Evergrande to avert default as property developer reportedly pays off bond interest

China Evergrande set to avert default as property developer reportedly pays off bond interest
  • Evergrande has remitted the funds for a key interest payment that was due Sept. 23 — ahead of a 30-day grace period that ends tomorrow, according to Chinese state media Securities Times.
  • The $83.5 interest payment on Evergrande’s March 2022 offshore bond had been closely watched by investors ever since the indebted property developer warned twice in September that it may default.

Evergrande has remitted the funds for a key interest payment that was due Sept. 23 — ahead of a 30-day grace period that ends Saturday, Chinese state media Securities Times said Friday.

That will allow the indebted Chinese property developer to stave off a widely-expected default.

Shares of Evergrande popped more than 4% on that news.

Biden says US will defend Taiwan if China attacks
Posted by: superadmin - 10-22-2021, 01:53 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

President Joe Biden said the US would defend Taiwan if China attacked, in an apparent departure from a long-held policy.

"Yes, we have a commitment to do that," he said when asked during a townhall if the US would defend Taiwan.

But a White House spokesman later told some US media outlets that his remarks did not signify a change in policy.

Taiwan reacted by saying Mr Biden's statement would not change its own position with regards to China.

The US has long practised "strategic ambiguity" when it comes to the thorny issue of defending Taiwan.

This has meant the US has been deliberately ambiguous about what it would do if China were to attack the island.

This might just look like grass, but it has the power to absorb our carbon emissions

This might just look like grass, but it has the power to absorb a load of our carbon emissions

[Image: 211015160607-01-grasslands-carbon-storage-super-169.jpg]

(CNN)Forests have long been celebrated as the natural heroes in the fight against the climate crisis. They are so good at absorbing and storing carbon dioxide, a consortium of environmental groups are calling on the world to plant one trillion trees over the next decade.
But while we are looking up at the treetops for climate solutions, some campaigners are urging the world to look down, where another answer lies -- right under our feet.

Forests, peatlands, deserts and tundra can all absorb and hold stocks of carbon-dioxide (CO2). Of all the carbon held in land-based ecosystems, around 34% can be found in grasslands, data from the World Resources Institute show. That's not much less than the 39% held in forests.

"Whether you look at the Serengeti, the Cerrado in Brazil, whether you look at what's left of the prairies in North America or the steppes of Mongolia -- every single one of our major, iconic grassland habitats is under threat at the moment," Ian Dunn, chief executive of the British conservation organization Plantlife, told CNN.

There's also plenty of it in the United Kingdom, which will host world leaders and climate negotiators in just over a week at the COP26 climate talks in Glasgow, Scotland. Among several items on the agenda is how to protect forests and plant more trees to help slash global emissions.

But Plantlife, among other groups, is campaigning for grasslands to be protected at an international level and part of any deal that emerges in Glasgow.

Dark web a stark danger to M’sian kids, teens: experts
Posted by: superadmin - 10-22-2021, 10:52 AM - Forum: Technology - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR – Many Malaysians do not realise it, but the internet comprises three layers and that what children search for on the Web is only the tip of the iceberg.

It is estimated that 90% or more is hidden in what is known as the “deep web”.

According to Datuk Seri Akhbar Satar, director of the Institute of Crime and Criminology at HELP University, it also contains a realm that poses immense danger to children and youth.

The former Transparency International Malaysia president explained that within the deep web lies the infamous “dark web”, intentionally hidden and inaccessible with standard browsers.

“Children are curious. It is only expected that their minds will go to these areas of the internet that are out of bounds and, therefore, seem more exciting,” he said.

“This puts them in danger, especially as the dark web is misused by criminals and Mafia-based organisations.

No cooperation with Bersatu... full stop: Zahid
Posted by: superadmin - 10-22-2021, 10:41 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR – Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi reiterated that the party will not cooperate with Bersatu in the Melaka polls.

Zahid said the decision is final and that the issue of Umno delaying cooperation should not arise.

“For Bersatu, we have made the decision to never cooperate with them... full stop.

“During the Umno General Assembly, we made that decision and that was finalised: no cooperation with Bersatu,” the Bagan Datuk MP said this after holding a meeting with the Hang Tuah Jaya Umno division in Bukit Katil, Melaka, last night.

KL-Johor HSR will cause huge losses, expert warns
Posted by: superadmin - 10-22-2021, 10:37 AM - Forum: Business. Economy and Investment - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: A transport expert has warned of huge losses in the long run if the proposed Kuala Lumpur-Johor High-Speed Rail (HSR) project goes ahead.

Reacting to a government announcement that a study on the project has been completed and awaiting submission to the Cabinet, transport planning consultant Rosli Azad Khan said the KL-Johor route was not economically wise and that Singapore’s exclusion would make the project unsustainable.

The line links Kuala Lumpur to Iskandar Puteri in Johor. The project replaces the earlier planned Kuala Lumpur-Singapore HSR project.

Rosli said the project required Malaysia to import all materials, “everything from rails to signalling systems, coaches and, even nuts and bolts”.

“All the capital expenditure will flow out to pay for the costs,” he told FMT.

Hadi seemingly contradicts deputy on Timah whisky controversy
Posted by: superadmin - 10-22-2021, 10:33 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: Tuan-Ibrahim-Tuan-Man-n-Hadi-Awang-collage-221021-2.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang has seemingly contradicted his deputy on the Timah whisky controversy, stating that the name of the liquor resembles that of the Prophet Muhammad’s daughter.

“Whatever the reason given, the use of the name ‘Timah’ in the Malay language is close to the name of Fatimah al-Zahra, the beloved daughter of the Prophet Muhammad, and this can be considered as touching on the sensitivities of Muslims,” he was quoted as saying in Harakah Daily.

On Tuesday, PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said that Timah means tin and is “not a Muslim name or even a person’s name”.

“The name Timah is not a Muslim name or a person’s name. It is a type of metal. Furthermore, the logo is a picture of a man. There is no man named Timah,” he was quoted as saying in Harakah Daily.

However, Tuan Ibrahim did say that the use of the word “Timah” as the brand name was “confusing”.

Melaka defectors ‘no value’ to PH, says analyst
Posted by: superadmin - 10-22-2021, 10:27 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: Idris-Haron-and-Nor-Azman-Hassan-n-Noor-...221021.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: Pakatan Harapan (PH) may lose out if they accept the former Umno and Bersatu assemblymen who triggered a political crisis resulting in the collapse of the Melaka state assembly, as this would give a negative perception to voters, an analyst said.

Former academic Azmi Hassan told FMT they may not add any value to PH, adding that the coalition may instead be seen as prioritising party interests instead of the people’s welfare if they choose to work with them.

His comments follow PKR veep Tian Chua saying that PH should “tactically” work with anyone who can bring victory to PH in the upcoming Melaka state election, including the defectors.

“It is a tactic we must consider by any means to win the most seats,” Chua told reporters.

The Melaka political crisis was triggered by former chief minister Idris Haron (Sungai Udang), Nor Azman Hassan (Pantai Kundor), Noor Effandi Ahmad (Telok Mas) and former DAP man Norhizam Hassan Baktee (Pengkalan Batu), all of whom had earlier this month declared that they were pulling their support for the state government and chief minister Sulaiman Md Ali.

YOURSAY | Much ado about ‘super-frog’ Norhizam
Posted by: superadmin - 10-22-2021, 10:24 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: 2e267ec2c13f6b2fd2fac3951e1476cd.jpg=s800]

A Little Bit Crazy: Incumbent Pengkalan Batu state assemblyperson Norhizam Hassan Baktee had overestimated his political worthiness. Please join Pejuang, Norhizam. They need you. Pakatan Harapan parties do not need you.

Harapan can contest in all 28 seats using existing or new candidates while the four former assemblypersons who caused the collapse of the state government - Norhizam, Bersatu's Noor Effandi Ahmad (Telok Mas), Umno's Idris Haron (Sungai Udang), and Azman Hassan (Pantai Kundor) - can retire immediately.

Umno and Bersatu have sacked three of four frogs, and if Harapan does not accept them, these four can ‘balik kampung’.

By the way, there are no merit points I can see from taking in these four, especially Norhizam. He will jump again if he wins in November.

BlueShark1548: Norhizam won his seat on a DAP ticket, and it is only right that another DAP candidate be nominated to defend this seat in the upcoming Malacca state election set on Nov 20.

He had denounced the DAP as a Chinese party. The DAP had made it clear it would not accept Norhizam to contest under Harapan.

It looks like Harapan is likely to fight the election under each party's logo because PKR is prepared to accept those four traitors.

Bravo DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng for rejecting Norhizam as a candidate.

The DAP has been consistent as far as party-hoppers are concerned - it denounces them, unlike PKR leader Anwar Ibrahim.

The Malacca state election would put Anwar to the test, and it might be his last hurrah. If Anwar accepts the frogs, then Harapan would break up and each would contest under its own logo.

Have a talk, if necessary, after the election, which I think PKR is likely to lose.
