Palm Oil: Revisiting a misunderstood resource for health and sustainability
Posted by: superadmin - 10-05-2023, 09:03 AM - Forum: Business. Economy and Investment - No Replies

AS WE peel back the layers of rhetoric and misinformation, it becomes clear that we often rely on simplistic labels such as “good”, “bad”, “sustainable” or “harmful” to make quick judgments about the world around us.

Similarly, palm oil has faced much criticism in public conversations and is affected by this practice.

People often focus on the practices around palm oil production rather than the crop itself which by current standards and regulations is sustainably produced.

However, it’s worth noting that, according to current standards and regulations like the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), palm oil can be sustainably produced. In fact, Malaysia has its own industry-leading standard, the Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil (MSPO) certification scheme, thus underscoring its commitment to sustainable practices.

While some concerns are warranted, there are undoubtedly issues that merit both discussion and action. However, most narratives pit environmental protection against agricultural profitability, leaving little room for a thorough analysis of palm oil’s essential benefits such as its health-promoting properties.

Yet, as with any complex issue, these simplistic labels hardly capture the full scope of palm oil’s impact – both beneficial and detrimental. In a world that is quick to condemn, perhaps it’s time to take a step back and re-evaluate our perceptions of this common resource.

This is particularly significant considering rampant misinformation about palm oil in the health sector.

Coming from a background in immunology and having spent 25 years researching immune therapies for cancer and the role of natural compounds in health, I’m not just academically curious about palm oil. I’m personally invested.

Ananda Krishnan’s Astro hits rock bottom, battered by setbacks
Posted by: superadmin - 10-05-2023, 08:37 AM - Forum: Business. Economy and Investment - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: The proverb “it never rains but it pours” is probably an apt description of recent setbacks that have pummelled Astro Malaysia Holdings Bhd, the pay-TV operator controlled by reclusive tycoon Ananda Krishnan.

Its shares plummeted to an all-time low of 40 sen yesterday, driven by disappointing results for its second quarter ended July 31, 2023 (Q2 FY2024), a murky dividend outlook, and closure of its home shopping venture Go Shop.

Over the past 18 months, the media and entertainment holding company’s market capitalisation has seen a huge drop in tandem with its dwindling subscriber base.

Its share price has tumbled 61.17% from its peak of RM1.03 at the end of March last year, wiping some RM3.29 billion from its market capitalisation.

Move Mat Sabu out of agriculture and food security, PM told
Posted by: superadmin - 10-05-2023, 08:30 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Two analysts have called for Mohamad Sabu to be replaced as the agriculture and food security minister, amid talk of an impending Cabinet reshuffle.

Universiti Malaysia Sabah’s Lee Kuok Tiung said Mohamad proved he was not up to the task for claiming that the price of rice in Malaysia was the cheapest in the region amid pressing issues about food security and the rising cost of raw materials.

Mohamad, commonly known as Mat Sabu, had come to his conclusion by comparing prices in ringgit, which Lee said showed the minister did not fully comprehend the situation.

Lee said comparisons with foreign nations must take into account the strength of their currency.

Anwar’s green agenda can outperform Mahathir’s grey vision
Posted by: superadmin - 10-05-2023, 08:10 AM - Forum: Business. Economy and Investment - No Replies

Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s economic blueprint marked a distinct push for mega projects, but has consistently proven problematic for Malaysia.

Over time, it became increasingly evident that these mega projects were more beneficial to a privileged inner circle rather than the Malaysian community at large.

Among his more controversial pursuits was an undue emphasis on highway developments. His car-centric approach primarily benefited toll collectors, casting aside the broader advantages of a more sustainable transport model.

Now, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has the opportunity to move away from Mahathir’s short-sighted vision and offer a much better economic model by embracing the overarching advantages of more innovative transport methods.

‘Cabinet reshuffle likely tomorrow, Zahid, Zaliha included in line-up’
Posted by: superadmin - 10-03-2023, 04:14 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: 2022127-anwar_ibrahim_at_first_cabinet_m...o_dept.JPG]

KUALA LUMPUR – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is expected to announce a cabinet reshuffle tomorrow, nearly eleven months after the formation of this government in November last year.

Sources close to Putrajaya told Getaran, The Vibes’ Bahasa Malaysia sister portal, that the important announcement is expected to be made after the post-cabinet meeting.

According to information obtained by the sources, the matter needs to be announced before Anwar leaves for an official visit to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) this Thursday.
“Previously, some said it would just be some small ‘changes’ but from the information I got, it is going to be a major overhaul,” said a source.

According to the sources, the move will involve several portfolios and major ministries, including the Home Ministry, the Human Resources Ministry, the Health Ministry and the Youth and Sports Ministry.

PAS must apologise for humiliating M’sian Chinese with “Apek seluar pendek” slur

PAS must apologise for dishonouring Islam, humiliating M’sian Chinese with “Apek seluar pendek” slur
[Image: MGF04092022_MUKTAMAR-HARI-KE-4-11-copy-681x454.jpg.webp]

I WISH to take to task PAS on the incident of one of its leaders disparaging our Chinese community in his use of the derogatory term apek seluar pendek which means a “Chinese wearing shorts.”

According to a news report in Malaysiakini, Pahang Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail has called out his Kedah counterpart Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor for disparaging the Chinese community and creating uneasiness in the Malay community just to canvass for votes in the Pelangai by-election.

Sanusi is no stranger to vulgarity in his statements which has made him – unfortunately – the most famous Malay politician at this time.

It is sad that Malays love this kind of foul-mouthed politician but they are used to this kind of culture from UMNO long before PAS itself discovers this effective method to popularity at the expense of the teachings of Islam, nation-building and the history of Chinese-Muslims being the protectors of Islam during the Cheng Ho-Parameswara Melaka times.

Saravanan back, different role for Hannah in reshuffle
Posted by: superadmin - 10-03-2023, 11:33 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: 111d60a9-m-saravanan-hannah-yeoh-collage-031023-1.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: M Saravanan of MIC and Hannah Yeoh of DAP are the latest names to have cropped up in current talks about an impending Cabinet reshuffle.

Saravanan could be making a return to the Cabinet, while Yeoh could be moved out of youth and sports to another ministry.

The changes would be made for political reasons, according to a well-placed political source.

Saravanan, who is deputy president of MIC, would be included as a means of shoring up government support from the Indian community, after an apparent swing in Indian votes to the opposition at the six state elections in August.

Govt to ensure EV ownership available to all: Tengku Zafrul
Posted by: superadmin - 10-02-2023, 08:46 PM - Forum: Business. Economy and Investment - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR – The government will ensure that electric vehicle (EV) ownership is available to all income groups through targeted subsidies and financial assistance, said Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz.

The investment, trade and industry minister said the government is also ramping up efforts to expand and enhance the country’s EV charging infrastructure.

“As we look to the future and the upcoming Budget 2024, our focus remains on inclusivity, aligning with the Madani Economy Framework,” he said at the launch of the Tesla Centre launch in Cyberjaya, today.

He noted that the implementation of policies and initiatives has had a positive impact on the local automotive industry, reflecting the government’s commitment to developing a holistic EV ecosystem in the country.

The number of registered EVs increased to over 3,400 units in 2022 and exceeded 7,500 units by September 2023, compared to an average of 300 units in previous years.
