NEW DELHI: Alphabet Inc’s Google will begin to make its Chromebook laptops in India, the latest among global tech companies to expand assembly in the key growth market.

Google is partnering with HP Inc to manufacture Chromebooks in the South Asian country, Alphabet chief executive officer Sundar Pichai said Monday on X, formerly known as Twitter.

The move will help Google boost supply in India and compete more effectively with Windows computers from companies such as Dell Technologies Inc and Asustek Computer Inc. It’s also another win for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s US$2 billion incentive plan to have tech giants make India their production base.

The country of 1.4 billion people has been expanding its electronics manufacturing sector as companies diversify production beyond China amid growing Washington-Beijing tensions.

Ramasamy: “It’s not just about brain drain but the stifling of talent formation”
Posted by: superadmin - 10-02-2023, 01:56 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: P-Ramasamy-Penang-Deputy-Chief-Minister-...19-FMT.jpg]

A FORMER DAP leader said while Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has spoken about the brain drain issue and ways to overcome it by empowering the Talent Corporation Malaysia Berhad (TalentCorp) nothing concrete and serious is done in overcoming the loss of talents in Malaysia.

He said while brain drain should be stemmed by rendering the educational system more equitable by way of removing obstacles in the form of non-Malay participation, bringing back Malaysians who have gone abroad seems to be a “Herculean” task.

“How do you entice Malaysians who have migrated by giving them opportunities when the colossal elephant in the room – ethnic discrimination of the non-Malays – remains [unaddressed]?” the former Penang deputy chief minister asked.

“Opportunities denied to the non-Malays in the name of Malay hegemony have cost the country dearly in terms of the loss of talents and expertise.

“This is the reason why there is significant level of talent shortage in the country so much that high-tech multinational companies might find it difficult to locate in the country.”

Buoyant dollar pushes yen to within striking distance of 150
Posted by: superadmin - 10-02-2023, 10:49 AM - Forum: Business, Economy and Investment - No Replies

SINGAPORE: The dollar kicked off the last quarter of the year on the front foot on Monday as the prospect of higher-for-longer US rates provided solid support, pushing the yen to an 11-month low.

Currency moves were subdued in early Asia trade with parts of Australia out for a holiday and China away for its Golden Week, though analysts said a narrowly-averted US government shutdown could bring some relief to markets.

The yen slid to a roughly 11-month low of 149.74 per dollar, as the Japanese currency continued its slow-but-steady decline toward the 150 mark, a level which some see as a line in the sand that would spur Japanese authorities to intervene in the currency market as they did last year.

“Fear of intervention by the BOJ above the 146 level has come and gone and the currency is now above 148 to the dollar and the BOJ remains absent from currency markets,” said Olivier d’Assier, Axioma’s head of applied research for APAC.

PETALING JAYA: The education and health ministries will be among those which will receive the biggest allocations in Budget 2024, said Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

Anwar made the announcement at the launch of the Madani medical scheme and the Madani Afiat programme in Ipoh this morning, Bernama reported.

Budget 2024 will be tabled in the Dewan Rakyat on Oct 13.

The education ministry received RM55.2 billion in the revised 2023 federal government budget which Anwar tabled on Feb 24.

Meanwhile, the health ministry was allocated RM36.3 billion, which included nearly RM3 billion for the appointment of over 1,500 permanent and contract health workers.
