Johor polls: A repeat of Melaka on the cards? |

PETALING JAYA: Nomination day has arrived, officially kicking off the Johor state elections, although the three main coalitions vying for power had begun their campaigning much earlier.
Perikatan Nasional (PN) and Pakatan Harapan (PH) made great efforts since early February to reach out to Johoreans, holding talks all around the state to “raise awareness” about current issues.
But Barisan Nasional (BN) will be hitting the campaign trail in high spirits following its thumping victory in Melaka last November, where PN and PH attempted and failed to form the state government on their own.
On the other hand, PH will be reeling from its heavy losses in both the Melaka and Sarawak state elections.
While BN and PN will be contesting all 56 state assembly seats, PH will be in all but six of them after DAP and Amanah made way for newcomers Muda.

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 26 ― As the various federal Opposition parties vie with one another in several seat tussles, the major coalitions of Barisan Nasional (BN) and Perikatan Nasional (PN) will see them go head-to-head clash in all 56 seats in the March 12 Johor state election.
According to both coalition’s candidate lists released yesterday, several areas stand to witness intense fights, with several prominent candidates vying for the same seats.
BN and its lynchpin party Umno are currently at loggerheads with PN in the run-up to the Johor state election as leaders from both coalitions have in recent weeks traded barbs with one another following the withdrawal of support from lawmakers that triggered the change in federal government last year.
Among those to look out for is the seat of Benut, which is being defended by its incumbent Datuk Hasni Mohammad, who is also Johor Mentri Besar, in a possible four-cornered fight with PN, PKR and Parti Pejuang Tanah Air (Pejuang).

PETALING JAYA: Claims that Pakatan Harapan (PH) failed in its 22 months in power are false and dishonest, says DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng.
Lim, the former finance minister cited the reduction of toll rates on the North-South Expressway, reforms in procurement, abolition of goods and services tax (GST), and the provision of assistance for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) as among the coalition’s successes.
In an interview with FMT, Lim said: “There were many things that we did. We have open tenders and the savings that we have secured. We were also able to make sure that Malaysia’s fiscal and financial situation did not become worse. We were (also) able to bring up charges against those involved in 1MDB, the court cluster. We abolished GST.”

JOHOR BAHRU: Barisan Nasional (BN) is confident of being able to get Chinese voters to vote in its favour in the Johor state elections, an Umno leader said today.
Umno secretary-general Ahmad Maslan said with such support, the coalition hopes to achieve the target of forming a more stable state government with the mandate from the people of Johor.
He added that this was based on his observations and experience as Pontian MP, where most voters from the community expressed a desire to support BN.
“I have seen it myself how the Chinese community wants to return to BN. In Johor, the Chinese community comprises 37% of the electorate.

1MDB trial: UAE deputy PM, Najib among recipients of US$100 mil briberies, Leissner alleges

KUALA LUMPUR – Briberies of at least US$100 million to top officials in Malaysia and Abu Dhabi are what it took to grease the wheels in the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) financial scandal, said star witness and disgraced Goldman Sachs banker Tim Leissner in his third day of testimony.
Prior to this, he had testified he was told that United Arab Emirates’ Deputy Prime Minister Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan “wouldn’t get out of bed for less than US$100 million” as well as former Malaysian prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak getting his share of kickbacks.
In his testimony against former colleague Roger Ng, Leissner now puts the blame on fugitive Low Taek Jho, popularly known as Jho Low, saying the Penang-born businessman was the mastermind of the multibillion-dollar 1MDB scam.
He alleged that Low spelled out who needed to be paid off for approval to raise and spend 1MDB’s billions, reported Bloomberg.

No tit for tat, PKR won’t contest Muda’s seats |

PETALING JAYA: PKR will not “infringe” on seats allocated to Pakatan Harapan’s partners and those offered to Muda in the Johor elections, its state leader, Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh, said.
He said PKR would not do so out of respect for its PH allies Amanah and DAP.
Yesterday, Muda unveiled Rasid Abu Bakar as its candidate for the Larkin seat after PKR had already announced Dr Zamil Najwah Arbain as its pick on Feb 14.
“I deeply regret Muda’s action (in announcing its own candidate) because it clearly disrespects the spirit of unity the opposition should adopt in championing the interests of the people and the state of Johor.

Winter Olympics start new era for spread of Chinese culture |

The Beijing Winter Olympics had ended, yet the unique "Chinese romance" left by the event still lingers, with international and Chinese culture experts sharing their belief that just like the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics, this edition of the Winter Olympics will be another key point for Chinese culture to be further communicated to the world.
But some media and politicians in the West, who have remained vigilant about China's growing influence, will spare no effort to ring-fence it. However, the harmonious, peaceful and loving signals sent by this Winter Olympics will help counter this myth of China as an "aggressive" power as some have alleged.
After staying in the Olympic Village for several days, Maltese snowboarder Jenise Spiteri became a loyal fan of Chinese culture. She previously earned the nickname "steamed bun" because her love for Chinese steamed buns amazed and touch netizens.
Her love for Chinese food lingers even after she left the country. On Wednesday, Spiteri posted pictures on her newly opened account on Sina Weibo of her and the mascot of the Winter Olympics, Bing Dwen Dwen, enjoying delicacies in San Francisco's Chinatown.
Jenise is not alone. Many foreign athletes have grown fascinated by Chinese culture during their short stay that many were spotted leaving with items they obtained during the event, including red Chinese lanterns.

The EU faced furious remonstrations from Kyiv as Europe’s leaders looked set to hold back from imposing the potentially most damaging sanction on Russia, even as the Kremlin lay siege to Ukraine via land, air and sea.
Ukraine’s foreign minister, Dmytro Kuleba, voiced his anger as EU heads of state and government appeared likely to decide against blocking Russia from an international payments system through which it receives foreign currency.
With casualties mounting, Kuleba warned that European and US politicians would have “blood on their hands” if they failed to impose the heaviest toll on Moscow by cutting Russia from the so-called Swift payments system.
“I will not be diplomatic on this,” he tweeted. “Everyone who now doubts whether Russia should be banned from Swift has to understand that the blood of innocent Ukrainian men, women and children will be on their hands too. BAN RUSSIA FROM

SKUDAI: DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng says Amanah deputy president Salahuddin Ayub was tasked with leading discussions with other opposition parties like Pejuang and Warisan for the Johor polls, though this proved unsuccessful.
In a press conference here today, Lim said Salahuddin was among the key leaders tasked with holding negotiations with these parties.
“So Salahuddin, among other leaders, was the conduit to communicate with these parties as part of Pakatan Harapan’s ‘big tent’ approach.
“But it apparently didn’t bear fruit,” he said.
