No plans to regulate cryptocurrencies for now, says deputy minister
Posted by: superadmin - 12-13-2021, 02:54 PM - Forum: Business. Economy and Investment - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR: Putrajaya said today it will not regulate cryptocurrencies for now because of their decentralised nature.

Deputy minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Eddin Syazlee Shith said new laws to control cryptocurrency trade were also difficult because there was no decentralised body.

“The nature of cryptocurrency or Bitcoin is that it is difficult for us to control due to its decentralised nature,” he told Dewan Rakyat.

He was replying to Cha Kee Chin’s (PH-Rasah) question on the government’s stand on virtual currencies, and if they would be regulated to prevent losses.

BNM ‘overpaid’ for govt land, proceeds went to settling 1MDB debt, PAC finds
Posted by: superadmin - 12-13-2021, 02:49 PM - Forum: Business. Economy and Investment - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) “overpaid” for a piece of government land it did not plan to buy, the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) said today.

In its report on the purchase of the land known as Lot 41, the PAC said the proceeds from the RM2.07bil sale to BNM went towards repaying 1MDB debts.

It also said the insufficient due diligence raised questions as to whether BNM were pressured into buying the land.

BNM had purchased the plot of land in December 2017.

“BNM did not plan to purchase Lot 41 before an offer was made by the finance ministry.

“There was no plan to purchase the land in BNM’s annual strategic planning for 2015 to 2017 though BNM stated that the purpose of the purchase was to develop a financial services education hub for the long-term,” it said.

The PAC also said the RM2.07 billion price tag, based on an evaluation conducted by Suleiman & Co, was particularly high.

It pointed out that the Valuation and Property Services Department had evaluated the lot at around RM1.42 billion based on the existing ownership status.

DAP leadership, ops overhaul needed to shed Chinese image, gain Malay votes
Posted by: superadmin - 12-13-2021, 12:10 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR – DAP needs to undergo a major overhaul of its leadership and operations to shed its Chinese image, and woo the support of the Malay majority, said Ronnie Liu Tian Khiew.

The DAP central working committee member said the transformation is needed in order to ensure the party is a formidable choice for voters, especially the Malays, who make up the majority of the nation’s vote bank.

This was Liu’s response to questions on the party’s long-standing struggle to attract Malay votes and members, following the severe defeat that the party and its Pakatan Harapan (PH) allies faced in the recent Melaka polls.

“A change of top leadership in DAP is necessary as the current one is perceived as unfriendly to Malays in general,” the Sg Pelek assemblyman told The Vibes when contacted.

“The top leadership must have a good representation of all the major races.”

Guan Eng tells Dr Mahathir eating with chopsticks doesn’t make one less Malaysian

In sharp rebuke, Guan Eng tells Dr Mahathir eating with chopsticks doesn’t make one less Malaysian

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 13 — DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng described the reference about chopsticks made by Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad as simplistic and offensive to the Chinese community, whom the latter suggested have yet to “assimilate”.

The former prime minister had reportedly used the reference to describe the obstacle to efforts to assimilate the Chinese community, a view he has consistently expressed throughout his political career despite it having been repeatedly debunked.

Lim, a former senior member of Dr Mahathir's cabinet lineup, said the suggestion that the use of chopsticks — as opposed to using hands to feed — is a sign of Chinese identity was factually wrong, noting that the cutlery was also an integral part of other cultures.

Expect surprises in Iban seats, says analyst
Posted by: superadmin - 12-13-2021, 11:14 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

KUCHING: The ruling Gabungan Parti Sarawak could be in for some surprises in the coming state elections especially in Iban seats, says a political analyst.

Dick Lembang Dugun of Universiti Malaysia Sarawak said newcomers Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) will pose the biggest threat to GPS in these areas.

“There are several ‘hot seats’ like Ngemah where GPS, then the Sarawak Barisan Nasional, won by only 154 votes in 2016. GPS is fielding a newcomer, Anyi Jana. There is a chance it could lose this seat,” said Dugun.

“Another seat is Tamin, which Christopher Gira Sambang of GPS will be defending in a straight fight against Joseph Entulu Belaun, a well-known figure in the community being a former federal minister.”

Even Baleh, the seat held by the late Sarawak deputy chief minister James Masing, is not a safe seat. It will be contested by Masing’s nephew, Nicholas Kudi Jantai, but Dugun said there were murmurs on the ground that he did not enjoy the full support of the Parti Rakyat Sarawak grassroots.

Umno elections expected in November 2022
Posted by: superadmin - 12-12-2021, 06:33 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

SEREMBAN: The Umno party elections for the 2021/2023 term may be held in November next year, says deputy president Mohamad Hasan.

He said the elections had to be held before the expiry of the current leadership’s term, which is in December 2022.

The elections at the branch level, therefore, have to be held by July at the latest, he told reporters after opening the delegate meetings of the Rembau Umno Wanita, Youth and Puteri movements here today.

He was asked to comment on a proposal by several Umno divisions for the party elections to be held at least a year before the 15th general election (GE15).

To a question whether there was a proposal at the latest Umno Supreme Council meeting for the top five party posts not to be contested at the coming party elections, Mohamad said there was no such proposal.

Kit Siang slams ‘simpleton’ Puad, says he’s open to RCI on Zeti
Posted by: superadmin - 12-12-2021, 06:15 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Lim Kit Siang has hit back at an Umno Supreme Council member for labelling him a “hypocrite” over the DAP supremo’s supposed selective calls in pushing for a royal commission of inquiry (RCI).

In a strongly worded statement, the DAP supremo called Puad Zarkarshi a “national fraud” and a “simpleton” for making baseless allegations.

Earlier today, Puad called Lim the “most hypocritical politician” for being silent on calls for an RCI into other matters, including on former Bank Negara Malaysia governor Zeti Akhtar Aziz and former minister Nor Mohamed Yakcop’s role in the 1MDB scandal.

But Lim said he had no objection to any RCI into the role of Zeti and Nor Mohamed in the 1MDB scandal.

He also asked whether Puad would agree to an RCI being set up to look into the 1MDB scandal to uncover the attempted cover-up of the wrongdoing, which Lim claimed Puad was part of.

Why can ‘Uyghur Tribunal’ farce be staged in the West?
Posted by: superadmin - 12-12-2021, 05:03 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: 88f849bb-3415-4372-a2a1-c4c783dde9eb.jpeg]

The farce staged by the so-called "Uyghur Tribunal" reached its climax on Thursday with the Tribunal issuing a final ruling. It's well known that the Tribunal is not a judicial institution, nor does it have any authority to carry out judicial activities, international judicial investigations or related trials. In a legal sense, it has staged an absurd drama that's serving Western politics.

There are non-governmental pseudo-courts in the West. But those so-called courts are generally marginal. They cannot garner attention if filing accusations against small countries, and if they criticize the US, the capital-controlled media will neglect them. Those "courts" are too maverick, and therefore cannot receive response in the West.

But "Uyghur Tribunal" is an absolute exception. The game of it pretending to be a court has been played out as if the Tribunal is a real court. Everyone knows it's a fake one, but the British and other Western media outlets have interacted with it in an unprecedented enthusiastic manner. They are keen on following and reporting the Tribunal's whole process from "trial" to "ruling" and have almost treated it as a real court. No mainstream Western media outlet stood out and said to it: Don't get into the drama too deeply, it's just a pseudo-court.

Three British MPs sanctioned by China were present when the pseudo-court held a press conference to publicize its "ruling." They had an obvious motivation to vent anger at China. But even so, they should have followed the rules rather than deliberately confuse ideological activities with judicial ones. The British parliament as the country's legislative body should feel shameful about those MPs.

I don’t see Mahathir becoming PM for a third time, says Kit Siang
Posted by: superadmin - 12-12-2021, 01:17 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang says he is unaware of any DAP leader eager to return to power with Dr Mahathir Mohamad as the prime minister for the third time.

“I have become an octogenarian. Mahathir is older – he just celebrated his 96th birthday. I do not see him becoming prime minister a third time,” Lim said in a statement.

He was responding to a report that quoted Johor DAP leader Dr Boo Cheng Hau as saying there were voices in DAP calling for Anwar Ibrahim to step down as opposition leader as they were eager to return to power and were now cosying up to Mahathir, hoping to return to power one day.

“I don’t think Dr Boo is doing a service to DAP or to himself by concocting such baseless stories,” Lim said.
