Malaysia’s religious rhetoric still regressive, says academic
Posted by: superadmin - 02-24-2022, 08:23 AM - Forum: Stop Racism and Religious Bigotry - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: The religious rhetoric in Malaysia remains more regressive than progressive, according to an academic who warned more than two years ago that the country was slipping towards extremist tendencies.

Syed Farid Alatas, a Malaysian who serves as professor of sociology at the National University of Singapore, said there had been no improvement in the situation since September 2019, when he alleged that Malaysia was on a slippery slope to extremism following several crackdowns on Shia Muslims by Johor and Selangor religious authorities.

He said then that there was an urgent need to educate the young because changes could take one or two generations before becoming tangible.

Must be ‘coincidence’, quips Najib on cronyism claims against Dr Mahathir
Posted by: superadmin - 02-23-2022, 07:28 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR – Former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak has doubled down on his cronyism allegations against Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, citing several business dealings between the latter’s sons and tycoons.

Responding to Dr Mahathir’s recent denial on the matter, Najib sarcastically noted two “coincidences”, with the first involving Datuk Danny Tan Chee Sing, the brother of Berjaya Corporation Bhd founder Tan Sri Vincent Tan Chee Yioun.

The Pekan MP also took a veiled swipe at Vincent Tan, who made recent headlines after it was revealed that former attorney-general Tan Sri Tommy Thomas had reduced drug charges against his son during Dr Mahathir’s second stint as prime minister.

Najib said one of the coincidences was Danny Tan buying over public-listed group Diperdana Corp Bhd in 1994, which was at the time Malaysia’s third-largest haulage company.

“But not even two years later, the brother of the tycoon (Vincent Tan) sold the company to (Dr) Mahathir’s eldest son (Mirzan Mahathir) who was aged 37 at the time,” Najib said on Facebook.

Ridding culture of ‘Malu Apa Bossku’ part of Pejuang’s manifesto
Posted by: superadmin - 02-23-2022, 05:51 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: Mahathir-Mohamad-Pejuang-Aspirasi-Johor-...0222-2.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: Pejuang’s manifesto for the Johor state elections will focus on four main issues, including one to “destroy” the principles that have been promulgated by Barisan Nasional and Najib Razak, party chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad said.

The other items in the manifesto, called Pejuang’s Aspiration for Johor, are to bring about economic recovery in Malaysia, curbing corruption, and fighting for the rights of all races, he said.

Mahathir said the party is committed to getting rid of the culture of “Malu Apa Bossku” that is being promoted by BN and Najib.

He said Malaysians have been led astray by the tagline which implies that there is nothing to be ashamed of despite having done something wrong.

BNM okayed US$1bil transfer after bribe was given, Leissner tells US court
Posted by: superadmin - 02-23-2022, 05:44 PM - Forum: Business, Economy and Investment - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) approved an “overnight” foreign exchange transfer of US$1 billion from 1MDB to PetroSaudi International (PSI), after then central bank governor Zeti Akhtar Aziz’s husband had allegedly been bribed to “make it happen”, former banker Tim Leissner told a US court.

Leissner, the star witness in the trial of Roger Ng, former Goldman Sachs head of investment banking in Malaysia, described the overnight transfer of the US$1 billion from 1MDB to PetroSaudi as “unprecedented”.

It is understood that this US$1 billion included US$700 million to Good Star Ltd allegedly controlled by Low Taek Jho, better known as Jho Low.

Only 9% of plastic recycled worldwide: OECD
Posted by: superadmin - 02-23-2022, 02:08 PM - Forum: Environment Protection News - No Replies

[Image: plastic_bottles_plastic_waste_plastics_pixabay.jpg]

PARIS – Less than 10% of the plastic used across the world is recycled, the OECD said Tuesday, calling for "coordinated and global solutions" ahead of expected talks on an international plastics treaty.

A new report by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development report found that 460 million tonnes of plastics were used in 2019, the number nearly doubling since 2000.

The amount of plastic waste had more than doubled during that time to 353 million tonnes, the Paris-based OECD said.

"After taking into account losses during recycling, only 9% of plastic waste was ultimately recycled, while 19% was incinerated and almost 50% went to sanitary landfills," it said in its Global Plastics Outlook.

"The remaining 22% was disposed of in uncontrolled dumpsites, burned in open pits or leaked into the environment."

Abah schools Muda, calling party small, unstructured
Posted by: superadmin - 02-23-2022, 01:59 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

KULAI – National Recovery Council Chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin took a swipe at Muda saying that the newly formed party does not have big numbers and remains unstructured.

Commenting on potential battles between Perikatan Nasional (PN) and Muda in the upcoming Johor polls, the Bersatu chairman added that he is unsure if Muda even has branches in the right places.

“Muda is still young, it still does not have big numbers, only a small number of members.

“We are not even sure if they have divisions in Kulai, it is still unstructured,” Muhyiddin told a press conference after a meet and greet session with residents at Felda Taib Andak here.

He commended Muda’s bravery for presenting fresh candidates, but also mentioned that it is a new party without signs of struggle.

“It will be up to the voters to decide if Muda is capable or not.”

1MDB trial: Leissner reveals affair with ex-Astro CEO Rohana Rozhan, buys her silence with US$10mil home

[Image: 20220223_rohana_rozhan_Nikkei_Asian_Review_pic.jpg]

KUALA LUMPUR – Former Goldman Sachs banker Tim Leissner’s testimony in the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) trial in the United States turned salacious after he revealed having an affair with Astro Malaysia Holdings Bhd former CEO Rohana Rozhan and the S$10 million (RM31.1 million) home he gifted her.

He alleged that he bought her a US$10 million (RM41.85 million) home in London in 2013 after she had threatened to expose his involvement with 1MDB and that the relationship was from 2003 to 2013, reported Bloomberg.

“Ms Rozhan was very upset that I was ending our relationship to be with my future wife, with Kimora,” Leissner was quoted as telling the jury, referring to his wife Kimora Lee Simmons.

“If I didn’t buy her a house, she would tell the authorities about my involvement in the 1MDB scandal. She was threatening to expose me. At the time, 2013, I was very fearful of that.”

Law minister says ‘on track’ to tackle party-hopping, AGC told to start final draft to amend Constitution

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 23 — Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Parliament and Law) Datuk Seri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar has reportedly said that he is “on track” to table the law banning party-hopping by mid-March.

A report by the The Star today quoted Wan Junaidi as saying that the Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC) had been told yesterday to begin the final drafting of several proposed constitutional amendments to tackle the issue — which he expects to be passed by the end of the next Parliament sitting from February 28 to March 24.

“Instead of enacting a new set of laws which may have their constitutionality challenged in court, we are looking at the Constitution itself as the basis to stop party hopping once and for all.

“I am still on track to table the amendments by mid-March,” he reportedly said.

Beijing 2022 to 'break even,' has immeasurable long-term economic benefits
Posted by: superadmin - 02-23-2022, 10:45 AM - Forum: Business, Economy and Investment - No Replies

[Image: 8e4d6f55-7928-4f25-9512-a2534fd3f6d0.jpeg]

In a sign of their sharp business mind, many Chinese are discussing on social media the balance sheet of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, which concluded just on Sunday but continue to occupy people's mind with lingering effects.

The Beijing Winter Games will have a large chance of breaking even, and may even come at a small profit, industry insiders and analysts predicted, although the long-term economic benefits are what really count, with millions of people to benefit from the Winter Games' legacy in the years, even decades, to come.

While the official audit of the Games is yet to be announced, analysts and economists said the event could basically break even, in line with official forecasts by the organizing committee of Beijing 2022, due to Beijing's implementation of the concept of delivering a frugal Olympic Games, China's advantages in population base and social system.

Unlike many of its predecessors, the Beijing Winter Olympics, the greenest gathering in the history of Olympic Movement, was by no means an extravagant event.

Based on current estimates, the Beijing Winter Olympics have achieved a balanced budget, Yan Jiarong, spokesperson for the Beijing Organising Committee for the 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, told a press conference in Beijing on February 1.
