KUALA TERENGGANU: Former minister Khairuddin Aman Razali and a son of the late PAS president Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat lost in the central party elections today.

Khairuddin and Nik Mohamad Abduh failed to meet the threshold of 609 votes to qualify them to be part of the 18-member PAS central committee.

Met by reporters after the party’s muktamar here, Nik Abduh accepted the defeat and said he relished having fewer responsibilities now.

“I congratulate my friends who have won. I feel it is a big burden that I have let go. I will continue to assist the party wherever possible,” he said.

Do away with politics, race in Budget matters to affect real economic growth: experts
Posted by: superadmin - 11-07-2021, 12:35 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: 06102020-KUL-_construction_workers_forei...ixabay.jpg]

GEORGE TOWN – The real economic potential of the country can only be unlocked if Putrajaya is willing to push ahead with a federal budget that is equitable and based on competencies, rather than just race and politics.

Two technocrats shared their views that Budget 2022 may generate growth on paper, but its benefits will likely not trickle down to the groups who need it most.

With the economy still looking sluggish as the country emerges from lockdowns, there is a need for a budget that is evenly distributed among its productive sectors, instead of just channelling aid to areas that may not really need it, they said.

To an extent, it keeps the poor impoverished, said former economic adviser to the prime minister Muhammed Abdul Khalid.

He said while race still matters in ensuring equitable growth, it must be properly targeted.

One example he cited was the huge deficit in allocations between the Bumiputera and non-Bumiputera groups.

Some RM11.4 billion has been allocated to the Bumiputeras compared with just RM345 million to the Chinese and Indian communities put together.

“We have not even reached the other minorities yet.

Emulate Jokowi for a better Malaysian future
Posted by: superadmin - 11-07-2021, 11:31 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

Somebody from Singapore recently wrote a very flattering piece on President Jokowi of Indonesia.

Perhaps unknown to many Malaysians who still look at Indonesia as an exporter of maids and factory workers, the country has made huge strides in its economic and social development.

Jokowi is clearly a key reason for their success.

We always thrash leaders when things go badly, and it’s only fair we credit them when things go well. Jokowi certainly deserves much credit.

Indonesia started its life as a modern nation the hard way. They fought a war of independence against the Dutch that lasted for years, and they paid heavily for it with their blood.

When somebody in Indonesia claims to be a freedom fighter, it means more than him having gone to Amsterdam to have some independence discussions over herring and cheese. It means he was in a shooting war.

After independence Indonesians had a strongman president – Sukarno – who actually carried out an armed confrontation, called Konfrontasi (possibly from confrontatie in Dutch) to stop the formation of Malaysia in 1963.

Zii Jia 1 match away from first title in 8 months
Posted by: superadmin - 11-07-2021, 11:18 AM - Forum: Badminton - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR: National top men’s singles, Lee Zii Jia is getting closer to clinching his first title in eight months after he stormed to the final of Hylo Open 2021 in Germany, earlier today, Malaysian time.

The second seed shuttler defeated sixth seed player, Srikanth Kidambi of India in the last four to set up a final showdown against the unseeded Loh Kean Yew of Singapore, later today.

However, it was not an easy ride for Zii Jia as Srikanth showed his resilience in the first set before the Kedahan player recorded a slim 21-19 victory.

In the second set, Zii Jia once again survived a scare as the world No 8 fought back from a 9-15 deficit to catch Srikanth and eventually got lucky to advance to the final after he won 22-20.

Umno’s election overhaul bodes well, says analyst
Posted by: superadmin - 11-07-2021, 11:12 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: The bold move by Umno and Barisan Nasional to retain only four old faces in the Melaka elections in favour of new candidates bodes well for them, says a political scientist.

“It’s a good move on their part. Let’s face it, their image has been tainted with corruption and scandals,” said Ahmad Fauzi Abdul Hamid, a professor of political science at Universiti Sains Malaysia.

“The courage to dispense with the majority of incumbents gives the impression that the party is not resistant to change, contrary to the overly conservative image of Umno as portrayed by its detractors,” he told FMT.

Not naming CM-designate could cost PH, say analysts
Posted by: superadmin - 11-07-2021, 11:08 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Pakatan Harapan’s failure to name its chief minister-designate should it win the Melaka state election could be costly for the coalition, say analysts.

“To me, this is a blunder by PH,” said former Universiti Teknologi Malaysia lecturer Azmi Hassan. “People want to know who could potentially become the CM after the elections.”

The lack of a name would have a negative impact on voters, especially among fence-sitters, he said.

Political scientist Wong Chin Huat said the decision to not name Adly Zahari of Amanah, a former chief minister, as the candidate did not instil confidence.

He said the decision was “obviously to not close the door for Idris Haron”. Idris is also a former chief minister.

Wong said it would be naive to think that DAP, likely to be the largest party after the polls, would accept Idris as CM in the unlikely event of PH’s victory.

PH leaders must show solidarity for battle in Melaka
Posted by: superadmin - 11-07-2021, 11:03 AM - Forum: Politics - Replies (1)

From Zaid Ibrahim

The best thing that has happened to us since the Sheraton Move is the state election in Melaka.

Some tried to go to court to stop it, others questioned why the governor decided to call for the dissolution of the state assembly. Quite a sizeable group has played the high moral ground by bashing the group of four for bringing the state government down.

Incredulous still are the persistent attacks on Anwar Ibrahim by his friends in PH for welcoming the gang of four led by Idris Haron, the former chief minister. Idris was with me in Parliament many years ago, and he frequently questioned (in a nice way) my so-called liberal views, telling his audience that Zaid was a different kind of Malay (whatever he meant). But I see him as a serious politician who can move things, someone not to be dismissed summarily.

Muda should have had a go in Melaka, say analysts
Posted by: superadmin - 11-07-2021, 09:33 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Muda’s decision not to contest the Melaka polls marks a lost opportunity for the fledgling political party, as the it could have tested its appeal with voters and split votes in some contests.

The party, which has yet to be registered, could have fielded independent candidates and might even have beaten some rivals, an analyst said.

Muda founder and pro tem president Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman could have taken the risk to field candidates just to test the field, said Ahmad Fauzi Abdul Hamid, a political science professor at Universiti Sains Malaysia.

Umno-PAS tussle in Melaka a ‘one-off’, says Tuan Ibrahim
Posted by: superadmin - 11-07-2021, 09:30 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: Tuan-Ibrahim-Tuan-Man-Bernama-061121.jpg]

KUALA TERENGGANU: Umno and PAS’s current friendly fight situation in the Melaka state election was today described as a “one-off” and in no way an indicator of what is to come in the parliamentary general election expected next year.

PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said the party had taken its time to engage with Umno to convince them that straight fights were the way to go.

“We took a long time to talk to Umno, and our engagements with them have been positive. But in the end, they want to contest all seats. We’re disappointed that our attempt at unity ahead of the Melaka polls did not go our way.
