Why the rush to hold polls, ask Sarawak DAP leaders
Posted by: superadmin - 11-04-2021, 12:30 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: The looming Sarawak election following today’s lifting of the Emergency in the state will see young voters lose out, a DAP leader said.

“The lifting of the Emergency just goes to show that Abang Jo (Sarawak chief minister Abang Johari Openg) desperately wants an election before the end of this year with the obvious reason of avoiding Undi18,” said Sarawak DAP chairman and Stampin MP Chong Chieng Jen.

“My question to Abang Jo is: Is Undi18 scarier than Covid-19? Why does he want to risk the lives of Sarawakians and opt for an early election just to avoid Undi18?”

In September, the High Court in Kuching ordered the government to implement the Undi18 amendments by Dec 31 after allowing a legal challenge filed by five Sarawakian youths against the decision by the previous government, led by Muhyiddin Yassin, not to implement the amendments by July.

One of the amendments lowers the voting age from 21 to 18.

  The science of stupidity
Posted by: superadmin - 11-04-2021, 12:25 PM - Forum: Stop Racism and Religious Bigotry - No Replies

The French thinker Voltaire said: “The only way to comprehend what mathematicians mean by Infinity is to contemplate the extent of human stupidity.”

The late Carlo M Cipolla, who taught for many years at Berkeley University in the US, did more than contemplate the extent of human stupidity; he postulated several laws after much research.

The professor of economic history came up with five laws which he penned in an essay called The Basic Laws of Human Stupidity.
  • Always and inevitably everyone underestimates the number of stupid individuals in circulation;
  • The probability that a certain person is stupid is independent of any other characteristic of that person;
  • A stupid person is a person who causes losses to another person or to a group of persons while himself deriving no gain and even possibly incurring losses;
  • Non-stupid people always underestimate the damaging power of stupid individuals. In particular non-stupid people constantly forget that at all times and places, and under any circumstances, dealing and/or associating with stupid people always turns out to be a costly mistake; and
  • A stupid person is the most dangerous type of person.

How China shapes the world's coal
Posted by: superadmin - 11-03-2021, 08:31 PM - Forum: Environment Protection News - No Replies

Coal, the most carbon intensive fossil fuel, has come under increasing pressure from climate campaigners and communities affected by pollution from the industry. In recent years, at least 100 major banks – including the World Bank, Inter-American Development Bank, the European Investment Bank and many others – have divested from coal mining or coal-fired power plants.

But as many financial institutions have taken a step away from coal, some countries moved in to fill the void, such as China, South Korea and Japan. China has played a particularly big role – the country provided half of overseas public finance to coal-fired power plants between 2013 and 2018.

China's massive foreign investments in coal have given it the reputation as a lender of last resort for many African and Asian countries eager to boost power capacity to fuel economic growth. But developing countries reliant on China could now find their energy policies turned on their heads. At the UN General Assembly in September, Chinese president Xi Jinping announced plans to abandon building new coal power plants abroad.

Malay unity movement in limbo as PAS team up with PN in Melaka election
Posted by: superadmin - 11-03-2021, 07:23 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

GEORGE TOWN – The concept of a Malay unity movement is in limbo following the move by PAS to team up with Perikatan Nasional (PN) instead of Umno in the upcoming Melaka state election.

It now remains to be seen how PAS and Umno, who are the primary forces behind the Malay unity movement, can reconcile.

Prof Sivamurugan Pandian of University Sains Malaysia said that PAS has clearly shown that it is more comfortable dealing with the PN coalition, rather than with Umno, whose top leadership is devoid of any cabinet positions for now.

“I think PAS is comfortable dealing with parties in government.

“It remains to be seen if PAS will remain entrenched with PN or continue to pursue its Muafakat Nasional partnership with Umno – the bedrock of Malay unity symbolism for contests other than Melaka,” he told The Vibes.

Economic liberalisation via trade may reduce national debt, says economist
Posted by: superadmin - 11-03-2021, 03:41 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: 01022021-worker_manufacturing-pixabay.jpg]

KUALA LUMPUR – The government ought to consider economic liberalisation through various initiatives, especially from the aspect of international trade, to give more injections of a long-lasting impact on the economy, an economist said.

Malaysian Rating Corporation Bhd (Marc) chief economist Firdaos Rosli said the government's initiatives were now more focused on private sector demand and not supply as private sector demand accounted for about 60% of the country's gross domestic product (GDP) at present.

“Supply is a bit difficult (to implement) as the impact is not immediate and if the government opens the economy now, the government will not see the impact immediately in that year, maybe the impact can be seen in the second or third years and so forth.

“But if the government focuses on private sector demand, the impact is immediate. For example, the government gives a Keluarga Malaysia assistance of RM2,000 to a person, he will take the money and spend it.

“But for supply, it is a little slow as a company or FDI (foreign direct investment) has to set up factories, employs workers, this will take time,” he said on Bernama TV’s “Ruang Bicara” programme entitled “Understanding Budget 2022” yesterday.

10 reasons why DBKL’s liquor restrictions smack of mockery – J.D. Lovrenciear
Posted by: superadmin - 11-03-2021, 03:20 PM - Forum: Stop Racism and Religious Bigotry - No Replies

[Image: 02112021_-_KUL_-_Liquor_sales_-_Sairien-16.jpg]

KUALA Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has imposed a wide sweeping alcohol sales ban and a string of restrictions and compliance laws that seems set to be emulated by other local governments all across the country, subsequently.

This move by DBKL has set tongues wagging while many harbour the perception that Malaysia may be going the way of the far and few Islamic nations that have declared their territories as “alcohol free” where alcohol importation, manufacturing, sales and consumption have burrowed deep and wide into the black market.

While consuming alcohol in excess is injurious to health and can harm families, the new string of restrictions and compliance rules introduced by DBKL to curb access to alcohol, wine and beer screams of mockery.

Let me explain why.

1. The ban on the sale of liquor at grocers, convenience stores, and Chinese medicinal shops may seem to curtail liquor consumption.

But beer is tolerated and can be sold. What is the correlating logic between a ban on liquor and the permitting of beer sales and ease of access?

  • Among the favorite EV brands in China are one from China, one from the United States and one from Germany.
  • This year’s survey covered about 1,600 Chinese consumers mostly living in China’s larger cities, with an average age of 32 and monthly income of about 19,000 yuan ($2,969).
  • Across cars of all categories, premium German brands ranked first, followed by Japanese brands and then Chinese brands including BYD and Geely, the report said.

BEIJING — When it comes to their favorite electric car brand, Chinese consumers’ top choice is Warren Buffett-backed BYD, according to a survey by Bernstein.

Elon Musk’s Tesla ranks second, and third on the list is Germany’s Volkswagen, Bernstein said. The firm cited the latest results from a regular survey of Chinese consumers in the third quarter of the last few years. This year’s survey, released Thursday, covered about 1,600 respondents.

Most of those surveyed lived in China’s larger cities, with an average age of 32 and monthly income of about 19,000 yuan ($2,969), the research firm.

Glenn Youngkin: Republican set to win Virginia governor race - US media
Posted by: superadmin - 11-03-2021, 02:58 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

Republican Glenn Youngkin is set to be elected as Virginia's next governor in a major upset, according to US media projections.

He is 2.7 points ahead of Democrat Terry McAuliffe, with more than 95% of votes counted.

Mr McAuliffe, who served as governor from 2014-18, saw his opinion poll lead vanish in recent weeks.

The ballot has been widely seen as a referendum on Joe Biden's presidency, and defeat will unnerve the Democrats.

Mr Biden won by 10 points in Virginia just a year ago.

In a speech to cheering fans, Mr Youngkin called his victory a "defining moment".

Is govt probing ex-IGP’s claims of corruption in politics, asks Mat Sabu
Posted by: superadmin - 11-03-2021, 02:29 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR: Amanah president Mohamad Sabu wants to know if there is any ongoing investigation into former inspector-general of police Abdul Hamid Bador’s claim of corruption in politics.

At his last press conference as the nation’s top cop in April, Hamid had urged the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to investigate politicians who had “party hopped”, saying corruption was “everywhere” in politics.

Mohamad (PH-Kota Raja) told the Dewan Rakyat it had been months since Hamid’s claim but there did not seem to be any probe into his allegations.

“Hamid was not just some police sergeant in Gua Musang or a corporal in Tawau. He was the IGP, revealing how corruption and irregularities were taking place in politics,” Mohamad, better known as Mat Sabu, said in his debate on the 2022 Supply Bill.

“I don’t see any serious investigations or that any information has been given to Parliament on whether the former IGP was talking nonsense.

In wake of cabotage reversal criticism, Wee reveals possible Japan cable project
Posted by: superadmin - 11-03-2021, 11:26 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: 28032021-KUL-UMNO_-_Datuk_Seri_Ir._Dr.%C...MRAN20.jpg]

KUALA LUMPUR –
Nippon Telegraph and Telephone (NTT) plans to launch a subsea cable system called the Intra-Asia Cable Express, which could involve Malaysia, said Transport Minister Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong, who is facing criticism over reversing the country’s cabotage exemption policy.

Wee said the NTT has approached the Malaysian government to bring in the cable project to pass through Sabah and Sarawak.

NTT is currently helming the “Apricot” subsea cable project to connect Singapore, Japan, Guam, the Philippines, Taiwan and Indonesia within a consortium that includes internet giants Google and Facebook.

Wee said this proposal should address claims that his ministry is hampering foreign investments and allowing the country to face losses.

The MCA president made the announcement over the country’s cabotage policy on foreign ships while wrapping up his debate with DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng, which was broadcast on TV3’s Bulletin Utama and Astro Awani this evening.
