PETALING JAYA: The issue over the repayment of 1MDB’s principal debts has escalated since former prime minister Najib Razak spoke about it in Parliament on Wednesday.
Finance minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz addressed the issue in the Dewan Rakyat yesterday after Najib and DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng had also subsequently released statements on it.
It also led to Petaling Jaya MP Tony Pua submitting a motion in the Dewan Rakyat to refer Najib to the Rights and Privileges Committee for trying to confuse MPs over the issue.
Pua said it was inaccurate to say that not a single sen of public funds was used to repay 1MDB’s principal amounts as the Najib-led administration had repaid RM8.8 billion in principal and interest prior to 2018.
FMT takes a look at how this issue has snowballed.

KL-Bangkok HSR not a good idea, says expert |

GEORGE TOWN: The proposed Kuala Lumpur-Bangkok High-Speed Rail (HSR) project is a bad idea, says a transport expert.
Goh Bok Yen said the government should first build the HSR to Singapore and then build the second leg of the service to Bangkok.
He said linking up with Singapore would make better economic sense as it would tap into the island republic’s international market and will have guaranteed spillover effects in Malaysia.
“I don’t see any reason for us to link up to Bangkok as the core economic activities with Thailand are not with the capital city, but at the border towns in the north.

When is the right time for GE15, Tok Mat asks Tajuddin |

PETALING JAYA: Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan has urged the party’s Pasir Salak MP Tajuddin Abdul Rahman to “enlighten” the people as to when the next general election (GE15) should be held.
“Is it the end of the year? Or do we wait for the current parliamentary term to expire, sometime after May 2023?” he told FMT.
“Since Datuk Seri Tajuddin says I am ‘pressuring’ the prime minister to call for GE15, perhaps he can advise all Umno members as to when we should have GE15.”
Mohamad said the grassroots, including the Youth and Puteri wings, had proposed that GE15 be held earlier, before the current Parliament terms ends in 2023.
“But it’s okay, maybe he knows better than the grassroots, so let him suggest the correct timing for GE15.”
Earlier this week, Tajuddin accused Mohamad of “pressuring” the prime minister to call for GE15 immediately at a time when the government was stable after the MoU signed with Pakatan Harapan last year.

The world could be on the brink of an energy crisis rivaling the 1970s, says IHS Markit’s Yergin - Russia’s Ukraine invasion could have set in motion an energy market disruption on the scale of major oil crises in the 1970s, according to Daniel Yergin, vice chairman of IHS Markit.
- Sanctions by the U.S. and allies on Russia’s financial system have disrupted sales of Russian oil, with banks and buyers wary of running afoul of the punitive measures.
- “This could be the worst crisis since the Arab oil embargo and the Iranian revolution in the 1970s,” said Yergin.
Russia’s Ukraine invasion could have set in motion an energy market disruption on the scale of major oil crises in the 1970s, according to Daniel Yergin, vice chairman of IHS Markit.
Moscow is one of the world’s largest oil exporters. Sanctions by the U.S. and allies on Russia’s financial system have already set in motion a backlash against Russian crude from banks, buyers and shippers.
Yergin, also an author and energy market historian, said even though Russian energy was not sanctioned by the U.S. and other countries, there could be a large loss of Russian barrels from the market. The country exports about 7.5 million barrels a day of oil and refined products, he noted.

SIMPANG RENGGAM, March 4 — PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has hinted last night that there is a specific reason behind the party naming Simpang Renggam MP Maszlee Malik to contest a state seat.
“There is a reason why Maszlee was the only PKR MP in the state seat of Layang-Layang.
“There is a reason why he was out here to service the constituency and Johor people,” he told a rally at the Layang-Layang main operations centre.
This comes amid rumours that the former education minister Maszlee will be Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) choice for Johor’s next mentri besar if it wins the Johor election.

Youth vote a game changer? Not really, says analyst |

PETALING JAYA: An analyst has voiced disagreement with pundits who see the addition of 750,000 new voters in the Johor polls as a harbinger of change.
Shahrill Sabarudin, a fellow at the research institute Bait Al Amanah, told FMT he didn’t believe there would be much of a change in the game of politics just because many of the new voters would be below the age of 21 and were often thought to differ from older voters in their political views.
He noted that a significant portion of the new voters were automatically registered and said this showed that many, particularly those were qualified to vote in the 2018 general election, were indifferent to the electoral process.
“Why would this state election be any more exciting to them?” he said.

Don’t let DNB become next 1MDB, probe into Ericsson deal: Fahmi |

KUALA LUMPUR – Fahmi Fadzil (Lembah Pantai-PH) wants authorities to investigate Digital Nasional Bhd’s (DNB) 5G network deal with Swedish telecommunications firm Ericsson over possible corruption.
This after it was revealed through media reports that the United States’ Justice Department (DoJ) is probing Ericsson over years of alleged corruption in several countries.
Speaking in Parliament, Fahmi said the allegations against the communications firm are huge as they involve its global business activities, and also considering that DNB signed an agreement with the company July last year to be its 5G network equipment provider.
“I urge the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to conduct a full probe into the matter.
“Were there elements of corruption in the issuance of the contract to Ericsson?” he said when debating the royal address today.
“This reminds us of the issue of 1MDB, where we had Goldman Sachs involved then. Do we want to see a similar situation with DNB? We need to avoid Ericsson being like (Goldman Sachs).”
Apart from MACC, Fahmi also called on the Public Accounts Committee to conduct a full audit of DNB and to scrutinise its deal with Ericsson.
