Taliban ‘forcibly evicting’ Hazaras and opponents in Afghanistan
Posted by: superadmin - 10-23-2021, 02:20 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

Thousands of people have been forced from their homes and land by Taliban officials in the north and south of Afghanistan, in what amounted to collective punishment, illegal under international law, Human Rights Watch has warned.

Many of the evictions targeted members of the Shia Hazara community, while others were of people connected to the former Afghan government. Land and homes seized this way have often been redistributed to Taliban supporters, HRW said.

Forced evictions logged by Human Rights Watch took place across five provinces, including Kandahar, Helmand and Uruzgan in the south, Daikundi in the centre, and the northern province of Balkh.

MLMs might not be able to get away with their shady promises much longer
Posted by: superadmin - 10-23-2021, 02:09 PM - Forum: Business, Economy and Investment - No Replies

Say I’ve got a business selling bananas, and I want you to sell bananas, too. Presumably, you’d want to know some details about this banana business opportunity, such as whether I’ve ever been sued for lying about my business, whether the amount of money I say you would earn is accurate, and what happens if, after selling for a while, you want to quit. Perhaps you’d want to take a week to think about it before signing on.

For most business opportunities in the United States, that’s the legal standard I would have to follow to get you on board. It doesn’t apply to multilevel marketing companies (MLMs), though. They’re exempt — at least for now.

A decade ago, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) put in place the “business opportunity rule,” which basically describes a set of requirements for people trying to get others involved in a business opportunity, such as a work-from-home job (some of which are scams). The rule says that people offering such opportunities have to provide support for any income claims — if I tell you that you can make $1 million a year in my banana business, I have to prove it. They must also disclose whether they’ve been involved in certain legal actions (such as any involving fraud), and list them out if they have; detail their refund and cancellation policy (if they have one); and provide a list of at least 10 other people who have bought in, all seven days before the person they’re recruiting pays any money or signs anything.

There were plenty of people who believed that MLMs should be included in the FTC rule when it was enacted a decade ago, but they were granted an exception following massive pushback from the industry. “That’s the power of lobbying for you,” said Douglas Brooks, an attorney who specializes in MLMs.

That could be about to change. The FTC announced in June that it would review the business opportunity rule as part of a revised 10-year review schedule — and there is hope that, this time around, MLMs might be roped in.

How you’ll know when Covid-19 has gone from “pandemic” to “endemic”
Posted by: superadmin - 10-23-2021, 02:03 PM - Forum: Covid-19 Pandemic - No Replies

You’ve probably heard it by now: Covid-19 is not going away. The broad consensus among experts is that it’s not realistic to think we’re going to totally eradicate this virus. We will, however, see it move out of the pandemic phase and into the endemic phase.

That means the virus will keep circulating in parts of the global population for years, but its prevalence and impact will come down to relatively manageable levels, so it becomes more like the flu than a world-stopping disease.

For now, “we have to remember that we are still in a pandemic with this virus,” said Jen Kates, director of global health and HIV policy at the Kaiser Family Foundation. “We’re not yet at a point where we’re living with endemic Covid. When we get to that point some of this will be much easier, but we’re not there.”

So, how will we know when we are there? Is there some clear threshold or some magical metric that will tell us, objectively and undeniably?

Yes and no.

Facebook whistleblower releases documents to multiple news outlets showing company knows the harm it causes
  • Multiple news outlets on Friday published stories based on documents provided by Frances Haugen, a former Facebook employee and whistleblower.
  • The reports cite internal Facebook research and documents that show the company is aware of many of the harms its apps and services cause.

Facebook on Friday was hit with multiple reports stemming from documents provided to news outlets by Frances Haugen, a former employee turned whistleblower.

The reports cite internal company research and documents that show the company is aware of many of the harms its apps and services cause but either doesn’t rectify the issues or struggles to address them.

According to a report from NBC, Facebook ran an experiment that showed how a new profile for a conservative mother from North Carolina began, within two days, to receive recommendations to join groups related to the far-right conspiracy group QAnon.

US intelligence warns American firms to protect 5 key technologies from China
Posted by: superadmin - 10-23-2021, 11:51 AM - Forum: Technology - No Replies

  • Artificial intelligence, quantum computing, bioscience, semiconductors, and autonomous systems are five critical tech areas, says US intelligence
  • American firms and researchers need to pay more attention to protect research against threats from nation-states acquiring American know-how, officials add

[Image: df4b9882-3361-11ec-8bc1-f82f86ab0ffa_ima...1634954721]

US intelligence officials issued a warning to American technology firms against working with China in five crucial areas.

Artificial intelligence, quantum computing, bioscience, semiconductors, and autonomous systems are sectors “where the stakes are potentially greatest for US economic and national security”, the National Counterintelligence and Security Centre (NCSC) said in a new paper.

American companies, academics and research communities need to pay more attention to protect talent and research against threats from nation-states that have been using legal and illegal means to acquire American know-how to dominate these technologies, according to the NCSC, a centre within the Office of the Director of National Intelligence.

The officials stressed they were not advocating for a complete decoupling from Chinese companies and research facilities, but said there is a need to understand that the Chinese government has comprehensive national plan to dominate in these fields.

The Pandora revelation: what next in the law for Malaysia? – Rajan Navaratnam
Posted by: superadmin - 10-23-2021, 11:35 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

THE International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) had made a startling revelation of offshore accounts and shell companies belonging to or linked to prominent personalities.

The report titled the “Pandora Papers” was based on leaked records from offshore services firms around the globe.

According to the leaked records, ICIJ had unearthed and discovered many top political figures and career criminals who had abused the offshore financial system, which is shrouded in secrecy, to facilitate tax evasion and conceal wealth obtained from illicit activities and illegitimate cross-border financing.

The establishment of offshore companies and bank accounts is not illegal nor uncommon among businessmen who operate across international borders to be free and exempt from high taxes, to facilitate global trading, relaxation of accounting and tax filings and asset protection.

However, the concerns on these offshore shelters is that it is open to abuse by tax evaders and criminals to launder illicit funds. In this regard, it provides a web of protection to tax evaders, conceals the origins of illegitimate sources of funds and provides a safe haven for corrupt government officials because it is based on a system of financial secrecy, interlocking layers of protection by anonymity and lenient anti-money laundering procedures.

It is common that there is no legal obligation to disclose beneficial ownership for offshore companies in any jurisdiction.

In the world of offshore operations, it is also common that nominee directors and trustees are paid to hide the true identities of who are really behind these vehicles.

Why is Najib ‘taking charge’ in Melaka and not Tok Mat in Zahid’s absence?
Posted by: superadmin - 10-23-2021, 11:32 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR – Given Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s popularity on social media, political analysts suggest this may be the reason why he appears to have been given the go-ahead to lead Umno into the upcoming Melaka election.

Speaking to The Vibes, Universiti Malaya’s Prof Awang Azman Awang Pawi suggests that, if Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi did indeed task Najib with guiding the party in the coming polls, it would most certainly be due to the fact that he has experience in both leading the country and the party.

At the same time, Awang contends that the right person to lead the party would actually be Umno deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, fondly known as Tok Mat, given that he is Zahid’s No. 2.

Yesterday, Najib had informed the high court here that he will postpone his Singapore trip, as Zahid has entrusted him to ensure all party operations run smoothly given the Umno president’s plans to head to Germany for medical treatment.

“If we take into account hierarchy, the most suitable person to lead the party is Tok Mat as deputy president.

“But if Najib is merely helping and not leading the party, it isn’t an issue because any Umno member is welcome to strengthen their machinery.

“If indeed Najib is leading, it would be because he has influence in social media and may be able to pull in voters,” Awang said.

Tian Chua denies working for Azmin’s return to PKR
Posted by: superadmin - 10-23-2021, 11:14 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: Tian-CHuan-Azmin-Ali-n-Anwar-Ibrahim-collage-231021.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: PKR vice-president Tian Chua has defended his call for Pakatan Harapan to work with anyone that can help it win the Melaka state election, denying that he is trying to open up a channel for Azmin Ali to rejoin PKR.

Speaking to FMT, he said it was not up to him to decide on the return of those who had left the party.

“Some people are saying that by pushing for PH to work with anyone so we can win in Melaka, I am actually testing the waters to see if Azmin and others who have left will be accepted back into PKR,” the former Batu MP said.

“Such talk is baseless and ridiculous.”

He added, however, that party president Anwar Ibrahim would have the majority to become the prime minister if Azmin and 20 other MPs were to return to PKR.

“If this ever happens, it is up to Anwar to accept. It is not my call.”

He added that it was also up to Anwar to decide whether PKR should collaborate with Bersatu’s Muhyiddin Yassin and his team.

“All I am saying is that we must find a collaboration that leads us to victory,” he said.

“We must remember that the next general election could get messy. There is the third force – Warisan, Muda and various NGOs – coming forward to contest.

What the appointment of 98 female judges to Egypt's State Council means for women's rights

[Image: egypt-female-jud_hpMain_20211021-214933_16x9_992.jpg]

Seventy-two years of Egyptian women's rights activism paid off this week as the State Council, an important independent judiciary body in the country, appointed 98 female judges for the first time.

Iman Sherif, one of the appointed judges, described the move as "historic" during the swearing-in ceremony, saying she was over the moon, according to state-run Al-Ahram Newspaper.

"We pledged to live up to our responsibilities. I can't describe my happiness," she added.

"It is very important, not only to see the long resistance came up with this result, but also how much it means to the new generation," Nehad Abu El Komsan, head of the Egyptian Center for Women's Rights, told ABC News. "It is a step ahead for the younger generation to believe there can be no restrictions in their dreams."

The recent appointment of 98 judges to Egypt's State Council has considerable implications.
