US intelligence warns American firms to protect 5 key technologies from China
Posted by: superadmin - 10-23-2021, 11:51 AM - Forum: Technology - No Replies

  • Artificial intelligence, quantum computing, bioscience, semiconductors, and autonomous systems are five critical tech areas, says US intelligence
  • American firms and researchers need to pay more attention to protect research against threats from nation-states acquiring American know-how, officials add

US intelligence officials issued a warning to American technology firms against working with China in five crucial areas.

Artificial intelligence, quantum computing, bioscience, semiconductors, and autonomous systems are sectors “where the stakes are potentially greatest for US economic and national security”, the National Counterintelligence and Security Centre (NCSC) said in a new paper.

American companies, academics and research communities need to pay more attention to protect talent and research against threats from nation-states that have been using legal and illegal means to acquire American know-how to dominate these technologies, according to the NCSC, a centre within the Office of the Director of National Intelligence.

The officials stressed they were not advocating for a complete decoupling from Chinese companies and research facilities, but said there is a need to understand that the Chinese government has comprehensive national plan to dominate in these fields.

The Pandora revelation: what next in the law for Malaysia? – Rajan Navaratnam
Posted by: superadmin - 10-23-2021, 11:35 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

THE International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) had made a startling revelation of offshore accounts and shell companies belonging to or linked to prominent personalities.

The report titled the “Pandora Papers” was based on leaked records from offshore services firms around the globe.

According to the leaked records, ICIJ had unearthed and discovered many top political figures and career criminals who had abused the offshore financial system, which is shrouded in secrecy, to facilitate tax evasion and conceal wealth obtained from illicit activities and illegitimate cross-border financing.

The establishment of offshore companies and bank accounts is not illegal nor uncommon among businessmen who operate across international borders to be free and exempt from high taxes, to facilitate global trading, relaxation of accounting and tax filings and asset protection.

However, the concerns on these offshore shelters is that it is open to abuse by tax evaders and criminals to launder illicit funds. In this regard, it provides a web of protection to tax evaders, conceals the origins of illegitimate sources of funds and provides a safe haven for corrupt government officials because it is based on a system of financial secrecy, interlocking layers of protection by anonymity and lenient anti-money laundering procedures.

It is common that there is no legal obligation to disclose beneficial ownership for offshore companies in any jurisdiction.

In the world of offshore operations, it is also common that nominee directors and trustees are paid to hide the true identities of who are really behind these vehicles.

Why is Najib ‘taking charge’ in Melaka and not Tok Mat in Zahid’s absence?
Posted by: superadmin - 10-23-2021, 11:32 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR – Given Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s popularity on social media, political analysts suggest this may be the reason why he appears to have been given the go-ahead to lead Umno into the upcoming Melaka election.

Speaking to The Vibes, Universiti Malaya’s Prof Awang Azman Awang Pawi suggests that, if Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi did indeed task Najib with guiding the party in the coming polls, it would most certainly be due to the fact that he has experience in both leading the country and the party.

At the same time, Awang contends that the right person to lead the party would actually be Umno deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, fondly known as Tok Mat, given that he is Zahid’s No. 2.

Yesterday, Najib had informed the high court here that he will postpone his Singapore trip, as Zahid has entrusted him to ensure all party operations run smoothly given the Umno president’s plans to head to Germany for medical treatment.

“If we take into account hierarchy, the most suitable person to lead the party is Tok Mat as deputy president.

“But if Najib is merely helping and not leading the party, it isn’t an issue because any Umno member is welcome to strengthen their machinery.

“If indeed Najib is leading, it would be because he has influence in social media and may be able to pull in voters,” Awang said.

Tian Chua denies working for Azmin’s return to PKR
Posted by: superadmin - 10-23-2021, 11:14 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: PKR vice-president Tian Chua has defended his call for Pakatan Harapan to work with anyone that can help it win the Melaka state election, denying that he is trying to open up a channel for Azmin Ali to rejoin PKR.

Speaking to FMT, he said it was not up to him to decide on the return of those who had left the party.

“Some people are saying that by pushing for PH to work with anyone so we can win in Melaka, I am actually testing the waters to see if Azmin and others who have left will be accepted back into PKR,” the former Batu MP said.

“Such talk is baseless and ridiculous.”

He added, however, that party president Anwar Ibrahim would have the majority to become the prime minister if Azmin and 20 other MPs were to return to PKR.

“If this ever happens, it is up to Anwar to accept. It is not my call.”

He added that it was also up to Anwar to decide whether PKR should collaborate with Bersatu’s Muhyiddin Yassin and his team.

“All I am saying is that we must find a collaboration that leads us to victory,” he said.

“We must remember that the next general election could get messy. There is the third force – Warisan, Muda and various NGOs – coming forward to contest.

What the appointment of 98 female judges to Egypt's State Council means for women's rights

[Image: egypt-female-jud_hpMain_20211021-214933_16x9_992.jpg]

Seventy-two years of Egyptian women's rights activism paid off this week as the State Council, an important independent judiciary body in the country, appointed 98 female judges for the first time.

Iman Sherif, one of the appointed judges, described the move as "historic" during the swearing-in ceremony, saying she was over the moon, according to state-run Al-Ahram Newspaper.

"We pledged to live up to our responsibilities. I can't describe my happiness," she added.

"It is very important, not only to see the long resistance came up with this result, but also how much it means to the new generation," Nehad Abu El Komsan, head of the Egyptian Center for Women's Rights, told ABC News. "It is a step ahead for the younger generation to believe there can be no restrictions in their dreams."

The recent appointment of 98 judges to Egypt's State Council has considerable implications.

Crackers and biscuits can cause cancer, warns HK group
Posted by: superadmin - 10-22-2021, 03:58 PM - Forum: Health News - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Crackers and biscuits are healthy snacks, which provide vitamins and dietary fibre, besides being a good source of energy, right?

Wrong.

The Hong Kong Consumer Council claims it has found cancer-causing substances in 60 samples of biscuits and crackers sold on the local market that it tested.

The council said it found cancer-causing elements like glycidol and acrylamide, which are by-products created when ingredients are heated at high temperatures to make biscuits and crackers.

In a statement posted on its website, it said tests showed the glycidol content to be between 11 microgrammes (mcg/kg) and 3,900 mcg/kg.

The council said 11 samples did not have glycidol and acrylamide, saying that was proof that biscuits and crackers could be made without such contaminants.

The council also found high levels of 3-MCPD in 56 samples. 3-MCPD is said to adversely affect kidneys and male fertility.

The council said it also found high sodium, sugar and fat in 85% of the samples. Nutrition labels were also found to be inaccurate in 40% of the samples tested.

With such arrogance, Burns will suffer setbacks in China: Global Times editorial
Posted by: superadmin - 10-22-2021, 03:11 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: 70df050c-ca67-4c61-b538-debd87b2c11c.jpeg]

Nicholas Burns, the new US ambassador to China nominated by US President Joe Biden, claimed China is "the biggest geopolitical test of the 21st century" during a US Senate hearing on Wednesday. He has also made an all-round fierce attack against China's domestic and foreign policies. What he has said must be the toughest and most arrogant confirmation hearing statement an incoming US ambassador has made before coming to China.

Burns almost repeated Washington's accusations against China over the past nine months, such as labeling China's policies in Xinjiang as "genocide," smearing China's Hong Kong policy and declaring that the US "cannot trust China." He said Beijing had been "stonewalling" the world about the origins of the COVID-19. He also said the US should increase arms sales to the island of Taiwan and make Taiwan "a tough nut to crack."

Burns declared that China has "very few friends." He called on the US not to overestimate China's strength and underestimate US strength, saying that "we should have confidence in our own strengths."

Such a systematic attack on China is not what an incoming US ambassador should do under normal circumstances. Burns' statement demonstrated the US political elites' overall hostility toward China. The message of the hearing was: One needs to be this tough to be the US ambassador to China today.

More than 80 countries voice support to China amid US and a few Western countries smearing at UN session

[Image: 26ba6787-e851-44ca-b213-b5ad866fa605.jpeg]

More than 80 countries voiced their support to China for developing its own pattern for human rights development and opposed politicizing human rights issues to suppress other countries at the 76th session of UN General Assembly on Thursday while the US and a few Western countries started a new round of attacks on China over topics of its Xinjiang, Hong Kong and Xizang (Tibet) regions.

On behalf of 62 countries, Cuba made a joint statement on Thursday at the UN General Assembly to support China for developing its own pattern on human rights that fits its conditions and oppose other countries' interference in China's internal affairs under the banner of human rights.

The joint statement was made at the 76th session of the UN General Assembly as the Third Committee reviewed human rights issues but a few countries, including the US and France made groundless accusations targeting China's human rights record.

In response, more than 80 countries supported China's stance.

It’s time for Americans to buy less stuff

In September, I started getting pesky emails from brands hinting that I should get a head start on my holiday shopping. Next came the headlines, and then the reminders from social media users dishing out the same advice. Holiday shopping starts a little earlier every year, but this isn’t just the typical push. People are encouraged to order their gifts as soon as possible or risk having packages arrive late, due to rampant supply chain disruptions and mailing delays. Even books (yes, books!) aren’t safe from the impending shortages.

The holiday shopping industrial complex feels especially unavoidable in 2021, with Halloween still more than a week away. Amazon, Macy’s, Target, and Walmart have launched early-bird sales, and retailers are preparing to dish out millions of dollars on ads for strong fourth-quarter sales.
