The cryptocurrency conundrum – Rajan Navaratnam

“Who to himself is law, no law doth need, offends no law, and is a king indeed” – George Chapman

DEPUTY Finance Minister I Datuk Mohd Shahar Abdullah had recently stated that Malaysia has no intention of legalising cryptocurrency such as bitcoins due to a myriad of circumstances such as price fluctuations.

His statement had come about after the Communications and Multimedia Ministry had put forth the proposal that cryptocurrency ought to be recognised as legal tender.

The debate on cryptocurrency as the future of money was again ignited and had propelled into the international spotlight after Russia invaded Ukraine, raising questions over whether cryptocurrency would be used to circumvent sanctions imposed against Russia by the European Union and Western nations.

From a Malaysian perspective, whether cryptocurrency ought to be recognised as legal tender is for the government to decide on what is best for Malaysia. However, whether cryptocurrency is regarded as legal tender is not cardinal – but instead the government would have to act swiftly to enact and implement specific laws to deal with the rapid growth and use of cryptocurrency globally.

Anwar: ‘Formidable’ majority shelved over my conditions on judicial intervention
Posted by: superadmin - 04-19-2022, 09:24 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR – During the political turmoil of 2020, which was triggered by the infamous Sheraton Move, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had claimed he possessed a “strong, formidable and convincing majority” to form a government.

Today, despite being mocked over his claim, the opposition leader maintained that his announcement back then still holds true, seeing that the support letters from the party chiefs involved are in his possession.

He added that these documents will be revealed at a later date.

Although he had “the numbers” to assume office as prime minister, Anwar indicated that his bid to wrest Putrajaya was shelved due to some “conditions” that were laid out to the politicians involved at the time.

He said there was an agreement on the matter but the conditions that Pakatan Harapan (PH) had set could not be compromised.

“We rejected shallow racial policies, we rejected corruption, and we must follow the governance and leadership (of PH).

“There was also another condition to prevent the hijacking of the government, which had happened before,” the Port Dickson MP said during a special interview with The Vibes, Malaysiakini, and Sinar Harian at his office in Bukit Gasing, yesterday afternoon.

PETALING JAYA: With marathon woman Karen Loh Kher Heem, 52, the wonders never cease, just as when she battled cervical cancer and kept running.

Her health ordeal merely slowed, but never stopped, her insatiable hunger for running.

The former lawyer, who was diagnosed with cervical cancer in July 2017, returned to running two months after her surgery and ran up to three kilometres during her chemotherapy.

Upon being declared cancer-free, she took part in the 2019 London Marathon, adding to her exploits at major marathons in Berlin (2013), Chicago (2014), Sydney (2016/2018) and Shenzhen (December 2017/2019).

Malaysia’s total trade soars to new high of RM236.6 bil in March: DoSM
Posted by: superadmin - 04-18-2022, 04:31 PM - Forum: Business. Economy and Investment - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia’s total trade recorded a double-digit growth of 27.3% year-on-year (y-o-y) in March 2022 to reach a new high of RM236.6 billion, the Statistics Department (DOSM) said.

Export and import values in March once again broke the record for all-time highs at RM131.6 billion and RM104.9 billion, respectively.

Chief statistician Datuk Seri Mohd Uzir Mahidin said Malaysia’s imports surpassed the RM100 billion mark for the first time ever, in line with the surge in intermediate goods, signifying a positive sign of domestic economic activity.

He said trade surplus widened by 10.3% from RM24.2 billion in the preceding year to RM26.7 billion, marking the 23rd consecutive months of trade surplus since May 2020.

“Malaysia’s exports accelerated by 25.4% from RM105.0 billion to RM131.6 billion, surpassing the RM100 billion mark for the seventh consecutive month since September 2021.

“Export value growth in March 2022 was supported by both domestic exports and re-exports. Domestic exports were valued at RM106.9 billion, contributing 81.2% to total exports, picking up strongly by 22.8% y-o-y.

“Meanwhile, re-exports amounted to RM24.7 billion, expanded by 38.0% compared to March 2021,” he said in a statement, today.

Report: Rafizi tells PKR and Pakatan ‘not to daydream about easily retaining Selangor

Report: Rafizi tells PKR and Pakatan ‘not to daydream about easily retaining Selangor’ in GE15

[Image: 2703_20220326AZ1.jpeg][/align

KUALA LUMPUR, April 18 — PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli has warned his party, PKR, and its coalition, Pakatan Harapan (PH), to not be overconfident about retaining control of Selangor for another term in the next general election (GE15).

He also reminded members of PKR that since the ‘Sheraton Move’ and the fall of the PH government, the Opposition coalition has suffered a series of losses in both state polls and by-elections.

“If the leadership of PH and PKR are still daydreaming about easily retaining Selangor, I would suggest that we splash water on their faces.

“If we were defeated only for the first time, it would be OK, we can do better the second time. But we have lost four times!” he was quoted as saying by Free Malaysia Today (FMT) at a campaign event for the party’s internal elections next month.

SWIFT not irreplaceable, but substitution requires considerable preparation: former PBC chief

[Image: 616b7155-fb85-4cf7-aec2-b2c26c587eb5.jpeg]

The international financial transaction system known as SWIFT is not irreplaceable, but replacing it will require a great deal of preparation, given SWIFT's efficiency and scope, Zhou Xiaochuan, former head of China's central bank, said on Saturday at an annual financial forum in Beijing.

Speaking at the 2022 Tsinghua PBCSF Global Finance Forum in Beijing, the former governor of the People's Bank of China (PBC) said that cross-border payments in global trade can theoretically be made without going through SWIFT. If SWIFT is widely used as a tool for sanctions, others will surely find other messaging conduits to continue doing trade, he said.

Global financial payment or messaging systems, should they slide into some "Cold War" patterns, would bring damage to everyone, Zhou commented.

The West's adoption of a financial "nuclear option" of using SWIFT to sanction Russia is a wake-up call for China's financial development. "We must get prepared," tapping the digital economy to ensure financial and trade security, Liu Liange, chairman of Bank of China, said at the forum.

Mariupol capture could be ‘a crucial turning point’ for Ukraine-Russia conflict
Posted by: superadmin - 04-18-2022, 10:05 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

As Russian claimed that its troops had cleared the urban area of Mariupol, the strategically important port city in southeastern Ukraine, setting a deadline for Ukraine troops in the city to surrender, some experts considered that the battle could be seen as a crucial turning point for the Ukraine-Russia conflict that would have last for two months. Taking Mariupol will help lay the foundation for Russia's next phased military operations in the Donbass and taking the port city could create a land corridor from Lugansk to Donetsk to Crimea.

The US and NATO's continuous shipments of weapons to Ukraine would only lead to unpredictable consequences, prolonging the Russia-Ukraine conflict and fanning the flames, which will also affect the European security framework in a long run, experts warned.

Russia gave holdout Ukrainian soldiers an ultimatum on Sunday to lay down their arms in Mariupol, which Moscow said its forces had nearly completely controlled in what would be its biggest capture of the conflict that last nearly two months, Reuters reported.
