Review ban on gatherings during Melaka polls, Bersih 2.0 tells Khairy |

KUALA LUMPUR – The Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections (Bersih 2.0) is calling on Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin to reconsider the total ban on physical gatherings for the upcoming Melaka election.
It expressed concern that, as state media agencies have a tendency to give wider coverage to parties aligned with the ruling coalition, opposition candidates will be placed at a disadvantage.
Instead, the election watchdog suggested the government implement stricter enforcement of standard operating procedures (SOPs) under the National Recovery Plan by increasing the number of enforcers during campaigning.
It said any violators should be fined or prosecuted under the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988, regardless of their political affiliations.
“While we acknowledge that the risk is real and precautions are necessary, such a total ban is a suppression of all candidates’ right to campaign and express themselves, the voters’ right to make an informed decision by hearing from the candidates and, ultimately, is a suppression of democracy itself,” it said in a statement today.

Talks underway to avoid three-cornered fights in Melaka, says PAS leader |

SHAH ALAM: Discussions to avoid three-cornered fights among PAS, Umno and Bersatu in the Melaka state election in November are underway, according to PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man.
He said there should be a consensus among the three parties, especially on the distribution of seats, to minimise clashes.
“If we can’t avoid (clashes) in one or two (seats), we have to face them. But at least there should not be too many three-cornered contests as it will be detrimental to all parties.
“Therefore, we must have consensus, InsyaAllah there will be a way out,” he told reporters after officiating the PAS Selangor building in Section 13 here last night.
Tuan Ibrahim said the three parties needed to focus on winning seats they had not won before in Melaka.

In plural societies, everything’s clouded by race, says Nazir |

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia’s plural society is by nature “difficult to manage”, according to former CIMB Group chairman Nazir Razak, who says the problem has led to matters of race clouding other issues and the push for reforms.
Nazir said that the problem of racial and religious narratives holding back reforms is not unique to Malaysia, and is a speed bump that many similar, young democracies have faced.
“What we have seen all over the world is that in plural societies, when democracy tries to evolve, it has difficulty because every reform or improvement gets attacked by vested interests, and the attack becomes effective because it is invariably wrapped in race and religious narratives.
“We saw this with Najib’s (Najib Razak) proposal for a needs-based affirmative action back in 2009. That was major, and it was killed at the beginning,” he said, referring to the policy initiative of his elder brother Najib when he was prime minister.
”And then we had fairly benign reforms, like under PH we had the (recognition of the) UEC (Unified Examination Certificate), you had the desire to sign ICERD (International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination) for instance, pretty benign reforms, but still they could not be done as they were attacked because one community felt they were disadvantaged.”

Lessons from Bangladesh’s religious violence |

I am pained whenever people fight and kill each other, and I am pained now by what is happening in Bangladesh.
Violence in the name of religion has taken the lives of at least six people and made hundreds homeless in Bangladesh.
The former Bangladesh cricket team captain Mashrafe Mortaza put it well in a Facebook post soon after the attacks began: “Saw two defeats last night. One was Bangladesh cricket team’s (where Bangladesh lost to Scotland in an ICC T20 World Cup match), and that hurt. The other was a defeat for the whole of Bangladesh, which tore my heart to pieces.”
Mashrafe, now a Member of Parliament, also posted a picture of a burning village, according to reports in the Bangladesh dailies.

PETALING JAYA: The Kelantan PAS Ulama Council has urged the party’s central leadership to “expand the culture of mature and prosperous politics” across the political divide, so that there will be only straight fights at the next general election (GE15).
The move was among 10 motions approved by the council today at its meeting in Bachok. Among them is a motion to form a task force targeted at wooing new voters, aged 18 and above, to draw their interest to the country and religion.
The 10 motions were adopted at the council’s 50th muktamar (assembly), which was attended by 115 state delegates, Bernama reported.
Council chief Hassan Mohamood said that the task force was needed as there would be many new voters aged 18 and above at the coming general election.
A new political scenario would also emerge, with a sharp increase in the number of voters in parliamentary and state constituencies throughout the country.

GEORGE TOWN – The Penang PKR-DAP spat has ended, said state PKR chairman Muhammad Bakhtiar Wan Chik.
Both parties were jostling among themselves for credit over the management of the pandemic.
“The issue has been put to rest as the Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition’s cordial relationship continues as ‘Big, Strong and Friendly’,” said Bakhtiar, adding that it is a misunderstanding and perception of the leaders based on how the issue was expressed.
“Our relations are cordial. It is always cordial and never has any problem. We had the state PH meeting last Friday and the matter was not raised during the meeting. The strengthening of the coalition is more important than the conflict between DAP and PKR. It is a misunderstanding.
“It is a difference of opinion and perception as somebody is taking the credit for the decline of Covid-19 pandemic cases in the state. It is like the changing of the health minister with the science, technology and innovation minister; nobody is taking credit for anybody’s work,” he said.

PETALING JAYA: Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) will contest in the next general election (GE15) but it will reduce the number of its candidates to a “realistic” level, the party’s chairman Dr Michael Jeyakumar Devaraj said.
During the last general election in 2018, the party contested in five parliamentary and 12 state seats and did not win any.
“We had won two seats in the 13th general election in 2013. Here, we need to understand that people voted for us because we represented the opposition and all the voters wanted was to remove Barisan Nasional.

PETALING JAYA: Perikatan Nasional and Muafakat Nasional can win the upcoming Melaka polls by a landslide if Umno and Bersatu are able to put aside their differences and work with each other, says a PAS leader.
In a Facebook post, PAS strategic director Khairuddin Aman Razali told of a “winning formula” proposed by deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man, where incumbents get to defend their seats.
