The case for build-to-rent housing in Malaysia
Posted by: superadmin - 09-22-2023, 10:31 AM - Forum: Business. Economy and Investment - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: A steady increase in property prices over an extended period of time has put home purchasing beyond the reach of many.

To this end, developers are expected to cash in by offering more build-to-rent (BTR) properties in the market, according to industry stakeholders.

The BTR concept is still relatively new in Malaysia but its potential as a growing segment of the property market is not lost on developers.

UEM Sunrise Bhd CEO Sufian Abdullah said changing lifestyles and appetites in the local market could also drive the growth of BTR.

Muda loses more than it gains by ‘attacking’ unity govt, says analyst

PETALING JAYA: Muda president Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman’s broadside against the unity government at the beginning of this week will only backfire and cause his party to lose support, analysts said.

Akademi Nusantara’s Azmi Hassan said the Muar MP’s latest swipe against the unity government was not a “smart move”, adding that his party is bound to lose more than it gains.

He said Muda’s political survival still hinges on support from Pakatan Harapan, the biggest component of Anwar Ibrahim’s unity government.

Senator calls on govt to enact anti-discrimination law
Posted by: superadmin - 09-21-2023, 07:04 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR: A senator has proposed the enactment of laws related to discrimination, such as the Anti-Discrimination Act, to ensure harmony among the community.

Senator Mujahid Yusof Rawa said further discussions needed to be held to ensure that the drafting of the Act would take into account the country’s plural society.

The former religious affairs minister also suggested that the government deal more firmly with the issues of racial and religious hate speech by introducing an anti-hate speech law.

“Without a specific law, racial and religious issues will continue to be played out, which may ultimately divide the society,” he said when debating a motion on the 12th Malaysia Plan’s mid-term review at the Dewan Negara.

SINGAPORE: Singapore police have seized or frozen more than US$1.76 billion worth of assets in one of the biggest money laundering cases ever uncovered in the city state, local media reported today.

Authorities had seized assets worth nearly US$750 million in sweeping raids against a suspected international money laundering ring last month.

During the operation police arrested 10 foreign nationals – from China, Turkey, Cambodia, Cyprus and Vanuatu – members of a group suspected to be laundering proceeds from overseas criminal activity including scams and online gambling.

Bank accounts, cash, documents with information on virtual assets, properties, vehicles, and luxury items such as bags and watches were seized during the raids.

Foreign firms ‘expanding’ from China to M’sia to realign supply chains: Zafrul

NEW YORK – Malaysia is preparing to reap from a new “window of opportunity” posed by multinational companies that are “expanding” certain operations from China due to recently imposed trade restrictions impacting them there.

Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz today said two major firms related to the electrical and electronics (E&E) sector have confirmed plans to invest in Malaysia.

“Quite a number of companies that are involved at the front-end, and not just back-end of E&E operations, are ‘expanding’ (from China) to realign their supply chains,” he said after meeting some companies’ representative here today.

“Malaysia is seen as a friendly country. So we are benefitting from this,” he said to Malaysian editors and journalists who are in New York to cover the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) this week.

Don’t blame current govt for our problems: farmer
Posted by: superadmin - 09-20-2023, 11:03 AM - Forum: Business. Economy and Investment - No Replies

PETALING JAYA – The food production crisis and the high price of essentials plaguing the country are due to the changing climate and the high cost of importing fertilisers and other farming essentials.

Farmer Zaheer Zechariah said the most profitable time to plant is from January to September, but heavy rains and cloud cover have an impact on the yields.

He said for him, the present weather conditions had hurt his farm’s yield, compared to the last one to three years ago when the farm yield had been much higher.

“The present government is not to be blamed for the problems faced by farmers today. Governments over the last nine years had been warned about global warming but had ignored it.

“They had neither prepared farmers nor taken proactive measures to deal with the problem.”

He said rice supply is now becoming an issue as India has banned its exports and Vietnam is slowly cutting down on its exports.

He added all this was due to the unpredictable weather pattern, which is hurting yield and production.

Analysts play down Dr M’s advisory role in PN’s ‘SG4’
Posted by: superadmin - 09-20-2023, 10:42 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: a9bf0eb5-5_mahathir_mohamad_fmt_moganraj_05032023.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s role as an adviser to a grouping of four PAS-led states will not have any bearing on Muhyiddin Yassin’s standing as Perikatan Nasional chairman, analysts said.

Akademi Nusantara’s Azmi Hassan said Mahathir would merely be an economic adviser to the group, known as the “state government four” or “SG4”.

This, he said, would be similar to the role played by Anwar Ibrahim in the Selangor government previously.

Azmi believes PAS merely wants to use the former prime minister to its benefit to give the state governments of Perlis, Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu, which it governs, some economic credence and clout.
