PETALING JAYA: Umno members have turned their attention inward towards a party clean-up after having seen the party navigate through an impasse between Perikatan Nasional (PN) and Pakatan Harapan (PH) over who would form a government after the general election (GE15).
“There’s a need for us to clean house. There are still some among us who are pro-Bersatu,” said a high-ranking Umno leader.
Bersatu, which mainly comprises former Umno members, is the dominant party in PN with Muhyiddin Yassin as its president.
Earlier this week, Muhyiddin said he had statutory declarations (SDs) from 10 Barisan Nasional (BN) MPs backing him to become prime minister.
“All 10 retracted their SDs,” said the Umno leader, “but it’s too late, they’ve shown their hand. We know they are not loyal to the party.”

PETALING JAYA: Kelantan PAS has denied allegations that people returning to vote in Kelantan in the general election (GE15) had to take an oath stating they voted for the party before being given cash to cover their travel expenses.
This comes as a video went viral on social media showing a man in a room with some youths. He was heard calling them out by name individually and allegedly asking them to swear in the name of Allah that they voted for PAS before handing them the money.

New allies PH, BN told to avoid Padang Serai clash |

PETALING JAYA: Since Pakatan Harapan and Barisan Nasional are partners in the new federal government, one of them should give up the contest for the Padang Serai seat, an analyst said.
Fauzi Abdul Hamid of Universiti Sains Malaysia said Perikatan Nasional, now firmly in the opposition, would gain from a split in votes if PH and BN clashed against each other.
Candidates from PH, BN, PN, and Pejuang and an independent are contesting the parliamentary election, which was deferred after PH candidate M. Karupaiya died just two days before the Nov 19 general election.
Fauzi reminded PN and PH that their defeats in the Melaka and Johor polls last year showed how those friendly at the federal level but went against each other at the state polls fared poorly.
“The Padang Serai contest is a test of the sincerity of the BN and PH unity government. Why bother telling the rakyat you’re fighting for a better government at the federal level but fight each other for a federal seat?

Nurul Izzah, Syed Saddiq call for cops to release Twitter user @bumilangit from remand for unearthing hate speech online
KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 25 — Several politicians have demanded the police release Twitter user Zulfadzli Halim, who had exposed racially and religiously divisive content on social media throughout the 15th general election.
PKR’s Nurul Izzah Anwar said that the authorities should be careful when arresting or making allegations against the public.
“It is our shared responsibility to bring negative, extremist and racial campaigning materials to the attention of the authorities... Justice for @bumilangit,” she said in a post, referring to Zulfadzli’s Twitter account.
Meanwhile, Malaysia United Democratic Alliance (Muda) president Syed Saddiq Abdul Rahman called for solidarity with Zulfadzli.

PETALING JAYA: Pakatan Harapan (PH) cannot afford to take Perikatan Nasional (PN) lightly despite holding the lion’s share of Dewan Rakyat seats, says the director of a political risk consultancy.
BowerGroupAsia’s (BGA) Adib Zalkapli said PH cannot consider many of its seats to be safe anymore as they won with less than 50% of votes.
“PH has a new opponent in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur,” Adib said at a forum on the general election.

KUALA LUMPUR: In the Dewan Rakyat, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim will have to contend with a strengthened Islamic party that espouses a stricter interpretation of shariah law, a challenge to the Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman’s vision of an inclusive society.
Anwar will likely face challenges from PAS, which emerged as one of the big winners in Malaysia’s election last Saturday, risking deeper divisions in the diverse, multi-religious country.
Anwar addressed race and religion in his first news conference as prime minister, promising to uphold Islam as the official religion of the country and the rights of the ethnic Malay majority, while also safeguarding the rights of all.

THE Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd (KTMB) workers union has called upon Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to reappoint Anthony Loke Siew Fook as the transport minister.
According to union president Abdul Razak Md Hassan, the DAP secretary-general can improve the country’s public transport system due to his good track record of helming the ministry when Pakatan Harapan was in power from May 2018 to March 2020.
“We believe with Loke back at the helm of the ministry, the public transport system will benefit and be made more efficient,” he was reported as saying by FMT.
“Compare this to what is happening now (when) people are complaining about the entire transport network, including KTMB and services managed by other operators.”
Abdul Razak further said Anwar should consider the group’s request for the benefit of the entire public transport network, especially for KTMB – which is currently facing constraints in delivering the “best service” to its passengers.
He further pointed out that the KTMB workers’ union is also confident that Loke will pay attention to the welfare of workers and KTMB as a whole. – Nov 25, 2022

Chinese brain researchers find evolutionary clue in elderly who stay sharp and have higher quality of life in old age
- More developed frontal lobes equated with maintaining superior cognitive performance, possibly a result of natural selection in human evolution
- Community-based brain research that started in 2008 found some elderly people aged more slowly, leading to cognitive health project
A group of Chinese researchers has found that having more developed frontal lobes keeps the mind sharp in some people as they age, and is possibly a result of natural selection in human evolution.
Their study looked at how the brain structure of older adults with superior cognitive performance differed from those with mild cognitive impairment (MCI).
The study, which was published in the peer-reviewed Chinese journal Science Bulletin on November 11, found that people who had successful cognitive ageing (SCA) had a better preserved brain structure in the frontal region, while those with mild cognitive impairment showed structural deterioration in another part, the temporal region.
