A LOCAL climate justice movement has called on newly-minted prime minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to declare a climate emergency as the world braces for the threats of climate destabilisation and a looming environmental collapse.
A climate emergency refers to a situation in which urgent action is required to reduce or halt climate change and avoid potentially irreversible environmental damage resulting from it.
In August, then-environment and water minister Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said the government does not need to declare an emergency yet since climate actions are underway, even as flash floods, weather changes and logging continue to take place.

THE winds of change that blew across the country in the aftermath of the 15th General Election (GE15) can be said to have blown away all hopes of seeing racial harmony and religious tolerance taking firm root in a multiracial society.
What has emerged is a coalition of two major forces that are united in their political cause and political creed that might not be healthy for the country.
Perikatan Nasional (PN) which was given a slim chance of advancing to the forefront of national politics, staged a stunning comeback to overtake the Barisan Nasional (BN) to become the new powerhouse in Malaysian political history.
But behind this tale of the rise of a new dawn for Malaysia is the frightening awareness that the leaders of the two parties – Bersatu and PAS – are not the type you would want to entrust your future.
Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, the Bersatu president who sees Jews behind every tree, is no strong advocate of a pluralistic society because he once said he is Malay first and Malaysian second.
Tan Sri Hadi Awang, the PAS president who sees communists under every bed, is overtly antagonistic towards other races and is hell-bent on establishing a state based largely on divine rules.
With these two leaders now in the ascendancy, they could pose big problem to all the cherished values that have sustained collective harmony for so long.

PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has expressed confidence in having greater ties between the federal government and the Sarawak state government following a visit from Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) chairman Abang Johari Openg at his house this morning.
Anwar praised GPS as a “pillar” in the unity government he leads together with Pakatan Harapan, Barisan Nasional and Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS), with support from MPs from Muda, Warisan and Parti Bangsa Malaysia.
“The relationship between the federal government and Sarawak will certainly strengthen plans to build a better Malaysia,” he said in a Facebook post.
GPS and GRS had initially backed Perikatan Nasional chairman Muhyiddin Yassin as prime minister following the inconclusive results of last Saturday’s general election, in which no coalition or party won a simple majority to form the government.
The two Borneo coalitions eventually said they would follow the King’s wish for a unity government.

PETALING JAYA: MCA president Wee Ka Siong has dismissed speculation he was involved in a meeting with former prime minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob, other Barisan Nasional members and PAS leaders.
In a Twitter post making the rounds, a meeting between BN and PAS members purportedly took place at the Tropicana Golf Resort from 10.30am to noon yesterday.
The post lists Ismail, who is Umno vice-president, former Umno secretary-general Annuar Musa, PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan, Wee and Annuar’s press secretary Tun Faisal Ismail Aziz as among those who attended the meeting.
Wee said he was disappointed that people were spreading rumours and implying that he was involved in political manoeuvres even though the political impasse following last Saturday’s general election had been resolved.

PAKATAN Harapan (PH) may have won the race to Putrajaya but it is one that left it battered, bruised and facing a reality check.
The country is split between PH’s style of inclusive multiracial politics with that of Perikatan Nasional’s more mono-ethnic administration (despite the latter comprising non-Malay representation in Gerakan).
Former PH Youth chief Howard Lee feels that it is now time to cool temperatures and heed the king’s wish for a unity government.

PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim “touched all the right bases” in outlining Malaysia’s foreign policy direction at his maiden press conference, says an analyst at the Institute of Strategic and International Studies.
It was noteworthy that Anwar spoke on the importance of China, an “important neighbour” with whom Malaysia had to strengthen relations, said Thomas Benjamin Daniel.

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 26 — Perikatan Nasional’s (PN) unexpectedly strong performance in the 15th general election (GE15) was due to its ability to galvanise conservative voters who rejected Barisan Nasional (BN), said analysts and political observers.
Shazwan Mustafa Kamal, an associate director for Vriens & Partners, a government affairs and political risk consultancy, said the anti-corruption messages against BN and the unpopularity of its leader Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi featured in both PN and Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) campaign.

IT does not matter if the unity government led by Malaysia’s 10th Prime Minister (PM) Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim wishes to have two, three or even more Deputies PM (DPM) but do ensure that those DPM wannabes first agreed to be paid modest salaries for a start.
As it is inevitable for the Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman to have a bloated Cabinet given the need to lure as many politicians as possible to his side, Anwar can perhaps resort to an ‘intense’ salary adjustment scheme by slashing unjustified remuneration expenses (especially allowances or sorts) currently borne by the also bloated administration of his predecessor.
On paper at least, this shouldn’t be a cumbersome task for Anwar considering that majority of his potential DPMs and ministers are not eyeing monetary reward as much as lusting for power and position.
The next measure that Anwar needs to embark upon is perhaps more challenging given that the unprecedented unity government concept has never been tested in Malaysia’s 65-year history (save to say it has been a one-party rule system all the way by Barisan Nasional except for PH’s short-lived 22 months administration).
Anwar can expect a big headache to pick his so-called ‘henchmen’ whereby he has to juggle between party quotas to reflect his unity government and selecting the most qualified men and women for the job. This is not that talent is lacking among the MPs by his side but their political affiliation makes the whole process complicated.
