PKR must ditch cartel-linked reps, says analyst
Posted by: superadmin - 10-21-2021, 10:44 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: A political analyst has warned of a likely increase of support for a rogue group in Melaka PKR if the party nominates anyone linked to it as a candidate in the upcoming state election.

Speaking to FMT, Awang Azman Pawi of Universiti Malaya (UM) said PKR would be putting its reputation at stake if it failed to prove that it had candidates more qualified than those linked to what the press has come to refer to as a “cartel” of former state party leaders.

He said PKR’s stability would continue to be under threat if it didn’t take action against the group to prevent an increase of support for it and to ensure the party was not exposed to ridicule.

“It has to conduct a spring cleaning to prove it is capable of coming out stronger and more united without the cartel in the party and that it has candidates who are more qualified,” he added.

He said there was no denying that there was such a cartel in Melaka PKR and that its influence was strong enough to give it the courage to go against the party’s central leadership.

Pro-PH group urges top guns to say ‘no’ to Melaka 4 ‘traitors’
Posted by: superadmin - 10-20-2021, 06:47 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR – An informal group of Pakatan Harapan supporters have called on the coalition to reject nominations of former Melaka chief minister Datuk Seri Idris Haron and three other reps for the upcoming state election.

The group, which calls itself Kerajaan Gagal Kembali (Return of the Failed Government), said that it rejects any cooperation with the four assemblymen who had withdrawn support for the chief minister and triggered the political crisis while the state is recovering from the Covid-19 pandemic.

The group, led by social media influencer Zack Rockstar, submitted a memorandum to the PH leadership at the PKR headquarters in Merchant Square, Petaling Jaya, this afternoon.

The memorandum was sent just as PH leaders, including its presidential council comprising PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Amanah president Mohamad Sabu and DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Ng, arrived at the headquarters to hold a meeting on the state election.

US hypes ‘nuclear threat’ from China, Russia to legitimize security and arms race

US hypes ‘nuclear threat’ from China, Russia to legitimize absolute security and arms race

[Image: dcd50e0b-c8d2-49f3-bf94-766c46ce4e6a.jpeg]

Senior US officials and Western media have spared no efforts to hype the so-called "nuclear threat" from China, even after China clarified an inaccurate report about a "hypersonic missile test in August," as the test was about a reusable spacecraft, with the Chinese Foreign Ministry saying on Tuesday that the US is hyping the "China threat theory" to pursue absolute security and expand military power. Experts stressed that Washington is the one that should be held accountable for intensifying the arms race between major nuclear powers.

The US has a clear advantage over China and Russia in nuclear weapons, and it has militarized space and exerted huge security pressure on other countries to further break the balance between major nuclear powers, said analysts. They added that Washington has openly shown its hostility toward Beijing and Moscow by treating them as "competitors." China and Russia are justified in taking action and strengthening the development of relevant capabilities not only for self-defense but also to stabilize international security.

Most young crypto traders don’t realize it’s not regulated, UK markets watchdog says
Posted by: superadmin - 10-20-2021, 02:54 PM - Forum: Business, Economy and Investment - No Replies

  • 69% of under-40 traders investing in cryptocurrencies incorrectly believe they’re regulated, according to the U.K. Financial Conduct Authority.
  • 68% of younger traders compared investing in cryptocurrencies and other high-risk products to gambling, the regulator said.
  • The FCA previously warned a “new, younger, more diverse group of consumers” was getting involved in higher risk investments.

LONDON — Most cryptocurrency investors under the age of 40 don’t realize it isn’t a regulated product, according to the U.K. Financial Conduct Authority.

Cryptocurrencies are not regulated in the U.K., meaning people are not protected by consumer protection laws if their funds are lost for any reason — for example in a hack on an exchange.

But, according to research published by the FCA, most young people investing in crypto aren’t aware of this, with 69% incorrectly believing it is regulated.

Climate change: Fossil fuel production set to soar over next decade
Posted by: superadmin - 10-20-2021, 02:43 PM - Forum: Environment Protection News - No Replies

Plans by governments to extract fossil fuels up to 2030 are incompatible with keeping global temperatures to safe levels, says the UN.

The UNEP production gap report say countries will drill or mine more than double the levels needed to keep the 1.5C threshold alive.

Oil and gas recovery is set to rise sharply with only a modest decrease in coal.

There has been little change since the first report was published in 2019.

With the COP26 climate conference just over a week away, there is already a huge focus on the carbon-cutting ambitions of the biggest emitters.

But despite the flurry of net zero emission goals and the increased pledges of many countries, some of the biggest oil, gas and coal producers have not set out plans for the rapid reductions in fossil fuels that scientists say are necessary to limit temperatures in coming years.

These doctors are spreading misinformation about the Covid vaccine

They take an oath to do no harm, but these doctors are spreading misinformation about the Covid vaccine

[Image: 211013175200-christiane-northrup-2007-exlarge-169.jpg]

(CNN)She was a frequent guest on The Oprah Winfrey Show -- an Ivy League-educated OB-GYN who often spoke about women's health and holistic medicine.
She was a media darling, and in 2013 made Reader's Digest's annual list of 100 most trusted people in America. If you go to Dr. Christiane Northrup's Facebook page, her posts dispensing advice on health and aging to her 558,000 followers seem consistent with that persona of several years ago.

But Northrup also uses her Facebook page to direct followers to Telegram, where another side of her is apparent. Here, on this platform with lax moderation, lies a miasma of misinformation and conspiracy theories.

"Best Explanation I've Seen About Why the Covid Jabs Are Killer Shots," reads one post that she shared.

US Capitol riot panel votes to hold Trump ally Bannon in criminal contempt
Posted by: superadmin - 10-20-2021, 02:08 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

WASHINGTON – Lawmakers investigating the deadly assault on the United States Capitol voted unanimously yesterday to pursue criminal contempt charges for a key ally of former president Donald Trump for refusing to testify.

Former White House adviser Steve Bannon failed to comply with a subpoena to appear before the cross-party January 6 congressional select committee on Thursday last week.

The right-wing political adviser had told the panel he would be withholding testimony and documents until Trump’s claim of “executive privilege”, which allows presidents to keep certain conversations with aides secret, had been resolved.

But the nine-member committee said Bannon’s position was not a lawful basis to ignore the order and voted unanimously to adopt a report setting out the case against him.

“Mr. Bannon has no legal right to ignore the committee’s lawful subpoena,” representative Liz Cheney, vice-chair of the committee and one of only two Republican members, said yesterday during the vote.

Experts believe Trump’s claims that he is entitled to block Bannon from giving evidence to investigators are likely baseless, since the presidential “executive privilege” carve-out is not generally understood to apply to former occupants of the White House.

Furthermore, Bannon was not even serving in government at the time covered by the subpoena.

The move paves the way for the Democratic-controlled House of Representatives to vote to refer the 67-year-old former White House chief strategist to the Justice Department to consider charges.

“Mr. Bannon will comply with our investigation or he will face the consequences,” committee chairman Bennie Thompson said yesterday.

China eyes coal market intervention to curb price spikes
Posted by: superadmin - 10-20-2021, 02:01 PM - Forum: Business, Economy and Investment - No Replies

BEIJING – China's top economic planner said it is considering an intervention to bring down soaring coal prices, as Beijing frets over a cost spike that has put increasing pressure on the country's energy security and growth, while posing a threat to the global economy.

The world's number two economy expanded slower than expected in the third quarter as an energy crisis began to bite, official data showed this week, with electricity shortages and production cuts dragging industrial output.

The crisis comes as global commodity prices soar owing to a surge in demand as the world reopens from Covid lockdowns, while the problem has been exacerbated by government targets to cut emissions and a sharp drop in imports from Australia owing to a political standoff.

Yesterday, the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) said it was studying measures to cap coal prices, which have hit record highs.

In an online statement published after meeting with industry leaders, the NDRC noted that costs “have risen rapidly, hitting successive record highs, greatly pushing up production costs... and adversely affecting power supply and winter heating”.

It warned it would take a “zero tolerance” approach and “severely crack down on” activities like spreading false information or price collusion, so as to maintain market order.
