At least 20% of Sinovac recipients reject Pfizer booster shots
Posted by: superadmin - 11-05-2021, 08:32 PM - Forum: Covid-19 Pandemic - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR – A worrying number of Sinovac vaccine recipients are purportedly refusing to be administered with Pfizer booster shots, threatening to derail the government’s effort to contain the spread of the Covid-19 virus.

General practitioner Dr Boo Cheng Hau, whose clinic in Skudai, Johor, is among the selected private health facilities serving as vaccination centres for the government’s National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme, noted that at least 20% of his patients have rejected their booster shots.

It is even more concerning seeing that these individuals are considered to be in the high-risk categories, the group that is currently being prioritised by Putrajaya.

This puts them at a higher potential risk of being infected with the virus, particularly with vaccines that have shown a waning efficacy over time.

Boo, who is also Johor DAP committee member, said his clinic has begun offering the Pfizer Comirnaty booster shots since last week.

KUALA LUMPUR – DAP will be banking on newbie Muhamad Danish Zainudin to wrest Pengkalan Batu from former party man and incumbent Datuk Norhizam Hassan Baktee.

Danish, aged 25, is DAP’s Pengkalan Batu rep coordinator and Melaka DAP youth secretary.

DAP is fielding another newcomer – Leng Chau Yen, 37 – to contest in Bandar Hilir, while its incumbent, Tey Kok Kiew, will be running for Bemban.

Leng is Melaka DAP publicity secretary since 2018 and Tey’s political secretary (2013-2021). Moreover, she is head of Kota Melaka DAP women’s wing as well.

Meanwhile, Bemban’s incumbent Wong Fort Pin is not in the running, according to the candidate list released by DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng today.

Switch to luxury MPVs for ministers waste of people’s money, says PKR man
Posted by: superadmin - 11-05-2021, 05:51 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: The switch from a four-seater sedan to a seven-seater luxury MPV as a minister’s official car is a waste of the people’s money, said a PKR leader.

Federal Territories PKR Youth chief P Prabakaran criticised the government for switching from the Proton Perdana 2.4L to the Toyota Vellfire 2.5L as the official ministerial car.

“The Perikatan National minister (finance minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz) has not only wasted the people’s money by purchasing these luxury cars, but it was also recently exposed that nearly RM1 million was spent on renovations and new furniture in the prime minister’s office.

“Plus, the renovation to the prime minister’s official home, Seri Perdana Complex, cost RM30 million,” he said in a statement today.

Hylo Open: Zii Jia advance to quarter finals to face Thailand
Posted by: superadmin - 11-05-2021, 05:38 PM - Forum: Badminton - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR – National men's top single shuttler, Lee Zii Jia, marched into the quarter finals of Hylo Open in Germany after he ended Irish player's journey, Nhat Nguyen, at the second round of the tournament yesterday.

However, it was not plain sailing for second seeded Zii Jia as Nguyen gave a great battle before the Malaysian badminton star took the first set, 22-20.

The 22-year-old Kedahan player then ensured his last eight berth when he edged out Nguyen 21-16 to meet the eighth seed shuttler, Kantaphon Wangcharoen of Thailand next.

Kantaphon had earlier saw off Indian player, Sourabh Verma, 21-12, 21-18 in the second round.

Meanwhile, national mixed doubles pair, Chen Tang Jie-Peck Yen Wei continued their impressive run in the tournament as they pulled off a stunning comeback to stun third seed duo from England, Marcus Ellis-Lauren Smith.

Fact check on cabotage debate: Wee misled us, says ex-deputy minister
Posted by: superadmin - 11-05-2021, 02:24 PM - Forum: Politics - Replies (1)

[Image: ong-kian-ming-wee-ka-siong-collage-051121-1.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: Bangi MP Ong Kian Ming has listed five areas where transport minister Wee Ka Siong misled the public during the cabotage policy debate with DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng.

Firstly, Ong said many times during the debate, Wee wanted to create the impression that global submarine cable company and Japanese telecom giant NTT Ltd was the only owner of the proposed Apricot undersea submarine cable project that was bypassing Malaysia.

The former deputy international trade and industry minister said this was “grossly misleading” as there were a number of other shareholders in the project, including Google, Facebook, PLDT (Philippines largest telecommunications company), and Chunghwa Telecom (a Taiwanese telco).

“Did Wee conveniently leave out the participation of other players in the Apricot project because two of the shareholders, Facebook and Google, were part of a group of companies (local and international) which sent two letters to former prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin and one letter to Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob asking for Wee’s cabotage policy to be set aside?” Ong asked in a statement.

He noted that these companies also wanted the return of former transport minister Loke Siew Fook’s cabotage exemption policy on undersea submarine cable repairs.

OPEC+ agrees to stick to oil production plan, defying U.S. pressure
Posted by: superadmin - 11-05-2021, 12:57 PM - Forum: Business, Economy and Investment - No Replies

  • The group, known as OPEC+, will rollover its August program to gradually increase oil production by 400,000 barrels per day each month.
  • Oil prices have recently hit their highest levels since 2014, and crude-importing countries are feeling the pain.

OPEC and its oil-producing allies have agreed to continue with their current output plan, deciding against loosening the taps in the face of multiyear highs in crude prices and U.S. pressure to help cool the market.

The group, known as OPEC+, will rollover its August program to gradually increase oil production by 400,000 barrels per day each month.

Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak told a news conference Thursday: “The decision was made previously to increase production by 400,000 (barrels per day) every month, and I underscore every month, until the end of 2022. Today the decision was reiterated to maintain current parameters which were decided on earlier.”

Ban on liquor sales will encourage black market: ex-DBKL adviser
Posted by: superadmin - 11-05-2021, 11:40 AM - Forum: Business. Economy and Investment - No Replies

[Image: 02112021_-_KUL_-_Liquor_sales_-_Sairien-19.JPG]

KUALA LUMPUR – Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) should consider regulating liquor sales in grocers, convenience stores, and Chinese medicinal halls instead of imposing outright bans that encourage illicit trading, said a former senior adviser.

Former DBKL excise licensing board chairman Datuk P. Gunaseelan said the ban of liquor sales in those outlets could give rise to bootleg products while legitimate businesses in the city will have their incomes affected.

He added that authorities must conduct thorough studies and hold consultations with stakeholders before making drastic decisions.

Melaka polls will be barometer for coalitions’ performance: Mahfuz
Posted by: superadmin - 11-05-2021, 11:35 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: 12012021-KUL-_mahfuz_omar_-_file_pix.jpg]

GEORGE TOWN – The Melaka election will largely be a contest to judge coalition performance and voter sentiment over the “betrayal” of the four assemblymen, said Amanah vice-president Datuk Mahfuz Omar.

He told The Vibes that the majority of voters will not be bothered about whether PAS is working with Umno or Bersatu, but how the ruling coalitions have performed since the 2018 general election.

“Voters will be asking themselves who made their lives better.”

He added that it remains to be seen if voters will “forgive” the party-hopping over the years that led to the current fluid political situation.

“Owing to their lust for power and greed, they (party-hoppers) caused an entire nation to suffer as the political imbalances created a poor initial response to managing Covid-19, leading to the loss of lives and economic hardships.”

While Barisan Nasional failed to retain the state in 2018, Pakatan Harapan lost it during the Sheraton Move early last year.
