Luna the sun bear cub’s birth a pleasant surprise

SANDAKAN – On May 20 this year, the world’s only conservation centre for sun bears, the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre (BSBCC) in Sepilok, here, was shocked over a pleasant surprise.

One of its female captive bears, Bintang, had given birth to a female infant bear.

Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre (BSBCC) founder Dr Wong Siew Te said the birth was completely unexpected. But it was bound to happen as the rescued bears at the centres have grown older. They are also kept mixed at a compound that is surrounded by the forest.

It was the first sun bear’s birth in captivity at the centre in the last 10 years.

The cub, later named "Luna" by supporters of BSBCC on Facebook, was at first taken care of by Bintang.

Don’t take Zahid’s word on Muafakat as law: Idris
Posted by: superadmin - 10-19-2021, 06:25 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR – PAS is still awaiting the Umno Supreme Council’s decision on their political cooperation under Muafakat Nasional (MN), said PAS vice-president Idris Ahmad.

He insisted that Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s desire for his party to contest solo in the Melaka election should not be accepted as an official decision.

“As of now, the Umno Supreme Council has not said such a thing. Therefore, we will only depend on the official decision. Don’t divide us,” he said today when met by press members after attending a Maulidur Rasul celebration in the capital today.

The minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) said his party’s main focus now is to ensure that Pakatan Harapan does not return to power in the state.

The MN political alliance between Umno and PAS was formed in September 2019.

Last Tuesday, Zahid raised questions over the Umno-PAS cooperation under MN as the Melaka election looms.

Why didn’t you object to Najib’s passport application, AGC asked
Posted by: superadmin - 10-19-2021, 06:09 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: The Center to Combat Corruption and Cronyism (C4) has urged the attorney-general’s chambers (AGC) and the prosecution team to explain why there was no objection to Najib Razak’s application for temporary custody of his passport.

In a statement, C4 said it was appalled that the former prime minister has been allowed to travel abroad, especially since he had already been convicted for corruption and criminal breach of trust.

It was reported yesterday that the Court of Appeal had allowed the temporary release of Najib’s impounded passport to enable him to visit his daughter Nooryana Najwa, who is due to give birth in Singapore.

A three-member bench chaired by Kamaludin Md Said unanimously agreed to allow the application after hearing submissions from Najib’s lawyer Muhammad Shafee Abdullah.

Deputy public prosecutor Mohd Fairuz Johari did not raise any objection.

“There are real reasons for concern about flight risk, as he (Najib) is appealing (against) his conviction and continues to face more daunting charges in court, all related to 1MDB and its subsidiaries. He is also appealing against the RM1.69 billion in fines to be paid to the Inland Revenue Board (LHDN).

“In addition, the 1MDB scandal was again named in the Pandora Papers, and linked to Russian and Indian frauds, signalling no end to this gargantuan financial heist, in which he is a central figure,” it said.

Israel has approved a budget of some 5 billion shekels ($1.5 billion) to be used to prepare the military for a potential strike against Iran’s nuclear program, Channel 12 reported Monday.

The NIS 5 billion budget is made up of NIS 3 billion from the previous budget and an additional NIS 2 billion from the next budget slated to be approved by the government in November,

It includes funds for various types of aircraft, intelligence-gathering drones and unique armaments needed for such an attack, which would have to target heavily fortified underground sites, the unsourced report said.

[Image: FMT-civil-servants-penjawat-awam-05052019-19.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: Civil servants who fail to get vaccinated against Covid-19 by Nov 1 could face the sack, said the Public Service Department (JPA).

Previously, JPA had only warned of “disciplinary action” for federal civil servants who were not fully vaccinated by Nov 1.

In a Bernama report today, JPA director-general Mohd Khairul Adib Abd Rahman said failure to comply with the department head’s instructions to get vaccinated on or after Nov 1 “may result in disciplinary action or termination of service”.

The report cited a JPA circular uploaded to its website yesterday.

KUALA LUMPUR: The High Court will hear submissions by the government and three others if it can decide a suit against the existence of vernacular schools without calling witnesses.

Lawyer T Gunaseelan said Judge Mohd Nazlan Mohd Ghazali would hear parties via a virtual proceeding before a ruling is made.

“Parties have filed written submissions and bundles of authorities. We will make oral submissions on Friday afternoon,” he said.

Gunaseelan, who is appearing for the Malaysian Chinese Language Council, Malaysia Tamil Neri Kalagam and Gabungan Persatuan Pelajar Tamil Malaysia, said the dispute could be determined by merely filing documents,

Johor PKR man slams Melaka PH as ‘opportunistic, irresponsible’

PETALING JAYA: A PKR MP from Johor has hit out at the Melaka Pakatan Harapan leadership over the political crisis in the state, accusing the coalition’s state chapter of being “opportunistic and irresponsible”.

In a statement, Pasir Gudang MP Hassan Abdul Karim said he had disagreed with Melaka PH’s attitude from the start of the crisis.

“Melaka PH was opportunistic and irresponsible, dragging out this crisis until the Melaka state assembly was dissolved and now to a state election.

“I also believe that the central PH leadership failed to manage this crisis well and failed to give the right guidance and leadership. Now, what is happening in Melaka is a fiasco,” he said.

MELAKA, Oct 18 — The distribution of seats involving PAS for the Melaka state election is expected to be known in a week’s time at the latest after discussions are held between PAS, Umno and Bersatu.

Melaka PAS commissioner Datuk Kamarudin Sidek said the discussions, to be managed by the PAS Central Technical Committee, were aimed at preventing more than two-cornered fights, thus harming the chances of all the component parties under the auspices of Perikatan Nasional (PN) and Muafakat Nasional (MN).

“PAS is in MN and PN, which also include Umno and Bersatu the collaborative relationship among all component parties is still intact. So, the issue of seat distribution for the Melaka state election should involve all parties concerned.

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang held a video conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Monday, and said China hopes the upcoming new administration of Germany would maintain a positive and pragmatic policy toward China to reinforce the mainstream of cooperation of China-Germany ties.

This is the latest interaction between Chinese leaders with Merkel after Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Merkel by video link on October 13 and praised Merkel's contributions to China-Germany relations and China-EU ties.

Li told Merkel that the two sides should keep using the inter-governmental consultation mechanism to expand and strengthen cooperation, and China is willing to work with Germany and other countries to jointly deal with climate change and strengthen international cooperation to fight the COVID-19 pandemic.

China will be more open, and hopefully the two sides can remain open to each other, to safeguard the rules-based multilateral trade system together and the stability of the global industry and supply chains, Li said.
