabinet and the prime minister’s position,” he said, adding it was the party president who granted the watikah (letter of candidacy) to all candidates.

BN Johor line-up puts a face on Umno power struggle
Posted by: superadmin - 02-27-2022, 10:37 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: The Barisan Nasional decision to field 70% new candidates in the Johor elections has more to do with a struggle for power in Umno rather than offering voters “fresh faces”, says an analyst.

Oh Ei Sun of the Singapore Institute of International Affairs said he believed the move would see “the mainstream faction” in Umno, led by its president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and former prime minister Najib Razak, consolidating their power in the party.

“I think what’s going on is the gradual surfacing of this internal power struggle between the mainstream faction and those aligned to Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob,” he told FMT. “The mainstream faction is trying to make sure that these candidates are people who will remain loyal to them.”

He said BN’s tactics did not really matter in terms of election results as most of the Umno candidates have a high chance of winning given that Johor is a traditional Umno stronghold.

Oh thinks that BN is most likely to win the biggest number of seats because the opposition is divided and will dilute their votes.

Ex-Goldman banker’s trial reveals greed, graft from 1MDB scheme
Posted by: superadmin - 02-27-2022, 10:32 AM - Forum: Business. Economy and Investment - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Goldman Sachs Group Inc’s dirty laundry has been airing in a New York courtroom, from a fast-escalating racket to loot Malaysia’s wealth fund to the handsome compensation given to a high-flying grifter.

Tim Leissner, a former top banker at Goldman and the star witness in the federal bribery trial of his colleague Roger Ng, has spent the last week recounting troubling behaviour that went on for years at Goldman and would make a compliance officer’s skin crawl.

And he’s not done. Leissner, who pleaded guilty for his role in a scheme that pilfered billions from 1MDB through a series of bond deals arranged by Goldman, is due back in court Tuesday for more testimony. He’s cooperating with prosecutors.

Ex-PH, BN supporters place their hopes in Warisan

JOHOR BAHRU: Warisan’s new Peninsular Malaysia supporters say they are proud to raise the party’s flag and believe that the Sabah-based party can bring the change that they want to see in Johor.

Warisan has six candidates in the Johor elections, the party’s maiden electoral outing in the peninsula. The announcement of its line-up saw supporters of various races at the event.

One of the supporters, who asked to be called MGR Batliam, said he had just started supporting Warisan this year, adding that previously he voted for Barisan Nasional (BN).

PAS’ religious rhetoric won’t work in Johor, says Umno’s Nur Jazlan
Posted by: superadmin - 02-26-2022, 07:51 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: nur-jazlan-abdul-hadi-awang-collage-260222-2.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: The more PAS talks about religion, the better it will be for Barisan Nasional (BN) in the Johor state elections as the state has a balanced population of Malays and non-Malays, says state Umno deputy chief Nur Jazlan Mohamed.

He said the Islamic party, which is contesting 15 seats, is bereft of ideas and all they talk about is polygamy and promoting ridiculous practices like saying husbands can beat their wives “lightly”, among others.

“In Johor, we have a multiracial society, with Malays and non-Malays. PAS is welcome to talk about their brand of religion.

“They can’t engage in discussions about education or the economy. They only know how to talk about religion.

“Go ahead, the more they do it, the more non-Malays will return to the BN fold,” he said in a video interview with Malaysia Gazette last night.

Will it be goodbye forever as youths leave Malaysia for a better future?

By Zack Yong

I was having a chat with my circle of friends recently during the lunar new year about a week ago, we had a small gathering as we talked about how we all were and what we were planning to do in the future; with most of them saying that they want to leave the country to pursue better careers or a better livelihood.

Without a shred of doubt in my mind, most of them, I believe, will end up in another country. Ultimately I can’t advise them on how to live their life, but the majority of us can see what’s going on and must be wondering whether it’s worth staying or going overseas. There is a recent escalation of this issue, as Malaysia slides deeper into becoming an unjust society, many people made the sad or angry choice that their life and future would be better spent somewhere else.

Xi, Putin hold talks at crucial moment of Ukraine crisis, stress peaceful approach
Posted by: superadmin - 02-26-2022, 01:05 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

Two important world leaders, Chinese President Xi Jinping and his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, held a crucial phone call on Friday, one day after Russia launched military operations against Ukraine, in which Xi stressed the significance of resolving the crisis through negotiations.

Chinese analysts believe that the Xi-Putin conversation amid the rapidly escalating Ukraine crisis sent strong signals to the world that the relations and trust between China and Russia is tangible and firm despite US-led Western attempts to sow discord between them using the crisis, and it also showed the world that as a responsible major power, China is actively pushing for a peaceful settlement of the issue by urging the two sides to sit down and talk, which formed a sharp contrast to the US approach that aims to fan the flame.

President Xi said that the dramatic change in the situation in eastern Ukraine recently has attracted a high level of attention from the international community. China determines its position concerning the Ukrainian issue on its own merits. It is important to reject the Cold War mentality, take seriously and respect the reasonable security concerns of all countries, and reach a balanced, effective and sustainable security mechanism in Europe, Xi said.

Xi said China supports Russia in solving the issue through negotiations with Ukraine.

Putin said the US and NATO have long turned a blind eye to Russia's legitimate security concerns, and have repeatedly negated their promises to Russia. Their continued military deployment eastward has challenged Russia's strategic red line. He also expressed Russia's willingness to have high-level negotiations with Ukraine.

Global Times’ online petition demands US return money to Afghans

Click here to sign the joint letter demanding the US to return life-saving money to Afghans.

After the US released a plan to unfreeze money from Afghanistan's central bank but use it for the US' needs, the international community was outraged.

In response, the Global Times launched an online petition on Wednesday demanding that the US return the life-saving money to Afghans unconditionally.

President Joe Biden signed an executive order unfreezing $7 billion in Afghan funds held in the US to distribute the money as the US sees fit. Half of the assets will be used to compensate victims of the September 11 attacks while the other half will be used to set up a trust fund "for the benefit of the Afghan people." The move has not only triggered strong indignation in Afghanistan, but also caused an uproar in the international community.

Vote for our friends in other seats: Muda’s Larkin candidate tells Johor voters
Posted by: superadmin - 02-26-2022, 12:51 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: 26022022-PRN_JOHOR_POOL-Rashid_abu_bakar...OMAR-3.jpg]

JOHOR BARU – Youth-based party Muda’s candidate for the Larkin state seat in Johor has urged voters in other constituencies to support his fellow candidates in the opposition during the election which takes place on March 12.

Rashid Abu Bakar’s statement follows his appearance at the Larkin nomination centre which confirmed a clash between PKR and Muda.

Asked if Muda will urge voters in other constituencies to support PKR, Rashid said, “Of course, we respect our friends and foes.

“We ask for support for all opposition parties whether they are PKR, Muda, Amanah, and DAP, we want to all be together.”

However, Rashid said that he hopes Muda’s clash with PKR will not be an exclusive focus of the polls, emphasising that there are 56 seats in the state and only one sees the two opposition parties vying with each other.
