Are three Umno bigwigs among those on chopping block?
Posted by: superadmin - 01-27-2023, 10:09 AM - Forum: Politics - Replies (4)

KUALA LUMPUR – At least three embattled senior Umno leaders are facing the possibility of sacking by the party, with their future in the political outfit likely to be made known later today.

According to sources familiar with the matter, the trio is among a long list of Umno members whose names have been mentioned by the party’s disciplinary board for stern action.

However, the Supreme Council, which will meet at the party’s headquarters tonight, will have the final say on the matter.

One source, who spoke to The Vibes on strict condition of anonymity, said the recommendation by the disciplinary board is based on the outward conduct of these individuals that threatened to tarnish the party’s image.

“Many will be sacked, including three high-profile names,” he said last night.

His statement came on the back of Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s remark that the Supreme Council will determine the fate of former youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin.

Zahid, who is deputy prime minister, also confirmed that disciplinary action will not be exclusive to Khairy, noting that a massive purge can instead be expected.

Thanks but no thanks, Khairy tells PAS veep on Perikatan offer
Posted by: superadmin - 01-27-2023, 10:05 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR – Former health minister Khairy Jamaluddin has turned down an offer to join Perikatan Nasional (PN), saying his loyalty rests with Umno.

However, Khairy expressed his gratitude to PAS vice-president Datuk Seri Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar for offering him a spot in any party within PN, Berita Harian reported.

Despite the offer, the former Rembau MP asserted that he will remain with his current party.

Samsuri, who is also Terengganu menteri besar, had earlier said that PN and PAS were more than willing to accept Khairy should he be ousted from Umno, giving him the liberty to choose any party within the coalition.

He also said that Khairy is a “great” and “open-minded” leader, and was able to carry out his responsibilities with excellence.

Khairy, meanwhile, posted a Facebook story declaring his continued loyalty to Umno.

Tech war: China’s top memory chip maker YMTC to test the limits of innovation

Tech war: China’s top memory chip maker YMTC to test the limits of innovation under US restrictions
  • Chinese chip expert Wei Shaojun said the US has ‘weaponized [chip design] tools and advanced chipmaking tools’, forcing a shift to mature technologies
  • YMTC may even postpone construction of its second wafer fab in Wuhan due to disruptions to its procurement supply chain, according to a source

A Chinese chip expert praised China’s top NAND flash maker Yangtze Memory Technologies Co (YMTC) for its rival-beating innovation, but cautioned that the country needs to divert its focus to mature technology development after the US imposed sanctions on exports of leading edge semiconductor tech to China.

Since its founding in 2016, Wuhan-based YMTC has been China’s hope for breaking ground in the global market for NAND flash memory chips – a non-volatile semiconductor memory that retains data without power, which is pervasively used in smartphones, tablets and other consumer electronics devices.

However, those hopes have dimmed. In December, the US Commerce Department’s Bureau of Industry and Security put YMTC, along with 35 Chinese entities, on a trade blacklist that restricts procurement of US products and services without Washington’s approval. The US alleges that YMTC has provided products to companies already under its export controls, including Huawei Technologies Co and surveillance camera maker Hangzhou Hikvision Digital Technology Co.

‘Traitor’ label may stand in Azmin’s way as next Selangor MB, says analyst
Posted by: superadmin - 01-26-2023, 10:29 AM - Forum: Politics - Replies (2)

PETALING JAYA: Despite his defeat in the 15th general election (GE15), Azmin Ali still has what it takes to be put forward as Perikatan Nasional’s (PN) candidate for Selangor menteri besar, says an analyst.

Azmi Hassan of Akademi Nusantara said the former Gombak MP has influence and credibility, when compared to other PN leaders and several from Umno who are said to being poached by PN in efforts to win over Selangor in the coming state election.

Among the Umno leaders rumoured to be joining PN is former Selangor Umno chief Noh Omar, a party veteran who was dropped from Barisan Nasional’s (BN) final lineup for GE15.

On Nov 20, Noh resigned as Selangor Umno chief after announcing that he had lost confidence in the leadership of party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi following BN’s poor showing in GE15.

Microsoft scrambles to fix global outage

PARIS – US tech giant Microsoft said today it was working to fix a networking problem that had left users across the world struggling to access tools like Outlook and Teams.

Thousands of incidents were logged by the tracking website Downdetector, with complaints spiking in the hour from 0700 GMT (about 3pm Malaysian time) and particularly affecting users in Asia and Europe.

“We’ve isolated the problem to a networking configuration issue, and we are analyzing the best mitigation strategy to address it without causing additional impact,” the firm said in an update at 0900 GMT.

Microsoft did not reveal how many users were affected and did not respond to AFP requests for comment.

But its update said the issues were causing problems in several apps on the Microsoft 365 online office suite, which has more than 300 million users.

Teams, a messaging programme for companies, and email client Outlook are among the most widely used.

Issues affecting racial harmony must be handled swiftly: Sultan Ibrahim
Posted by: superadmin - 01-25-2023, 10:33 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR – Issues pertaining to racial harmony among Johoreans must be handled accurately and swiftly, said Johor ruler Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar, following the controversy surrounding a school that reportedly held a “Muslims-only” examination workshop.

In a Facebook post today, Sultan Ibrahim expressed the need for a clear and swift response from the appropriate authorities, saying these actions will deter rumour-mongering quarters from spreading confusion and hate.

This comes after news reports emerged on a recent SPM workshop, supposedly held for Muslim pupils only in an elite all-girls school in Johor.

“I don’t want my ‘Bangsa Johor’ to be confused and begin turning on each other. I cannot emphasise enough the need for racial understanding, unity, and tolerance.

“The Education Department must be quick to respond in these situations to prevent emotions and falsehoods from running wild.

What Microsoft gets from betting billions on the maker of ChatGPT

Microsoft revealed last week that it will lay off 10,000 people throughout 2023. But don’t think that means the company is having money problems. On Monday, the company announced that it’s investing billions of dollars into the hot artificial intelligence platform OpenAI.

This is Microsoft’s third investment in the company, and cements Microsoft’s partnership with one of the most exciting companies making one the most exciting technologies today: generative AI. It also shows that Microsoft is committed to making the initiative a key part of its business, as it looks to the future of technology and its place in it. And you can likely expect to see OpenAI’s services in your everyday life as companies you use integrate it into their own offerings.

Microsoft told Recode it was not disclosing the deal’s specifics, but Semafor reported two weeks ago that the two companies were talking about $10 billion, with Microsoft getting 75 percent of OpenAI’s profits until it recoups its investment, after which it would have a 49 percent stake in the company. The New York Times has since confirmed the $10 billion amount.

She told FMT in an interview: “People must consider the danger of this inquiry.”

“This (is an) attack on the (office of) the attorney-general,” she said, adding “no other AG has been attacked this way.”
