Report: Nur Sajat arrested in Bangkok, Thailand

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 20 — Cosmetics entrepreneur Muhammad Sajjad Kamaruz Zaman or Nur Sajat was arrested by Thai immigration authorities, Harian Metro reported quoting an anonymous source.

The arrest was made on September 8 based on information from Malaysian authorities on the whereabouts of Nur Sajat in Bangkok, Thailand.

According to the Malay-language tabloid’s source, the 36-year-old was detained in a luxury condominium in Bangkok with a man and a Thai woman during the immigration raid.

The Thai immigration department was believed to have been tracking Nur Sajat since March, based on information shared by the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) to the Thai authorities.

Economic Watch: European businesses yearn for Chinese market despite COVID-19 pandemi
Posted by: superadmin - 09-19-2021, 07:51 PM - Forum: Business, Economy and Investment - No Replies

LONDON, Sept. 19 (Xinhua) -- Powerful consumption driven by massive middle class, a sustainable and inclusive business climate, innovative dynamics, economic resilience, booming imports and exports trade ... These are reasons given by European business leaders for their confidence in the Chinese market and expanding investment in the promising country.

GIGANTIC CONSUMPTION
During the COVID-19 pandemic, luxury brand Rapport London shifted its focus to digital economy, seeing a strong double-digit percentage growth in its online business across the world, especially in the booming online market of China.

"The Chinese market is set to become the largest luxury market by 2025, and we want to be a part of this growth," said Oliver Rapport, the CEO of Rapport London, in an interview with Xinhua.

"The importance of the Chinese market is paramount," said Rapport, adding that the luxury goods market in the Chinese mainland saw a significant boost in consumer spending in 2020 and is expected to grow continuously into the year of 2025.

Noting that his company has set up online stores on Chinese e-commerce platforms, including WeChat and Alibaba, both well-known to Chinese consumers, Rapport said. "It's a great opportunity for us, and we have received very welcoming responses on our social platforms such as Little Red Book, Weibo and again, WeChat."

Talking about the company's next move in China in the post-pandemic era, Rapport said that in addition to digital sales, he plans to open offline stores in collaboration with Chinese partners.

Swiss chocolate brand Laderach is also eyeing a sweet spot in this growing market, with ambitious expansion plans into China.

Laderach CEO Johannes Laderach said it was time to expand beyond the chocolate-loving nation of Switzerland, and head East. This comes after the nation's chocolate industry took a hard hit during the pandemic and Swiss per capita consumption of chocolate decreased to its lowest level in 40 years.

"A year ago we started with an online presence at Tmall, and in our own online store with a small team in China. The sales exceeded our wildest expectations. We are now opening our retail presence earlier than planned," he told Xinhua in a recent interview.

He stressed that Shanghai would mark a first entry point into the vast Chinese market. "We really believe in the city of Shanghai as the business capital of China. Other cities will also follow, and of course with our e-commerce presence we are available in the whole of China," he said.

China is expected to see the size of its private consumption more than double in the next decade, making the world's second largest economy a global consumption powerhouse, matching the size of the current U.S. market, according to a research report released earlier this year by Morgan Stanley.

"China is probably going to be the number one GDP country in the world in 2030. At the same time, the number of middle-class people within China is growing significantly," said John McLean, newly-appointed chair of the Institute of Directors for the City of London.

"The Chinese market is very important to British companies, especially by 2030," McLean told Xinhua.

Terengganu govt sued for RM44mil over unpaid bill
Posted by: superadmin - 09-19-2021, 07:37 PM - Forum: Business. Economy and Investment - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: A senator has urged the Terengganu state government to honour its commitments after it was sued for RM44 million over the now abandoned Taman Ilmu project in Besut.

Speaking to FMT, Raja Kamarul Bahrin Shah said the issue actually began almost a decade ago when the previous state administration hired two Korean firms, Yeonhee Engineering Proff Co and Vitzrosys Co, to carry out repair works on the project.

The two companies later established Ruas Bina Sdn Bhd in Malaysia and remain its majority shareholders.

However, the state failed to pay the firms for the work done, leading to a lawsuit in 2016.

Subsequently, the new PAS administration that took over the state government in 2018 sought to resolve the issue and issued two letters of intent to Ruas Bina in 2019.

Here’s Why Chinese Investment Will Not Happen Anytime Soon In Afghanistan
Posted by: superadmin - 09-19-2021, 06:12 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

When the U.S. decided to withdraw from Afghanistan after a 20-year war that it could not win from the beginning, many Western countries said it was a mistake. Even its closest ally, the United Kingdom, has criticised the American decision to leave Afghanistan as a “mistake” that has handed the Taliban “momentum”, not to mention a return of terror group al-Qaeda.

The UK defence secretary, Ben Wallace, said the withdrawal agreement negotiated in Doha, Qatar, by the Trump administration was a “rotten deal”. And he warned that the international community will “pay the consequences”, arguing that the failed country will once again become breeding grounds for terrorist organizations like the al-Qaeda. It will back to square one.

The European Union was so furious with the U.S. withdrawal, including Biden’s mishandling that led to the chaotic withdrawal, so much so that after a meeting of EU defence ministers, it says the moment had come to establish its own permanent military force. Some had even argued that the withdrawal would open new geopolitical space for China in the greater Middle East region.

Someone has to do it: Shafie on values in politics
Posted by: superadmin - 09-19-2021, 04:34 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: 15092021_-_Shafie_Apdal_-_SADIQ_ASYRAF_-_13.jpg]

KUALA LUMPUR – A former vice-president of Umno before being sacked by the party, he emerged as president of Warisan to clinch the chief ministership of Sabah. Most recently, he emerged as a possible prime ministerial candidate following the resignation of Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

In a candid and wide-ranging exclusive interview with The Vibes’ Eddin Khoo, just prior to delivering a speech in Parliament flaying the Pakatan Harapan’s signing of a memorandum of understanding with Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob’s administration, Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal speaks of values in politics, East-West Malaysian relations and the challenges of a prime ministerial prospect from East Malaysia.

Eddin Khoo: Datuk Seri, the opposition signed a memorandum of understanding with the Ismail Sabri administration recently. Warisan appears not to have been a part of this. Can you explain what Warisan’s position actually is within the broader alignment of the opposition?

Shafie Apdal: I think Malaysians at large are not only confused by all that has been happening, but are truly fed up with politicians… People like us. Why is that so? Mainly because of how we function, practise, do things as politicians.

The country seems to be in an environment resembling mayhem, a state of confusion. There is an increasing tendency of political people to simply use the phrase “in the interest of the country and the people”. I ask whether this is all just sweet talk and lip service, and whether they really mean it.

This is why millions of Malaysians today are fed up: not only are they confused, they seem to be saying: “What are these guys doing?”

Spreading positive Vibes for one year – Terence Fernandez
Posted by: superadmin - 09-19-2021, 04:11 PM - Forum: Business. Economy and Investment - No Replies

SO, why would Malaysia need another news portal? This was among the questions thrown at us when a motley group of friends – yes, some with deep pockets – got together one evening in the middle of 2020 and dreamed up a platform to bring our standards of journalism to the masses.

The question was a legitimate one. The news business can be a thankless one and it is one that burns money. Here we are in the middle of a global pandemic launching one, with zero idea where the revenue was going to come from – if it was going to come.

Only the commitment of a funder that this is something he will see through for the long haul. Simply because it is something that the nation needs.

And so, with much pomp and pageantry – and fireworks that cost just over RM20,000 (no, not RM1 million as some had erroneously estimated) – The Vibes was launched today, one year ago in Kota Kinabalu.

It coincided with a mini concert that helped provide temporary jobs and respite to the event management and entertainment industry reeling from a lockdown that at the time seemingly had no conclusion.

But, more importantly, The Vibes was launched in the midst of the Sabah election with a promise of “Malaysia. From Every Side”.

YOURSAY | Pejuang no longer kingmaker in wake of MOU
Posted by: superadmin - 09-19-2021, 09:48 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

Proarte: Look at the tone of Parti Pejuang Tanah Air (Pejuang) founder Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s man Khairuddin Abu Hassan - it is so crude and insulting.

Nobody in the opposition sidelined Warisan, Pejuang or Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (Muda). The reality is they were sidelined by the government, which did not invite them for discussion.

Khairuddin should go crying to PM Ismail Sabri Yaakob and ask why they were “sidelined”. It is possible that the PM might tell Khairuddin that the Warisan-Pejuang-Muda trio is a mosquito party whose support he does not need.

Didn’t Mahathir “sideline” opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim since 1998 as well? Didn’t Mahathir sabotage Anwar’s chance of becoming PM in 2020 by resigning as PM and causing the Pakatan Harapan government to collapse and see his party Bersatu defect into the arms of BN and PAS? They went on to form the new Perikatan Nasional (PN) government.

While in the opposition, haven’t Warisan, Pejuang and Muda been lukewarm at best about supporting Anwar to be PM? In fact, Mahathir has been downright hostile towards Anwar.

Warisan, Pejuang and Muda are under the thumb of Mahathir and their narrow political agenda is to make sure Anwar does not become PM - it is as basic as that. I see them as trojans who are working in the interest of PN.

Harapan Plus should contest in all the seats Warisan, Pejuang and Muda plan to contest in and put them to pasture politically.

Apa Nama: Indeed, Khairuddin should ask Ismail Sabri about this instead. Perhaps your chief Mahathir wanted people to come and invite him with drums and trumpets.

By the way, who is Mahathir? He is nothing but a menace and nuisance to this country. What did he do for this country besides building white elephants and destroying the institutions that we now need to reform?

Your chief had turned this country back two to three decades. You can go and fly kites with your sidelined claim. Pejuang deserves to be sidelined.

One stunning afternoon: Setbacks imperil Biden’s reset
Posted by: superadmin - 09-18-2021, 07:44 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

WASHINGTON (AP) — It was an hour President Joe Biden would no doubt like to forget.

On Friday, the Pentagon acknowledged that a drone strike in Afghanistan killed 10 civilians, including seven children, not terrorists. A panel advising the Food and Drug Administration voted to not recommend COVID booster shots for all Americans over 16, dashing an administration hope. And The punishing headlines, all within an hour, underscored the perils for any president from the uncontrollable events that can define a term in office.

They came as Biden has seen public approval numbers trend downward as the COVID-19 crisis has deepened and Americans cast blamed for the flawed U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan.

The administration had hoped to roll out tougher vaccine guidelines, a new international alliance to thwart China and a recommitment to what Biden has done best: drawing on his years on Capitol Hill and knowledge of the legislative process to cajole fellow Democrats to pass the two far-reaching spending bills that make up the heart of his agenda.

Those ambitions are now more difficult.

France announced it was recalling its ambassador to the U.S. out of anger for being cut out of a secret nuclear submarine deal Biden had struck with the United Kingdom and Australia.

Bats in Laos caves found to carry coronaviruses that share key feature with Sars-CoV-2

[Image: nf-virus-180921.jpg?itok=HEzsntCz&timestamp=1631961059]

VIENTIANE (BLOOMBERG) - Bats dwelling in limestone caves in northern Laos were found to carry coronaviruses that share a key feature with Sars-CoV-2, moving scientists closer to pinpointing the cause of Covid-19.

Researchers at France's Pasteur Institute and the University of Laos looked for viruses similar to the one that causes Covid-19 among hundreds of horseshoe bats.

They found three with closely matched receptor binding domains - the part of the coronavirus' spike protein used to bind to human ACE-2, the enzyme it targets to cause an infection.

The finding, reported in a paper released on Friday (Sept 17) that is under consideration for publication by Nature journal, shows that viruses closely related to Sars-CoV-2 exist in nature, including in several Rhinolophus, or horseshoe bat, species.

The research supports the hypothesis that the pandemic began from a spillover of a bat-borne virus.

About 1,000 such infections may be occurring daily in southern China and South-east Asia in areas with dense populations of bats from the Rhinolophus genus, a study on Tuesday found.
